Jeff Today’s column is the second in a series reflecting upon six defining characteristics of Catholic spirituality: grateful, communal, sacrificial, spousal, transformative, and sacramental. hen we contemplate the mystery of God, one of the first things that is revealed to us is that God exists as a relationship of Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. These divine relationships in God demonstrate to us that in order to be like God we ourselves must enter into relationships with one another. Even as we recall the origins of humanity, we see God’s relational/communal design for human beings: “God created mankind in his image; in the image and likeness of God he created them; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27). Not only is communal life our origin, but also it is our ultimate destiny, for it is our goal to be numbered one day among the Communion of Saints. any other Christian denominations place emphasis on the individual’s relationship with Jesus Christ as one’s personal Lord and Savior. While a personal relationship with God is essential, the Church has always taught that our salvation requires more than a personal profession of faith. Rather, we understand that salvation is both personal and communal. Christ died for my sins and for the sins of the whole world. Indeed, the communal aspect of our faith is so important that the Church does not hesitate to remind us in the Catechism that there can be no forgiveness of sins and no salvation apart from the Church herself. ow can this be, you might ask? Well, when the Son of God became a human being, He united Himself to all of humanity, and through the waters of Baptism, He gave us a way to unite ourselves to Him. Together, we form the Body of Christ: Jesus is the Head of this great Body, but He has made it so that we each are members of the Body. Saint Paul cleverly reminds us in his First Letter to the Corinthians that no member of a body can act on its own without being joined to the other members (cf. 12:12ff). And so it is with Christ. No individual member can act on his or her own without being joined to the rest of the Body of Christ. A personal confession of faith is meaningless unless it is the same faith that is professed by the whole Body. Notice how we profess our creed Sunday after Sunday by saying, “I believe in one God...,” but we do so as a community of believers with one voice. Therefore, when thinking about your relationship with God, do not discount your relationship with other people. It is often through them that God chooses to make His presence known to us, and, by loving others, we learn how to love God Himself (see 1 John 4:20; John 21:15-19). Sign up to receive the Vocations Crucifix in your home for a week as a visible reminder to pray for more men and women to answer God’s call to service in His Church! What is it? The Vocations Crucifix was established in February 1993, as a way to encourage families to pray together for more vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. How does it work? What do I do? Sign me up! You sign up to be on the roster of participating households. Each week a different family is assigned on the back page of the bulletin to receive the crucifix into their homes as a visible reminder of their commitment to pray for vocations. After Sunday Mass, you take home with you the Vocations Crucifix and accompanying prayer book from their pedestal by the sacristy door in church when assigned. Place the crucifix in a prominent place in your home and offer daily prayers as a family for vocations throughout the week. Return the crucifix and book to the church prior to the Vigil Mass on the following Saturday. Simply fill out the bottom portion of this sheet and drop it in the collection basket. A binder is located in the back of church containing the name of all Vocations Crucifix participants. Contact Sandy Loecker (402-254-3535) with any questions you may have.
