S tories of the call to discipleship continue as the time after Epiphany plays out the implications of our baptismal calling to show Christ to the world. Jesus begins proclaiming the good news and calling people to repentance right after John the Baptist is arrested for preaching in a similar way. Knowing that John was later executed, we see at the very outset the cost of discipleship. Still, the two sets of fisherman brothers leave everything they have known and worked for all their lives to follow Jesus and fish for people. This Week we Thank . . . Mary Jane Smith & Jackie Voight for volunteering in the office. FAITH FORMATION FOR ALL AGES! SHARE GOD’S WORD SHOW GOD’S LOVE SERVE GOD’S WORLD January is Radon Gas Awareness Month Radon gas is a colorless, odorless gas that is naturally formed from the breakdown of uranium in the soil, rocks, and water. It is very common in Wisconsin and seeps into houses through cracks in basement/ foundation walls and through sump pumps. Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and is especially dangerous as there are no symptoms from radon gas exposure. You should test for radon gas in the lowest level of your home that you spend any time in. Tests can be obtained from the State Lab of Hygiene in Madison by calling (608) 224-6227. You can pick up a test kit or they will mail one to you. Tests cost $25 and are billed when you receive the sample results. If unsafe radon levels are found in your home, there are steps you can take to make your home safer. Sealing cracks in basement/foundation floors and walls can help but a radon mitigation system that vents the radon gas through a pipe to your roof is the most effective solution. Please see the Wellness Committee Bulletin Board for more information or visit the webpage of the Environmental Protection Agency at www.epa.gov/radon.
