This year, fourteen New York State certified Hunter Education Instructors held four firearms courses
and one bow hunter course at Guan-Ho-Ha in March, April, August and September. One hundred fifty
six people received their certification cards after attending courses that took from ten to fourteen hours
of instruction time per course. This was done with the use of club facilities over a 16 day period and the
dedicated work of those volunteer instructors who gave freely of their time when the need arose.
Materials, such as inert firearms, ammunition, targets, hunter education manuals, hunting rules and
regulations booklets and certificates and other materials are supplied for the student’s use at no charge.
In fact there is no fee for the whole course. DEC also supplies instructors with Power Point equipment
if they need it. For the actual live fire sessions that we do, DEC supplies some firearms while instructors
supply some of their own.
At some of the courses Environmental Conservation Officers come in and explain what it is that they do
and answer any questions that students may have. They are always well received by the students.

Instructors responsible for seeing to it that courses were made available and ran smoothly were Darin
Cook (March, 13 students), Al Miller (April, 26 students), Jan Herdman (August, 20 students for bow
hunting and 33 students for firearms) and Butch Slater (September, 64 students). Other instructors that
assisted in these courses were Bill Bednarowski, Charles Beers, Pat Chaisson, Ted Helveston, Norm
Perazzo, John Van Etten, Joe Viva, Steve and Sue Mackey and Rob Mergen. Not all of these instructors are club members but they appreciate the group of instructors at the club and want to pass on safe
hunting skills in New York State. Even with this large group of instructors there is room for more to join
the group. We could really use a couple of bow hunters to pass on their knowledge and become new instructors. Interested in becoming an instructor, go to http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/9189.html or call
1-888-HUNT-ED2 or contact any of those named above.
For upcoming courses watch the club newsletter or go to DEC’s website http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7860.html and follow the links. Here at the club we try to do a spring course for turkey hunters, at
least one bow course and another two or more firearms courses.

This past summer GHH sponsored 7 campers to the Department of Environmental
Camps Colby and Pack Forest. Our camp attendees report fun and rewarding
experiences and many hope to have the opportunity to return next summer. Some of our
sponsored campers have even been invited back to train as counselors. Great to hear!
These summer camps encourage our youth to value the environment and help to develop
life skills and safe and active participation in a myriad of outdoor activities. For many
campers the experience leads to future education and career decisions.
Interested campers must submit a letter of application addressed to the Guan Ho Ha
committee chair, Dale Olsen. Letters may be sent to Dale Olsen via e-mail at
[email protected] or dropped off to the club. Please label your letter Attn: Dale

Ingredients
1 pheasant, about 3 pounds,
cut into 6 pieces (breasts, legs,
thighs)
2 cups all-purpose flour, seasoned
with salt and black pepper
2 Tbsp. olive oil
4 thick slices bacon, cut into 1/4
pieces
2 large carrots, peeled and
medium diced
2 cups white pearl
onions, peeled
1 pint cremini or white button
mushrooms, cut in half
4 cloves garlic, peeled
3 cups red wine
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 cups chicken broth
4 sprigs fresh thyme
2 bay leaves
2 Tbsp. unsalted butter
Process 1. Preheat the oven to 350’ F. 2. Lightly season the pheasant
pieces with salt and black pepper, then dredge each piece in the seasoned
flour, thoroughly coating each piece. Discard left over flour. 3. Add the
olive oil to a large heavy bottomed pot or braising pan over medium heat.
Add bacon pieces and cook until crispy. Remove bacon and reserve. 4.
Turn heat up to medium-high and brown the pheasant pieces in the pot
until golden brown, about 3 minutes per side. Remove from pot and
reserve. 5. Add the carrots, onions, mushrooms and garlic to the pot.
Brown slightly, about 2 minutes. 6. Add the red wine and cinnamon to
the pot and bring to a boil. Boil the wine for about 8 minutes. or until
reduced by half, then add the chicken broth. 7. Put the bacon back in
the pot with the thyme and bay leaves. Place the pheasant back in the
pot, skin side up, and bring back to a boil. Then place in the pre-heated
oven, uncovered, and cook for one and a half hours, or until pheasant
is tender but not falling off the bone. 8. Carefully remove the pheasant
and vegetables to a serving platter; discard the thyme and bay leaves.
Bring the remaining liquid to a boil and whisk in the butter until fully
incorporated. Spoon the finished sauce over the pheasant and serve

Shooting sports safer than ever
Mike Raykovicz Blog
December 21, 2014
Despite what many people think, hunting and firearms-related sports like trap, skeet and pistol
shooting are safe and getting safer. According to information released by the National Safety
Council, unintentional firearms fatalities are becoming fewer every year. A recent report published by
the NSC states, in the last two decades, the number of unintentional firearms-related fatalities has
declined by 57 percent. The report also notes that firearms are involved in fewer than one-half
percent of all unintentional fatalities in the United States. In a side-by-side comparison, firearms rank
among the lowest causes of injury. Firearms are involved in fewer than 1.8 percent of unintentional
fatalities among children 14 years of age and under and are among the least likely causes of an
unintentional fatality for children in that age group.
Firearms safety experts attribute this dramatic decline to mandatory firearms safety education
programs, along with educational efforts by groups such as the National Shooting Sports Foundation
and the National Rifle Association, in addition to state-affiliated hunter education programs.
Industry-related initiatives include educational programs such as the National Shooting Sports
Foundation's Project ChildSafe, the inclusion of free firearm-locking devices voluntarily supplied by
firearms manufacturers with all new firearms purchases, and technological advances in firearm
designs and manufacturing processes.
It’s a sobering fact that a person is 58 times more likely to be seriously injured in a motor vehicle
accident than they are with a firearm. Not only that, statistics show the rate of unintentional firearm
fatalities is substantially lower than the rate of motor vehicle fatalities. Around the home, poisoning,
falls, fire and smoke along with choking incidents cause 85 percent of all home deaths. Only 0.6 of 1
percent of home fatalities are caused by firearms.
So, the next time you hear someone say, “guns are dangerous,” be sure to inform them of the
findings in the report of the National Safety Council. It’s hard to refute the facts.
It should be noted however, while injuries involving firearms are on the decline, injuries related to
falls from treestands are not. Each year I hear about or read reports of someone being killed or
seriously injured while attempting to build or install a treestand. To my knowledge, neither the New
York Department of Environmental Conservation nor the Pennsylvania Game Commission keep a
record of the number of people hurt in such accidents, and I feel they should because the numbers
are significant. I still know hunters who climb trees and hunt from treestands without wearing a
safety harness attached to a safety line. The biggest danger to hunters during big game season is
not in getting shot, but suffering injury or death from a fall from a tree. Cold, wet, snowy conditions
can cause ice to build up on the treestand platforms and this greatly increases the possibility of a
fall. These falls are entirely preventable providing a hunter takes the proper precautions. I’ve heard
hunters say, “safety vests are expensive,” and I have to ask them “what’s a broken back worth?”

RANGE Monitoring
Effective Immediately
The range is being monitored by the new range officers
and they have a great concern about how the target area
is being destroyed. They have taken the time to patch
the back board to see how members shoot. If you can’t
hit your target and you’re hitting wood, you might want to
move forward until you zero your firearm in. Range rules
are posted. - Steve Tozer
NO .50 CAL Military Weapons Allowed on the ranges…
We are not set up for this large caliber!
** .50 Cal Blackpowder / Muzzleloader’s are OK! **
NO RAPID FIRE
on all of the ranges, ONLY slow deliberate shooting
This will be monitored!! — B.O.D.
