1. Day and night temperatures during the prevailing winter remain close to 30.0°C (86.0°F) and 16.0°C
(60.8°F). However, the levels usually fluctuate due to late winter. Hence adjust the protein and
energy level in the poultry diet as per the experts’ advice. Further test feed ingredients and ensure the
quality before use for feed preparation.
Post mortem observations in the birds brought for diagnostic purpose at Poultry Disease Diagnosis and Surveillance
Laboratory, VC & RI, Namakkal revealed death of birds due to E.coli, wing rot and respiratory tract infection. Test
feed ingredient for E.coli and Clostridium load and use good quality feed ingredient.

Agro Advisory
Under prevailing clear weather condition requires irrigation for all the irrigated crops
especially banana and maize.
Prevailing weather conditionis favourable for disease incidence (wilt) in coconut. Hence
farmers are requested to apply to Neem cake 5 to 10 kg / tree and irrigation has to be given.
Since clear weather is expected harvesting of paddy may be done and sun dried.
Water is released from Lower Bhavanidam; groundnut may be sown up to 31st of January.
Before sowing thaipattam groundnut seeds may be treated with bio fungicides like
trichoderma @ 4g /kg of seed or Pseudomonas @ 10g /kg of seed, to avoid seed and soil
borne diseases.
Because of low temperature and high relative humidity, infection from bacterial leaf blight is
expected in rice crop. To control spray Streptomycin sulphate + Tetracycline combination
300 g + Copper oxychloride 1250 g/ha. If necessary repeat 15 days later.
Second Breeding season in sheep is expected to be started in February therefore female
sheep’s may be given with good nutrition by giving more concentrates.

Advisories
Sunflower
Harvesting stage
As dry weather is expected in the coming days harvest the matured
sunflower. Yellowing of bracts and hardening of grains indicate maturity.
Harvest the earheads, spread as a thin layer and dry under sun for three
days. If the earheads are heaped before proper drying fungi will grow and
deteriorate the grain quality.
After drying thresh the earheads using
mechanical thresher, winnow the grains, again dry under sun for two days
and store in gunny bags.
Chilli
Fruiting stage
The expected weather during the coming days is conducive for the incidence
of muranai mite in chilli. For controlling this pest spray dicofol 2 ml/ l or
wettable sulphur 2 g/ l.
SMS: No rain. The expected weather is conducive for the incidence of muranai mite in chilli. For controlling
this spray dicofol 2 ml/ l or wettable sulphur 2 g/ l.
Thoothukudi & Tirunelveli
Rice
Maturity stage
As dry weather is expected in the coming days harvest the crop that attained
maturity. When 80% of the panicles turn straw colour in rice, the crop is
ready for harvest. Even at this stage, the leaves of some of the varieties may
remain green. When most of the grains at the base of the panicle of the
most matured tiller are in hard dough stage, the crop is ready for harvest. At
this stage harvest the crop, thresh and winnow the grains. Dry the grains to
12% moisture level for storage.
Sugarcane
Tillering stage
For sugarcane 275 and 112.5 kg/ ha of urea and muriate of potash,
respectively has to be divided into three splits and applied on 30, 60 and 90
days after planting. For the crop at tillering stage (60 DAS) apply one third of
the recommended quantity of nitrogen and potassium as per soil test
recommendation. If soil test is not done apply 92 kg nitrogen (202 kg urea)
and 37.5 kg potassium (60 kg MOP) per hectare and do earthing up.
Sunflower
Harvesting stage
As dry weather is expected in the coming days harvest the matured
sunflower. Yellowing of bracts and hardening of grains indicate maturity.
