Shumate The Association Past Presidents Shari Lee Thomas Weenonah Westgate “In the 21st century, I think the heroes will be the people who will improve the quality of life, fight poverty and introduce more sustainability.” – Bertrand Piccard, Swiss Psychiatrist The Annual Luncheon was a big success, thanks to the energy, enthusiasm and planning of the Special Events Committee that included Annette Remen, Dolores Fabulich, Andrea Moawad, Sue Richey, Alice Charron, Madeline Dion and Jean Horne. Loretta Clubb did an excellent job as Mistress of Ceremonies. We were pleased to announce the appointment of Rob Lenza as the Chief Operating Officer for Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital & Health Center. William (Bill) Robertson, the new Chief Executive Officer for MultiCare Health System, introduced himself and outlined his priorities for MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital & Health Center. These are exciting times and I am looking forward to seeing Bill’s vision become a reality. Sara Long, Vice President for the Foundations of MultiCare, gave a wonderful presentation on change as a major component of sustainability. She started a conversation with us about the current gift shops and explained the mutual decision between the Mary Bridge Brigade Board of Trustees and MultiCare Health System (MHS) to transition all the gift shops to MHS in order to create a climate of sustainability. Mary Bridge Brigade will begin to receive the profits from the two remaining gift shops on the campus, to include the Atrium Gift Shop located in Tacoma General Hospital and the Mary Bridge Gift Shop located on the first floor of Mary Bridge Children’s Health Center. It is anticipated the agreement will be a win-win for both organizations. The ongoing conversation with MHS is all about sustainability for Mary Bridge Brigade in order to continue our mission for the next 93 years and beyond. If any of you have seen the recent television and newspaper advertisements for Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital & Health Center, it is truly inspiring that the ads start with 1921 and women driving children to places where they could get adequate healthcare and advances forward to the time when those same women were responsible for building a children’s hospital in Tacoma. It is heartwarming to me that MultiCare values our contributions so highly. Indeed, they want nothing more than that we be successful as champions for pediatric healthcare in our region. Children need us to insure they have every opportunity to grow up even if they have serious health conditions. We provide the lifeline for all children in our region regardless of their financial circumstances. We neutralize the effect of poverty on healthcare and we do our best to support programs that improve the quality of life for children receiving healthcare at Mary Bridge. It is imperative that we sustain ourselves now and in the future for the sake of children who need us to be there for them. In order to be sustainable there are several benchmarks we need to meet. The first is to stabilize our membership. The second is to increase our investments and our fundraising activities; and the third is to develop consistent leadership at the Guild and Association level. Our founders understood these priorities and throughout our history there are women who have dedicated their lives to Tacoma Orthopedic Association/ Mary Bridge Brigade. At our Annual Meeting luncheon, Jean Cunningham, our first Lifetime Achievement Award winner, presented the award to our second winner, Dolores Fabulich. We are truly blest to have such examples of dedication in our organization. Summer will usher in a new organizational year for us. It will be full of opportunities and challenges, together we are strong enough to find the solutions necessary to sustain ourselves now and for years to come. Thank you for your continued support. Summer 2014 Bulletin – Page 7 Guild Events Has your Guild Taken a Tour of the New PiCU and NiCU yet? Summer would be an excellent time for your Guild to combine a meeting with a tour of MultiCare’s new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and perhaps to follow up with a picnic in Wright or Point Defiance Park, or a trip down to the waterfront for lunch at one of our local restaurants. Sometimes it is easier for a hostess to call and arrange for a tour and then schedule reservations at your favorite restaurant for lunch than it is to do all the prep for a meeting in your home or on your patio. To schedule a tour of the hospital, simply call Pat Sagers, member of the Holiday Guild, at 253.564.3002, or Jennifer Schlatter, staff member with Mary Bridge Foundation, at 253.403.1369. Tours can be arranged on the day and at the time most convenient with your Guild members. Pictured above are members of the Lakewood Guild on their tour of the new PICU and NICU this spring. From left to right are Nancy Hill, Alice Anderson, Maggie Schauble, Maren Dunlap, Deena Saffell, Rita Boyd, Sharon Betzendorfer, Sue Richey and Patty Ewing. 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award Presented by Jean Cunning ham, 2013 Winner Dear Association Members, You have made me feel so special by honoring me with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Mary Bridge Brigade luncheon. As with all of us, Mary Bridge Brigade is dear to my heart and it is a privilege, joy, fun, and, yes, hard work sometimes to keep the time commitment, but the lifelong friends I have made and the goal of helping Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital has been well worth it. Thank you for all your kind words and cards. This is an honor I will always treasure because it came from all of you. – Dolores Fabulich Dolores Fabulich receiving the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award Thank You Note received from Diane Cecchettini, retiring President & Chief Executive Officer of MultiCare Health System, after having been presented with a gift from Mary Bridge Brigade at the Annual Luncheon. “Thank you for the lovely words, recognition, and the owl garden stone. “I appreciate each of you and the contributions you make together to support our children in our community. Thank you!” – Diane Cecchettini With this year’s whimsical theme now established, preparations have begun for the 2014 Mary Bridge Festival of Trees. The Mary Bridge Brigade is the presenting sponsor of this spectacular annual event and many of our members volunteer time to contribute to Festival’s success. This year’s “Queen of ’14,” Cathy Early, is pulling together the Festival of Trees Administrative Council (FOTAC) – the event’s volunteer organizing body. There are positions large and small that support Festival as a whole; or support individual events such as Ladies Night Out, Gala, Jinglebell Jam, Public Days and more! If you are interested in learning more about Festival volunteer opportunities, or if you have an interest in sponsoring and/or designing a tree this year, please contact: Marcy Anstett, Mary Bridge Brigade Festival Liaison, 253.759.8837, [email protected] Cathy Early, Festival of Trees Event Chair, 253.439.9400, [email protected] Lois Beard, Festival of Trees Event Manager, 253.403.1368, [email protected] MARY BRIDGE BRIGADE PO BOx 5299 MS: 311-1-MBB TAcOMA, WA 98415-0299 nOn-PrOfiT Org. u.S. POSTAge PAid TAcOMA, WA PerMiT #9 reTurn Service requeSTed Correction from the Mary Bridge Brigade Office At the Annual Meeting/Luncheon on May 15, 2014, we were pleased to distribute the Mary Bridge Brigade Annual Report for 2013. Information from many sources, Trustees, Guilds, Mary Bridge Gift Shop, Holiday Wreath Project and Festival of Trees (FOT), is compiled to create the Guild Credit Table on pages 22-23. This table includes in-kind donation amounts, volunteer hours, and Guild’s actual dollars. One of the columns, titled Festival of Trees dollars, shows the amounts for which our Guild sponsored trees, wreaths, tablescapes, etc. sold. Unfortunately, an error was made this year when totaling these FOT amounts. The Peninsula Guild #1 was not credited for their tree and tablescape. Members, DeeDee Sullivan and Bev Reinvik, designed both Tree #11: Ice, Ice Baby and Tablescape #10: Oh! Baby…It’s Cold Inside!, that sold for a total of $5,521. This correction to the Guild Credit Table brings the Peninsula Guild #1 Total Dollar Credit to $5,609 and their GRAND TOTAL dollars to $56,059. Now, the Mary Bridge Brigade 2013 GRAND TOTAL from Guild Contributions is $343,984. Thank you all for your hard work in reaching this total! Kathryn Stutz, Office Secretary Mary Bridge Brigade
