Okotoks coach guts its out on the mat
Wrestling: Spencer Watkins wins gold after three-year hiatus
By Bruce Campbell
the University of Fraser
Valley 10-6 in the gold
medal match.
“Going into the final
match, I told dad (fellow
Okotoks Wrestling Club
coach Doug Watkins) I
don’t think I will be able
to wrestle this guy, I was
so tired,” Watkins said. “He
told me that’s good because
I am more relaxed when I
am tired.
“My strategy was to go
in there very efficient, try
not to get too tired and get
the W.”
Watkins found himself
behind after the first of
two three-minute rounds,
but was able to battle back
to get the decision from
Phulka. He was also behind
University of Regina
Cougar Jacob Luczak in
the semifinal before coming back to win 13-10. He
quickly downed University
of Saskatchewan wrestler
Samson Swan 10-0 in his
opening match.

Spencer Watkins, here pinning an opponent en route winning the 2009 high school provincial title, was back on the
mat at the U of A Open earlier this month.
Wrestling is like riding a
bicycle — you never forget.
However, take a break and
you might forget how tiring it is.
Okotoks Wrestling Club
coach Spencer Watkins won
the gold medal at 100kg
division of the University
of Alberta Green and Gold
Open on Jan. 10 — it was
the first time in three years
the former national medalist had competed on the
mat.
“I have 12 years of wrestling under my belt, so once
you get started your muscle
memory kind of kicks in,”
Watkins said. “But fitness
is something you have to
maintain. I only had about
a 15 to 20-minute break
between matches. I thought
it was going to kill me…I
felt I was fighting for my
life when I was on the mat.”
Watkins was able to fight
off the fatigue and outlasted Chanmit Phulka from

Hockey: HTA’s Marianne Thodas an all-star in AJFHL
By Remy Greer
Staff Reporter
A long-term hockey
vision became a reality for
an Okotokian on Saturday.
S eventeen-year-old
Marianne Thodas made
her debut on the all-star
stage, registering an assist
to help Team South win the
Alberta Junior A Female
Hockey League (AJFHL)
All-Star Game on Jan. 17 in
Lethbridge.
“Ever since I was a kid
I’ve wanted to play in the
all-star game. It was a dream
come true, especially playing as an underage,” said
Thodas, a Grade 12 student
at Holy Trinity Academy.
“I met so many new girls
from different teams. It’s
pretty cool, we got together
to win. It’s the first time the
South has beaten the North.
To be a part of that was just
insane.
“When it’s the best players in a league that’s already
so competitive, it’s an experience like no other. You
work your butt off, but it’s
worth it.”
One of six Calgary Titans
to make the all-star classic, Thodas assisted on the
opening tally for the South
who would go on to win by
a 3-2 count to earn the right
to home-ice advantage in
the league finals.
Playing in a league typi-
cally reserved for 18-22
year-old minor hockey
graduates, Thodas jumped
the queue last season as an
affiliate with the Titans and
hasn’t looked back since.
She’s second on the
Titans with three goals and
13 points in 19 games in
2014-15.
A far cry from just a few
season ago in the Foothills.
“In Okotoks, I was told
for a long time that I wasn’t
a good enough player and
every summer I would
train my butt off to try an
make it, but it never really
worked out,” said Thodas,
who played 10 seasons of
minor hockey in Okotoks.
“I headed out to Strathmore
to play and from there
the Junior Titans actually
picked me up.
“I made the team again
this year and got to play as
an underage.”
Of course, skating against
opposition several years her
senior comes with its challenges.
“I’m quite a bit younger
and smaller than a lot of
girls in this league,” she
said. “You learn so much
and it’s not even just about
learning and how competitive it is. I’m treated like
everybody’s younger sister
out there, they all look out
for me.”
