Jean Kenney
of Okotoks, AB
passed away peacefully at the Foothills
Country Hospice at
the age of 91.
Jean was predeceased by her
husband Mark, sons Garry and John. She is
survived by Raymond (Charlotte), Glen, Shirley (Grant), Larry (Carol). Junie (Len) and Betty, close friends Marg and Ole. She also leaves
10 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Jean was born in Calgary and lived in
DeWinton and Okotoks area most of
her life. She loved country life, outdoors,
animals and took special delight
in visiting Kananaskis area.
Her family would like to express
their thanks to Tudor Manor, Foothills
Country Hospice and
a special thank you
to Dr. Van Tonder.
Brian Leslie Christal
October 3, 1953 - November 3, 2014
Brian passed away
peacefully following a
courageous battle
against lung disease.
Brian had a great
passion for his Harley
Davidson and a love
of the great outdoors,
his dogs, golfing and
camping. He had a
strong work ethic and
was a member of the Plumber and Pipe fitters Local Union 496
for 37 years and spent much of his career at Nardei Fabricators
in Calgary.
Brian will be dearly missed by his wife Kelly Christal, son
Nathan (Julia) Christal, stepdaughter Chantel Bickerton, mother
Jeanette Potter of Calgary, Father Ray Christal of Meadow
Lake, Saskatchewan, brothers Doug and Tim (Evelyn) Christal,
sisters Linda Christal and Karen (Jim) Perman, sisters-in-law
Kathy (Rick) Warmen and Andrea (Doug) Scott and many nieces
and nephews. Brian was predeceased by his step son David
Bickerton.
A celebration of Brian’s life will be held at the Kensington
Royal Canadian Legion Branch #264, 1910 Kensington Road NW.
Calgary, AB on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 1:00 p.m.
The family wishes to thank the outstanding group of healthcare workers who supported Brian and provided constant care
and understanding during a difficult time. A special thank you to
Dr. Doran at the Oilfields General Hospital and to Dr. Fell at the
South Health Campus Hospital.

It is with great sadness the family of Fred
Adam Barkley announces his passing on
October 31, 2014 at Father Lacombe Care Centre Calgary at the age of 88 years.
Fred is survived by his loving wife Edith; four
children, Darlene Barkley, Daryl (Marian) Barkley, Cheryl (Ian) Traquair and Wayne Barkley;
fourteen grandchildren and seventeen greatgrandchildren. Fred was predeceased by his
parents Raymond and Lawna Barkley and sister
Grace Latter.
Fred was born October 15, 1926 at Calgary,
Alberta. Celebration of Fred’s life took place on
Sunday November 9, 2014 at the Glenmore Inn,
Calgary.

Late rally helps Cayley cowboy
Bareback: Matt Lait wins average in bareback at Canadian Finals Rodeo

Better Lait than never.
Cayley cowboy Matt Lait
went into the Canadian
Finals Rodeo Nov. 5 in
Edmonton sitting sixth
place in the bareback, and
wound up winning the
most money at the annual
championship.
However, he had to settle for second-place in the
final Canadian standings
as Jake Vold finished the
season with $63,621. Lait
was second at year end with
$46,758.
“One of my goals going
into the CFR was to win
more money than anyone
else,” said Lait, the defending Canadian champion. “I
knew it was going to be
tough to beat Jake, because
he had the big lead.
“To make more money
than anyone else last week,
it obviously means I had a
very good week.”
He had some added
incentive.
Had he finished the
season in sixth place, Lait
would have likely been
watching the 2015 Calgary
Stampede from the stands,
rather than nodding his
head in the chutes.
“Obviously, that’s a big
deal,” Lait said.
He got off to a bad start,
biting the infield dust on
opening night, Nov. 5.
Lait found some Karma
on the next night.
“I had Unfortunate
Karma and he was in what
we call our eliminator pen,”
Lait said of his winning ride
on Thursday. “We call it
that because it is the hardest
horses in Canada.
“I take a lot of pride in
doing good in that pen. It
seems sometimes I ride the
harder ones better than the
easier ones.”
He had a winning score of
87 on Unfortunate Karma,

good for the $11,809 firstplace cheque.
Lait finished third on
Saturday night, but despite
picking up about $5,000, he
lost ground to Vold. The
Airdrie cowboy won the goround.
“After that we all knew
that Jake had it won because
he had too big of a lead,”
Lait said.
However, Lait ended the
Canadian season with a
$24,000 bang.
He won the final goround with a ride of 87.5 on
Sunday.
“I made about $24,000
yesterday,” Lait said on
Monday. “I knew that if
I won the round, I would
also win the average (at the
CFR).”
That was good for another $11,800.
