Librafax - East Islip Public Library

Your Library is a "Family Place"
Last month, the Library was presented with a "Family Place Libraries" banner that now
hangs at the front entrance to our building. We know what you are thinking, the library has
always been a "family" place. Yes, it is true that hundreds of families have come in every week
to use our resources, attend our programs, and check out our materials, but, "Family Place Libraries"
is a national initiative and a great achievement for our library.
"Family Place Libraries" is a countrywide network of public libraries that believe literacy
begins at birth, and that libraries can help build strong communities by nourishing healthy families. Through this initiative, our Children's staff has received specialized training and grants to
make their spaces more family friendly.
So, please join us. Bring your children or your grandchildren to play in our Children's
Room or to attend a program. You'll find that the library is a place where playing, singing and
reading leads to families coming together, developing friendships, and building connections with
one another, the library and the larger community.
The EIPL makerspace was made available through the generous funding from a New York State Grant supplied by
Senator Phil Boyle.
What is a Makerspace? A Makerspace is a Do-It-Yourself space where people can create, invent and learn. Ours includes an
All-in-One touchscreen computer with Windows 8, lots of creative software (see below), a 3D printer, and a large format printer
for printing your posters and photos.
What is in Our Makerspace?
What you need to know to use our space
A 3D printer: Makerbot Replicator 2
Large format printer for printing out posters that you have
created, as well as photographs from a USB flash drive or
SD card.
All-in-one large touch screen PC with Windows 8.1 operating
system.
A pair of headphones to use if you are using any program
with sound.
Software:
Sony Movie Studio 13 Suite, Sony ACID Music Studio 10,
Corel PaintShop Pro X7, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Adobe
Premiere Elements, Makerbot Desktop App, Microsoft
Office 2013, Blender 3D Creation, Sketchup 3D modeling
The library provides access to 3-D printing software and
hard ware capabilities; patrons should be familiar with the
Technology in order to use the equipment for such purposes
Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult over 18
when using the equipment.
Creators using the equipment must stay in the building for
the duration of the time their design is printing. All projects
must be completed 30 minutes before the library closes. A
detailed policy on use of the equipment will be posted on the
bulletin board above the workspace.
There is a charge for all printing. A cost-chart will be posted
on the bulletin board.
The cost of 3D printing is based on the length of time your
design takes to print or for each photo or poster you print.
We will also be offering INTRODUCTION TO PUBLISHER & INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOSHOP CLASSES

If you’re in the market for artwork, whether it be for decoration
or investment purposes, consider stopping by the Gallery at the East
Islip Public Library. The Gallery is open during regular library hours.
If you have any questions regarding the sale of art work in the
Gallery, please call Judy Moccio at 581-9200 ext.8.
The featured artist for the month of January is Angel Paniagua.
Mr. Paniagua is a self-taught artist who has worked as a master
engraver for 40 years. In his professional life he has engraved major
awards including the Oscar, the Tony, the Emmy and the Clio. Mr.
Paniagua started painting in 1998, working with both watercolors
and oils, and his credits include the creation of the posters for the
47th and 48th National Hispanic Day Parade on Long Island. His
work has been shown previously at the Sagtikos Manor and the Fire
Island Preservation Society. Mr. Paniagua will be hosting an art
reception on Sunday January 18, from 2 - 4 p.m., with refreshments;
all are welcome to attend.
In February, the photography of Chris Zec will be displayed

and seascapes at dawn and dusk, when the scarce light turns the sky
into a multi-hued canvas. Mr. Zec holds a BS in Geology from Stony
Brook University and his respect and love of nature is apparent in
his work, which is currently displayed in many businesses and facilities across Long Island, including the EAB Plaza. Come see these

TECH TALK
Newspapers Available Online Through Your Library
If you’re searching for a newspaper article, whether it be something you saw in the paper last week or information about an event
that happened long ago, you should know the library provides the
easiest way to search for it. Rather than digging through your
recycling bin or thumbing through our newspaper archives, you can
search our newspaper databases from wherever you are. Through the
Live-brary.com link on our home page you can access current and
past Newsday and New York Times articles using just your internet
connection and your library card. Searching is as easy as entering a
keyword, though more advanced search features are available. For
those whose research dates back further, Live-brary.com also has
historical databases of both newspapers that contain the full page
layouts, including photographs and advertisements. The New York
Times Historical database contains the full run of the Times back to
1851, while the Newsday Historical database dates back to their
inception in 1940. If you need help using these databases contact us
at the Reference desk.

Thurs, February 19 (7-9 p.m.)
Ages: 10+
Fee: $50 per person
Why wait until the last minute to get your boating license?
Recent New York State law requires that anyone born on or after
May 1, 1996 must obtain a boating license; this supersedes last
year’s Suffolk County law that requires all boaters to obtain a
license. Additionally, all persons operating personal watercraft
(Jet Skis) must have a boating certificate and be at least 14-years
-old. So come in from the cold and take this class to get it out of
the way; the license earned in this class is good for both boats
and Jet Skis and will last for a lifetime. You must attend all three
classes to obtain a certificate. Register with your library card at
the Reference Desk. Please bring exact amount, cash only.

program a success!
IMPORTANT REMINDER
For all parents and caretakers of toddlers and young children
No child under 9 years of age may be left unattended at any time, anywhere in the library. For the safety and protection of your
children please remain with them. Even in the friendly atmosphere of the Children’s Room, youngsters are at risk of harmful accidents or
incidents that could otherwise be prevented with parental supervision. Librarians and support staff cannot be responsible for overseeing
individuals, and we do want your child’s visit to the library to be a happy and rewarding experience.
PROGRAM REGISTRATION
The Children’s Department offers registration online or you can come into the library to register if you prefer. Please remember
that each child you are registering must have their own East Islip library card and you must bring the card with you. If you ask another
family member to register your child, please give them the library card.
To register online, have your child’s East Islip library card handy and go to the Current Programs section of the Kids’ Corner on
the library home page at www.eipl.org. Instructions for online registration can be found at http://eipl.suffolk.lib.ny.us/kidscorner/
programs/howtoonline.html.
PROGRAMS
Programs are one hour in length unless otherwise noted. Please arrive on time for programs. We will hold your place for 5
minutes. After that we will seat standbys and there may no longer be room for your child to attend. If you cannot attend a program you
are registered for, please notify us so that someone on the waiting list may attend. Thank you for your consideration.
If a program states “no siblings”, please do not bring unregistered children to the class. For the full enjoyment of all participants at
the class, only registered children will be permitted to attend with their adult. Please make other arrangements for younger or older siblings.
This library is inclusion friendly. If your child needs any special accommodations in order to participate, please let us know.
FOOD ALLERGIES? We sometimes serve snacks at a program, so please notify us if your child has any food allergies.
SAY CHEESE! Your attendance at programs sponsored by the East Islip Public Library may be digitally recorded through photographs or
video recordings. These images may be posted in the library, on our website, in our newsletter or by local newspapers. If you do not wish
your image to be published, please notify a member of the Children’s Department before the program.
