This year’s holiday party is going to be held at the Sunsphere in downtown Knoxville on Saturday November 22, 2008. We plan to make this year count, so invite your friends and family to come along as well.
There will be no door sales for this event so if you plan to come you must purchase your ticket(s) in advance.
Holiday Party update: We have been doing very well selling tickets for this year’s event, but still have tickets available for you and your friends/family, so don’t miss out! The more tickets we sell, the more fun we can have!! Don’t
delay, send in your money for tickets right away, or buy them at the next happy hour! The event will be a heavy hors
d’oeuvres, cocktail style party, with a cash bar (Beer $3, wine $5 and cocktails $5), and definitely dancing. Mingling
is the name of the game this year, so let’s have fun!
There is a new bar that opened on the 5th floor of the Sunsphere called the “Sky Box”. It is open to the public for
drinks and appetizers so feel free to meet your KSOC friends up there prior to the party if you wish.

Greenbrier Pinnacle

Join us on a hike in the Smoky Mountains. We will park at the Ramsey Cascade trail
head and hike 1.5 miles to the Greenbrier Pinnacle trail head gaining about 500 feet.
The Greenbrier Pinnacle trail is 3.5 miles long and it gains about 2000 feet. At the top
we will find an old fire tower site and a very fine view. The total hiking distance is about
10 miles. The hike difficulty is rated as moderate.
We will meet in the Bearden Central Baptist Church parking lot for car-pooling and
leave at 8:30 am stopping at the Cracker Barrel at Strawberry Plains
Pike about 9:00 am for those who would prefer to meet there. We
recommend shoes to wear to and from the hike plus sturdy hiking
shoes, other weather appropriate clothing, a snack, a drink and a
camera. After the hike plan on stopping on the way back for a meal
and refreshments. For specific information about the hike please call

Telemark & Backcountry Skiing

Telemark and Backcountry Skiing Gear and Video Night, Wednesday, November 19, 7-9pm at Barleys (upstairs in the back
room).
Join us for pizza, beverages, gear, and awesome video footage as we show off the art and sport that is Telemark skiing. We
will have a variety of Telemark and alpine touring ski gear, as well as tools for getting around in the backcountry and staying
safe in avalanche terrain. We'll have some of the hottest extreme Telemark skiing videos as well as some fun instructional videos, some come check out the free heel craze.
What is Telemark? Telemarking is the "original skiing style", developed by Norwegian Sondre Norheim in the late 1800's. Originally it was used as an alternative to snowshoeing, allowing skiers to glide across the snow as done in cross-country skiing. As
ski gear has developed, the Telemark turn has evolved into a thing of beauty and power. Unlike alpine skiing, Telemark skiers
have a "free heel" which allows them greater flexibility and range of motion during the turn. Recent innovations in Telemark
specific ski gear, tall plastic boots, strong bindings, and wide skis, have allowed Telemarkers to equal their alpine brethren.

The weather’s finally getting colder and the resorts out West are seeing their first snows of the season. Don’t know
about you, but that’s all it takes to get me in the mood. Just a few weeks now ‘til the first North Carolina resort opens
for the season, so let’s get ready to ski!
One of the benefits of your Knoxville Ski & Outing Club belonging to the Crescent Ski Council is the opportunity for
us to join up with hundreds of skiers from across the Southeast at any of the six race weekends they host throughout
the year. Whether you have Olympic aspirations, like to tear up the terrain park on your board, or just want to beat
your favorite buddy down the hill, Crescent has a race for you.
Crescent’s race program has always been open to skiers, boarders and telemarker’s alike, but has now expanded
their program to include a Terrain Park Competition. All of the races are flighted so that you only race against people
of similar ability to you. So whether you can make it out to all 6 wkds, or just want to come to a couple to get warmed
up for a trip out West, your KSOC Race Team has a spot for you!
Come find out what it’s all about at our annual Race Team Sign-up Night, hosted by our friends at Rolf Lanz Ski &

In Jackson Hole, the Old West still lives in one of the most charming towns you’re likely to find anywhere. From the
“local color” of the Town Square’s elk antler arches and the nightly Jackson Hole Shootout, to the unique shops and
restaurants along the boardwalks, Jackson truly has something for everyone. The wonders of Yellowstone, just a
short drive up the road, are sure to open the eyes of even the most experienced traveler. Someone said that Jackson
is somewhere between a five star ski resort and Custer’s last stand!
We’ll be staying at the 49’er Inn, which is located in downtown Jackson Hole. We stayed there in 2006 and every one
enjoyed it. The Suites are quite large and all come with microwave, coffee maker and small refrigerator. There is also
a “fireplace suite” option with an even larger room, upgraded interior and a gas fireplace.
(www.townsquareinns.com/49er-inn) Included in the package is an expanded Continental breakfast in the hotel restaurant, (waffles, boiled eggs, hot and cold cereal etc.) I personally like this setup because I get to see almost everyone early, and we can plan that days and nights activity. We will have an awards dinner some time during the week,
the owner of the Inn, an avid hunter, will be our host, he and the staff prepare an Elk BBQ for our group. The Inn is
located about 20 minutes from the slopes. Busses pick us up at the Inn’s front door and whisk us up the mountain.
Storage is available on the mountain for those who don’t want to carry their skis and boots back and forth.
Our airline connections are with United thru Denver, leaving Knoxville 3:46pm arriving Jackson Hole 7:32pm on Sunday, we arrive back in Knoxville 3:12 Sunday week, keep in mind this is a Sunday to Sunday trip. Discount lift tickets
will be available, also we are planning to ski Grand Targhee, one, or possibly two days, weather permitting. The price
for all this fun is only $1170.00 per person double occupancy; add $40 per person for the fireplace option. I think this

BEAVER CREEK, COLORADO

This trip is being billed as our luxury trip of the winter, so for those who have requested a more posh ski trip with skiin, ski-out convenience, this is the one for you. Where else do you get handed free freshly baked chocolate chip
cookies at the end of the day as you leave the slopes!!
Beaver Creek was built with the influences of renowned resorts in Europe such as St. Moritz, Cortina, and Spain’s Val
d’Aran. This led to the creation of a unique mountain resort full of excitement and village luxury. The towns of Avon
and Edwards are located minutes from Beaver Creek and offer a variety of entertainment, shopping and restaurants.
There is a free shuttle to these towns from Beaver Creek Village.
The package price for this trip is $1,420.00. Our luxury accommodations are the Highlands Lodge right next to the
Highlands lift, which provides us “Ski-in, Ski-out” comfort and we’re only a short walk to the Village restaurants and
shops. We will be staying in 3-bedroom, 3-bath townhomes, with private balconies, wood burning fireplaces, full service concierge, bell service, hot tubs, ski storage, washers & dryers, and the privilege of using the Allegria Spa health
club. Included in the package, of course, is airfare on Delta, flying into Eagle Airport, arriving 10:15 a.m. with only
one change. Then it will be just a short bus ride to our condos. Also included is baggage handling at the lodge.
Some of the mountain stats are 1,805 total skiable acres, 4,000 ft. vertical, 11,400 ft. elevation, 148 trails, 17 lifts (2
gondolas, 10 high speed quads, 2 triple chairs, 3 double chairs), 3 terrain parks, and their longest run is 2-3/4 miles.
Also there are 2 bowls. Grooming is their passion here, where it is done 20 hrs. per day, 7 days a week. The result
is 775 groomed acres for your skiing pleasure. One unique fact about Beaver Creek is that it is 100% powered by the
wind, and they recycle over a million pounds of material every year. Even the trail maps are printed on recycled paper!
It is known that Colorado ski areas usually get the most snow in March. Remember last season when our Vail trip had

OKTOBERFEST TRIP
MEMORIES
Gute Morgen! Early morning, Sept. 27th, after a couple of last minute cancellations,
twenty eight fun loving members left Knoxville on a new adventure trip to Helen, Georgia, to experience a beer drinking festival
similar to the real thing in Munich. The party
got started early on the bus with juice, doughnuts and lots of Bloody Marys! By the time
we arrived in Helen about 4-1/2 hrs. later everyone was in the party spirit! The town definitely had a Bavarian atmosphere with
the type of architecture. Departing the bus, various groups scattered in the town looking for the nearest “beer stube” or lunch
restaurant. Everywhere, pitchers of beer were flowing. Don’t know who won the most beer-drinking contest in our group, but
two guys I know well, did a pretty good job of it that day!! One guy I know very well, was the hit of the town with his tall beer
mug hat and Oktoberfest shirt from Munich. Everyone wanted to buy a hat like that! After a lunch of wurst, sauerkraut, potato
salad, or red cabbage, most people went on a shopping tour of the many touristy souvenir shops. Some also checked out the
many outdoor beer gardens. A large group found a sports bar where they watched UT lose to Auburn and, of course, drank
more beer! The main “Oktoberfestivities” were held at the large Festhalle where most people ended up for more German food,
polka dancing and beer drinking that evening. One particular guy, namely Jerry, who had to be talked into going there, ended
up being a real party animal dancing just about every dance, not leaving out any gal at the big table! Prost Jerry! There was a
good polka band and the comedy female duo of “Lorelei & Schatzi” to entertain us. About 9 p.m., everyone wandered back to
the bus to drive to our hotel for the night.
On Sunday, after a late buffet breakfast at the hotel, we boarded our bus and drove about an hour to our first beautiful winery.
The Wolf Mountain Winery, in the hills of northern Georgia, with a great mountain view. We were blessed with a warm sunny
day. It was a first class winery where wedding receptions and fancy Sunday brunches are held. The tasting was excellent and
several bought their favorite kind. After a two-hour visit, we were off to our next winery a short distance away. This was the Frogtown Winery, another beautiful estate
with a mountain view from their large deck on which a group photo was taken. Here
we sat at large round linen clothed tables for our private tasting of 10 various wines.
Both of these wineries were quite impressive and produced some great red and white
wines. A third winery was on the schedule, but after four hours of touring, and tasting
many wines already, the group consensus was to head back to K-town. It was a fun
trip and everyone seemed to enjoy it all. An added bonus was our super friendly
Mayes bus driver, another Jim Smith, who knew a lot about this part of northern
Georgia.
Sugar Mountain Resort Hosts
The Sixth Annual Sugarfest

SugarFest kick starts the winter season with a weekend of pure winter fun! Sponsored by the Village of Sugar Mountain Tourism
Development Authority (TDA) and hosted by Sugar Mountain Resort, SugarFest will be held December 13th and 14th, 2008.
The two-day festival is packed with a long list of winter activities and coincides with Sugar’s 18th Annual Adult Preseason Ski Clinic
where 1994 Olympic Gold & 1992 Olympic Silver medalist Diann Roffe and two-time (1992 & 1994) Olympian, Krista Schmidinger will both be
special guest coaches.
Both Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 am until 3:30 pm 2009 ski & snowboard equipment from Salomon, Volkl, Nordica, Burton,
Head, Never Summer, K2, Atomic, Dynastar, Rossignol, Ride, Line, and Nidecker will be available for demo. Sugar’s ice skating rink, located
next to the Dave Nixon Pro Shop adjacent to parking lot D will be open and with Mother Nature’s cooperation tubing will be open as well.
“Ready get set go!” is what you’ll hear if you enter the snowball eating contest at 3:00 pm on Saturday. You’ll have two minutes to
eat as many tasty snowball look-a-likes as your stomach can stomach! Be sure to bring the whole family to watch a thunderous and spectacular fireworks display at the base of Sugar Mountain Resort, Saturday evening at 5:45 pm. After a long, hard day of skiing and snowboarding there’s nothing better than good food, warm drinks, and live music by Boss Hawg from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm.
Don’t miss the Edge of the World/Burton Rail Jam Expression Session at 12 noon on Sunday as talented snowboarders pull off some
of most spectacular tricks. Later in the day marvel as blocks of ice become beautiful winter works of art.

The KSOC Inc is a non-profit organization founded in 1964 for the purpose of promoting snow skiing. The membership has averaged over 400 each year and has been evenly divided between single men, women, and families; children under 21 are included in a family membership. Associate memberships are limited to those outside a 100 mile
radius of Knoxville, Tennessee.
