Rhett Gardner didn’t let
the pressure of a one-off
get to him as he took the
Canadian Junior Hockey
League’s (CJHL) Prospects
Game in stride last week in
Ontario.
“It’s in the back of your
mind, it’s hard not to think
about it, but I tried to take
it just as another day,”
Gardner said. “To stick to
what I do best and play my
game and I thought I did a
really good job of that.
“It was pretty competitive. There is a lot of eyes
in the sky at that game and
everyone wanted to bring
their best.”
The Prospects Game, featuring the top draft eligible
players from the CJHL’s
10 leagues, was a reunion
of sorts for Canada West
alumnus from the World
Junior A Challenge in
December. Still, with less
than 24 hours to assemble the team into one, it
was a unique exercise in
swift team building in the
Toronto suburb of Oakville.
“It was pretty much just
one day together, really, a lot of us knew each
other from Canada West,”

Gardner said. “We flew in
Monday and had a meeting,
Tuesday we had a morning
skate and had some one-ice
testing and then the game.”

The game itself saw Team
West erase an early deficit to
win by a 3-2 count. Gardner
picked up a second assist
on the game-winner from
Penticton Vees blueliner
Jarod Hilderman with just
7.3 seconds on the clock.
“It was a pretty fun way
to win, that’s for sure,” he
said.
The Moose Jaw native
had a golden opportunity to give his team the
lead earlier in the frame,
only to be robbed pointblank by Team East’s Justin
Kapelmaster.

progression in sledge
hockey opened doors on
the ice.
Far from green on the
athletic scale, Cederstrand
played major junior with
the Red Deer Rebels of the
Western Hockey League
in the late 1990s. After
taking his hand at a few
sports following his accident, Cederstrand took up
sledge hockey in late 2011.
“I was lucky I played
a lot of hockey growing
up. Having all that hockey sense behind me has
helped me accommodate
for what I have lacking getting on the sled,” he said.
“With the sled, it’s getting that manoeuvrability
down pat and just getting
to know it.
“It’s unreal. It’s something I’ve been training
extremely hard for the last
couple of years and to be
able to do (make the team)
is just incredible.”
After spending time
with Canada’s development
squad, Cederstrand was
inches away from competing on the world stage
last year as the first alter-

Fast forward one year
and Cederstrand was part
of a group of 19 skaters at
the team’s training camp
in mid-January competing
for the final 17 spots on
the roster.

“We knew going in they
were going to be trimming
it down and there was
only going to be a couple
of guys who wouldn’t be
going,” he said. “When you
got on the ice, you just had
an all-in type (mindset).
You just had to go out there
and show what you had.”
Turns out the six-foot-

had plenty to offer.
Not the least of which is
a physically imposing presence as one of the heavier
members of the roster with
a developing skating stride
to boot.
“It’s really hard to move
me off the puck,” he said.
“Once I get it, being that
big and strong, I’m able
to bully guys out there
and I’ve really improved
my speed. I’m one of the
quicker guys.
“You can get me out
there on a forecheck and I
can create a lot of open ice
for people and for myself.”
The 34-year-old is one
of three Albertans on the
roster and part of a trio of
players who will be making
their Team Canada debut
in the international competition. Ironically, he’s
also the oldest player wearing the maple-leaf sweater
by all of 10 days.
“When I was picked up
with the development team
I was lucky enough to captain that team and that’s
something they’re looking
for me to do here,” he said.
“To be an older guy and
have that leadership role.
I’ve been through a lot, and
to be able to come on and
pass that experience and
lead by example.”

international event’s proximity to the foothills a fact
which will enable friends

debutant sledge hockey
forward.
“I think I’ll have quite
a large cheering section
for me at the event,” he
said with a laugh. “It will
be very cool, the first time
they’ve been able to see me
play in a Canadian jersey.
“It’s something I’m looking forward to and I know
my family is definitely
looking forward to it.”
The 2015 World Sledge
Hockey Challenge runs
from Feb. 1-7 in Leduc.
The gold medal game will
be broadcast nationally on
TSN/RDS on the final day
of competition.
