Dear Musician: We are pleased to announce the Greater Grand Forks Symphony Orchestra’s annual Young Artist Competition Auditions to be held on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at the Josephine Campbell Recital Hall in the University of North Dakota Hughes Fine Arts Building beginning at 1:00 p.m. We hope that you or your student will consider participating in the audition. YOUNG ARTIST CONCERTO COMPETITION • This competition is open to students born on or after February 15, 1992 performing an orchestral instrument or piano, OR a singer residing in the United States within the state of North Dakota or within 120 miles of Grand Forks, ND • The selection must be one movement from a concerto or similar piece not to exceed 15 minutes in length. Singers may select a composition for voice and orchestra of equivalent length • Memorization is required • The competition selection must have an orchestral accompaniment and must be available for rental or purchase by the orchestra. • Three scores or three piano parts must be provided for the judging panel. Photocopies are acceptable. Three top prize winners as selected by a panel of judges will receive an award ($500, $250, $100). The first place winner will be invited to perform with the Greater Grand Forks Symphony at a Season Concert in the 2015-16 Season. The panel chose to award the Paige Towne Award to the top performer under 19 years from Grand Forks or East Grand Forks. There is a $5 discount for early applications postmarked by February 9th, 2015. Checks sent by that date can be made out for $20. Contestants may edit the movement or part of the work being performed to fit the time limit. This may be accomplished at least in part by omitting repeats and extended orchestral sections. Contestants who advance to the finals in the preliminary must perform the movement or part of the work IN ITS ENTIRETY and will be given the time to do so. No observers will be allowed into the preliminary round, finals are open to the public. Names of finalists will be posted at the completion of the first round. Finals begin at approximately 3:00 pm and are open to the public at no charge, friends and families are welcome to attend. There is a fee of $25.00 to enter the competition. Checks can be made out to the GGFSO; please indicate “Young Artist Competition” on the check.
