Peggy and her family came to Tring over 60 years ago and have been permanent fixtures in our church ever since. Those of you with long memories of Tring will recall Peggy from the Chemist’s shop. Those of us whose memories of Peggy are more recent will give a wonderfully cheerful and positive lady. We are also wondering if Peggy is the oldest active server in the Church of England. Peggy is very much the person responsible for setting up the communion service in the Furlongs each month. We give thanks to God for her 100 years. Next Sunday marks the end of our Epiphany season and we will celebrate the Presentation of Christ in the Temple (Candlemas). For those who love Choral Evensong there is a special evensong in Tring with a choir organised by Richard Grylls. With Candlemas our thoughts turn to Lent. Details of Lent house groups will be announced soon. Also, each year in Lent we have been watching a series of films. This year we are going to need to start a bit early because we have decided to take the Seven Deadly Sins as a theme. I suspect Lent is about trying to reject that which is unhelpful in our lives and lifestyles and is about trying to live better lives. The early church fathers recognised various categories of human vices which tempted us to sin. I was taught to remember them using the mnemonic PALEGAS: Pride, Anger, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Avarice (or greed), and Sloth. We will take each one of these themes and explore them through film. The films will be: 8th February, Envy - Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus 15th February, Gluttony – Micheal Moore’s Supersize me 22nd February, Greed -Danny Boyle’s Shallow Grave 1st March, Lust - Steve McQueen’s Shame* 8th March, Pride - Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr Ripley 15th March, Sloth – American Beauty 22nd March, Wrath – Scott Hicks’ Shine This set of films was put together as a group by Thinking Faith the online Journal of British Jesuists. We have detailed notes for each film. To be added to a Lent Film Mailing List, please contact [email protected] Each film will be at St John the Baptist, Aldbury at 6.30pm. There will be a short evening service beforehand at 6pm. *NB we have yet to watch Shame but there is some concern in the clergy team that it may not be suitable for our congregations so we reserve the right to change this film once we have seen it – there are plenty of others about lust!
