FEBRUARY - WORLD UNDERSTANDING MONTH
The month of February is special in the Rotary calendar since it is
designated the World Understanding Month. The month also
includes the anniversary of the first meeting of Rotary held on 23rd
February 1905, now designated World Understanding and Peace
Day.
Advancing world understanding and peace, which is expressed in
the fourth part of Object of Rotary, is an important focus of
Rotarian service. The internationality of its membership puts
Rotary in a unique situation to promote peace and goodwill.
Through club-to-club contacts, international service projects, peace
programs, and cultural and educational exchanges, Rotary clubs
worldwide make a meaningful contribution to world peace.
Good Luck and continue to Light Up Rotary.

PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE

PRESIDENT 2014-15
FEBRUARY 2015
As president of Rotary, it's my job to encourage and inspire Rotarians wherever I
meet them. It's also my job to listen to what they have to say. Whether it's a successful project or a challenge to overcome, a great Rotary Day or a new idea, I want to
hear what Rotarians are thinking, doing, and planning. So whenever I travel, I ask
my hosts to talk to me about their clubs. What's going well, where do they see a need
to improve, and what can we at RI headquarters do to help?
The answers are always interesting and often surprising. Sometimes I have a suggestion or an idea to contribute;
sometimes I am able to make a connection that will move a project forward. Often, I go back to Evanston with ideas
and insights that help guide us in our decisions. But what I value most about these conversations are the stories I
hear – the stories that, taken together, tell the story of Rotary.
In Atlanta, I attended a Rotary event honoring teachers and heard story after story about the gift of literacy and
how it transforms lives. In Istanbul, I attended a wheelchair race and learned how Turkish Rotarians are working to
improve the lives of people with disabilities. In Lima, Peru, I talked to a former Rotaractor who waited nearly 20
years to be invited to join a Rotary club, and heard about how returning to Rotary has transformed her life.
I've heard stories that have made me laugh, and stories that have moved me to tears. I've heard stories of how our
service changes the lives of others, and how it changes us as Rotarians. When I hear these stories, I can't help but
wonder: How many other lives could we change for the better by bringing more people into Rotary? And how many
more people could we bring into
Rotary simply by sharing our
own Rotary stories?

Every three years, The Rotary Foundation sponsors a peace symposium as a preconvention activity. The next peace symposium will be held in São Paulo, 4-5 June.
The triennial peace symposium is the vehicle to showcase our Rotary Peace Fellows, who earn master's degrees and
certificates through our Rotary Peace Centers; to educate Rotarians about this peace-related education and scholarship program; to introduce our donors and potential donors to the program; and to explore ways that Rotarians
and peace fellows can collaborate in peace-building. Highlights of each symposium have included international
speakers in the peace field, such as Nobel Peace Prize laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu; breakout sessions featuring peace fellows working on the front lines to build peace; and Rotarians active in the peace field.
This year, the first plenary session will feature 1987 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Oscar Arias Sánchez of Costa Rica.
He is a two-time president of Costa Rica, 1986-90 and 2006-10. During his first presidential term, he engaged the
nations of Central America in peace discussions that led to the signing of the Esquipulas II Accords, and ultimately
to the end of the various armed conflicts in the region.
The plans of the São Paulo peace symposium committee are creative and exciting, with elements not offered at past
symposia. They will involve the 80 Rotary Peace Centers alumni in attendance.
If you have never attended a peace symposium, this is a special opportunity that will inform and educate you on
Rotary's service to promote peace. If you have attended any of the symposia in Salt Lake City, Birmingham, or
Bangkok, you will especially appreciate this innovative program.

Rotary Club of Amman Ammon launches community project to provide Iraqi refugees
with urgent sanitary facilities.

The Rotary Club of Amman Ammon completed a community project that provides additional sanitary facilities to cater for the urgent
needs of Iraqi refugees currently
taking shelter in Saint Elias Greek
Catholic Church in Marj Al
Hamam. The inaugural ceremony
was attended by the Club’s President and Rotary District 2452 Assistant Governor along with fellow
club members.

The project expanded the church’s current sanitary facilities to
for the urgent needs of around 100 Iraqi refugees residing

in the church's hall after fleeing their hometowns in Mosul to
S escape the control of the Islamic State terrorist group. The project includes four additional toilets, indoor showers, sinks, and
changing rooms in addition to setting up a solar system.
F The project which had an estimated total cost of more than JD
R 18,000 was fundraised from the Rotary Club of Amman Ammon
who’s contribution exceeded JD 2,000 in addition to a number

and Leon Minas with JD 4,000, Mrs. Maisoun Sarraf with JD
500, in addition to JD 2000 and JD 200 from two Jordanian donors. In-kind donors included Mr. Maher Asfour who donated
the prefab structure which was equivalent to JD 2500, Izzat
Marji Group donated four showers and mixers in addition to
four wash basins and mixers equivalent to JD 1,000, Mr. Ramzi
Al-Muna donated four European W.C. and related accessories
equivalent to JD 1000, and JEME (Jordanian Electrical & Mechanical Engineering) represented by Mr. Ramzi Sawalha donated the installation of all the fittings, piping, and fixtures which
was equivalent to JD 2000.
It is worth to note that Rotary clubs in Jordan include hundreds
of men and women working in professional fields and various
specialties, who volunteer to help serve their community and
supporting its needs via setting up service projects. Projects are
aimed to help and support underprivileged individuals in the
community to change their lives to the better and grow hope in
their hearts.
Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders
who provide humanitarian service and help to build goodwill
and peace in the world. There are 1.2 million Rotary members in
33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Rotary clubs have been serving communities worldwide for more than a century.

Disaster Relief Committee Tripoli, Lebanon
One more time, we were able to LIGHT UP ROTARY through a
Disaster Relief Committee has been doing a lot of efforts the last
years especially due to the dramatic situation that our beloved
country was passing through.

A subcommittee emerged out of this group to take care of the city
of Tripoli. Four clubs of Tripoli : RC Tripoli / RC Tripoli-Mina /
RC Tripoli-Maarad & RC Tripoli-Cosmopolis joined their efforts
to support and help through a donation to the Red Cross and specifically to the Disaster Management & Relief group .The giving
consisted of FIBER OPTIC SYSTEM FOR DISASTER plus
two Driving Ambulance Recording and other technical materials.

LIGHT UP ROTARY .. this time in the community
south of Lebanon:
Under the patronage of the Mayor of Saida Mr. Mohammad
Saoudi, RC of Saida inaugurated the 12 Emergency numbers
boards in main squares in Saida. This project could be executed
all over the country with the help of other Rotary clubs. On behalf of DG Khalil Al Sharif, I want to congratulate President
Hisham Assad and all members of RC Saida for this

‫ﺣﻣﻼت اﻟﺗطﻌﯾم ﺿد ﺷﻠل اﻷطﻔﺎل ﻹﻗﺎﻣﺔ ﻣﻧطﻘﺔ ﻋﺎزﻟﺔ ﺿد ﻣرض اﻹﯾﺑوﻻ‪.‬‬
‫وﻓﻲ اﻟﺷرق اﻷوﺳط‪ ،‬ﻟم ﯾﻌﺛر ﻋﻠﻰ اﻟﻔﯾروس ﻓﻲ إﺳراﺋﯾل أو اﻟﺿﻔﺔ اﻟﻐرﺑﯾﺔ وﻏزة طوال اﻷﺷﮭر اﻟﺗﺳﻌﺔ اﻷﺧﯾرة‪ ،‬وﻛﺎﻧت آﺧر ﻣرة ﻋﺛر ﻋﻠﯾﮫ ﻓﯾﮭﺎ ﻓﻲ‬
‫إﺳراﺋﯾل ﻓﻲ ‪ 30‬ﻣﺎرس ‪.2014‬‬
‫ﻛﻣﺎ أن آﺧر ﺣﺎﻻت ﺷﻠل أطﻔﺎل ﻋﺛر ﻋﻠﯾﮭﺎ ﻓﻲ اﻟدول اﻟﻌرﺑﯾﺔ ﻛﺎﻧت ﺣﺎﻟﺔ ﺳورﯾﺎ ﻓﻲ ﯾﻧﺎﯾر ‪ 2014‬وﺣﺎﻟﺗﺎن ﻓﻲ اﻟرﺻﺎﻓﺔ ﺑﺎﻟﻌراق ﻓﻲ أﺑرﯾل اﻟﻣﺎﺿﻲ‪،‬‬
‫وﻓﻲ ‪ 21‬ﯾﻧﺎﯾر اﻟﻣﻘﺑل ﯾﻛون ﻗد ﻣر ﻋﺎم ﻟم ﺗﺣدث ﻓﯾﮫ ﺣﺎﻟﺔ إﺻﺎﺑﺔ ﻓﻲ ﺳورﯾﺎ‪.‬‬
‫وﻋن ﺣﻣﻼت اﻟوﻗﺎﯾﺔ ﺑﺎﻟﺗطﻌﯾم‪ ،‬ﻗﺎل ﻣﺣﻣود إﻧﮫ ﺳﺗﺟري ﺣﻣﻼت ﺗطﻌﯾم ﻗوﻣﯾﺔ أو ﺟزﺋﯾﺔ ﻓﻲ ﻣﺻر واﻟﻌراق واﻷردن وﻟﺑﻧﺎن وﺗرﻛﯾﺎ ﻓﻲ اﻟﺷﮭرﯾن‬
‫اﻟﻣﻘﺑﻠﯾن‪.‬‬
‫وأﺿﺎف أن اﻟروﺗﺎري اﻟدوﻟﻲ ﻗدم ﻟﺳورﯾﺎ ﻧﺻف ﻣﻠﯾون دوﻻر ﻛﻣﻌوﻧﺔ ﻋﺎﺟﻠﺔ ﻟﻠﺗطﻌﯾم اﻟذي ﺗم ﻓﻲ ﻛل أﻧﺣﺎء اﻟﺑﻼد ﺑﻐض اﻟﻧظر ﻋن اﻟﺟﮭﺔ اﻟﺗﻲ ﺗﺳﯾطر‬
‫ﻋﻠﯾﮭﺎ‪ ،‬وﻗد ﺳﺑق ﻟﮫ أن ﻗدم ﻟﻣﺻر ‪ 406.7‬أﻟف دوﻻر ﺗﻌﺎدل ‪ 2.8‬ﻣﻠﯾون ﺟﻧﯾﮫ ﻟﺷراء اﻷﻣﺻﺎل اﻟﻼزﻣﺔ ﻟﻠﺗﺣﺻﯾن ﺣﯾﻧﻣﺎ اﺣﺗﺎﺟﺗﮭﺎ وزارة اﻟﺻﺣﺔ‬
‫اﻟﺻرﯾﺔ اﻟﺗﻲ ﺗﻘوم ﺑﺟﮭود اﻟﺗطﻌﯾم وﺳوف ﺗﺻل إﻟﻰ اﻟﻘﺎھرة ﻓﻲ أواﺋل ﻣﺎرس‪.‬‬
‫ﻟﻠﻘﺿﺎء ﻋﻠﻰ ﺷﻠل اﻷطﻔﺎل ﻋن طرﯾق اﻟﻣﺳﺎھﻣﺔ اﻟﻌﻣﻠﯾﺔ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻘﺿﺎء ﻋﻠﻰ ﺷﻠل اﻷطﻔﺎل ﻧﮭﺎﺋﯾﺎ ﻟﻣدة ﺳﺗﺔ أﯾﺎم ﺗزور ‪WGM‬وﺗﻘوم ﻣﺻر ﺑﺎﻟﺗروﯾﺞ ﻟﺣﻣﻠﺔ‬
‫ﻓﯾﮭﺎ اﻹﺳﻛﻧدرﯾﺔ واﻷﻗﺻر وﺗﻠﻘﻲ ﻣﺣﺎﺿرات ﻋن اﻟﻣﺑﺎدرة اﻟﻌﺎﻟﻣﯾﺔ ﻻﺳﺗﺋﺻﺎل ﺷﻠل اﻷطﻔﺎل‪.‬‬
‫وﻗد ﺳﺑق ﻟﮭﺎ أن زارت ﻟﻧﻔس اﻟﻐرض ﻛﻼ ﻣن ﺑرﯾطﺎﻧﯾﺎ وأﻣرﯾﻛﺎ وﻛﻧدا وﻧﯾوزﯾﻠﻧدا واﻟﮭﻧد وﺑﻧﺟﻼدﯾش‪.‬‬
‫وﺗﺷﻣل اﻟﺟوﻟﺔ اﻟروﺗﺎرﯾﺔ ﻛﻼ ﻣن ﻣﺻر واﻟﺑﺣرﯾن واﻹﻣﺎرات‪ ،‬وﯾﻧﺗظر أن ﺗﻣﺗد إﻟﻰ اﻷردن وﻟﺑﻧﺎن ﺛم اﻟﯾوﻧﺎن واﻟﻧروﯾﺞ‪.‬‬
‫وﻣن اﻟﻣﻌروف أن ﻣؤﺳﺳﺔ ﺑﯾل وﻣﯾﻠﻧدا ﺟﯾﺗس ﺗﻘدم ﻟﻠروﺗﺎري اﻟدوﻟﻲ دوﻻرﯾن ﻣﻘﺎﺑل ﻛل دوﻻر ﯾﺗﺑرع ﺑﮫ اﻟروﺗﺎرﯾون ﻟﻠﻘﺿﺎء ﻋﻠﻰ ﺷﻠل اﻷطﻔﺎل ﻓﻲ‬
‫اﻟﻌﺎﻟم‪ ،‬وﻗد ﺗم ﺟﻣﻊ ‪ 780‬أﻟف دوﻻر ﺗﺻل ﻗﯾﻣﺗﮭﺎ ﺑﺗﺑرع ﺑﯾل ﺟﯾﺗس إﻟﻰ ‪ 2.4‬ﻣﻠﯾون وﻻر ﺗﻛﻔﻲ ﻟﺗطﻌﯾم ‪ 3‬ﻣﻼﯾﯾن و‪ 896‬أﻟف طﻔل ﻓﻲ اﻟﻌﺎﻟم‪ ،‬ﻛﻣﺎ أﺷﺎر‬
‫ﻣﻣﺛل اﻟروﺗﺎري اﻟدوﻟﻲ‬

Each year, Rotary funds some of
the world’s most dedicated and
brightest professionals to study at
our Rotary Peace Centers. These
fellows are committed to the advancement of peace, and often go
on to serve as leaders in national governments, NGOs,
the military, law enforcement, and international organizations such as the United Nations and World Bank.

PEACEFELLOWSHIPS?
Each year, Rotary selects individuals from around the
world to receive fully funded academic fellowships at
one of our peace centers. These fellowships cover tuition and fees, room and board, round-trip transportation, and all internship/field study expenses. Two types
of peace fellowships are available.
Rotary Award for
World Understanding (RAWU)
MASTER'S DEGREE
The course offer master’s degree fellowships at premier
universities in fields related to peace and conflict resolution and prevention. Programs last 15–24 months
and require a practical internship of 2–3 months during the academic break. Each year Rotary award up to
50 master’s fellowships from these institutions:
