Fourth Sunday In Ordinary Time
Thank you!
Almost five years ago as part of a long-term strategic planning process, this community committed to renovating our school.
After more than thirty years of heavy use by both parish and
school communities, it was well past time for a complete overhaul. Two years of listening sessions, careful work with a talented
architect, town hall meetings, and trust in God’s providence resulted in a design that fully renovated the existing school while
creatively developing additional usable space without expanding
the building and the cost of the project.
Through generous “in-kind” donations of time and talent we
were able to keep design and engineering costs to a minimum.
Through a competitive bidding process we ended up with a great
General Contractor (Watterson) who worked with our exceptional
Building Committee to ensure this very complicated remodel was
done on time and on budget.
Then, completely outdoing our fundraising consultant’s prediction of an ability to raise $1.5 million in pledges, through your
generosity we raised $2.6 million of the $3.0 million construction
budget. That’s great news!
Now, we seek to pay down the remaining $400,000 as much
as possible as we convert to a conventional mortgage. As we enter the third and final year of our Capital Campaign we reach out
this weekend “one more time” to solicit new donors as well as
ask previous donors to consider making a new donation or to extend their pledge. If you have not yet seen this stunninglybeautiful renovation, please feel free to walk through and marvel
at what the generosity of 393 households has brought about.

Come Learn about what the Church teaches about
the diabolical, and about demonic possession. Why
does God allow this to happen? And what can be done
about it? Fr. Patrick explains.
The Archdiocese’s annual St. Francis Awards are
receiving some updates for 2015. The awards dinner honoring exceptional parish volunteers is being moved from its traditional time in February to
early October, around the feast day of St. Francis
of Assisi. Nomination forms already received will
continue to be held in consideration for the 2015
awards. While specifics regarding the dinner and
ceremony are being finalized, all are welcome to
continue submitting nominations with an official
deadline of August 31. Forms can be found at
archdioceseofanchorage.org/st-francis-award.

Capital Campaign
Even though our newly-remodeled school building is
open our fundraising efforts continue as we seek to
pay down our mortgage. We now have a truly-beautiful
faith formation space of which we can be justifiably
proud. Thank you to everyone who has sacrificed to
make this project a reality. Thank you for your continued support of our Capital Campaign to renovate our
school/faith formation building. We are at 86% of
reaching our goal of $3.0 million with one year remaining in our campaign! Thank you very much for helping
in this effort!

Liturgical Receptions –
Leads a group that prepares and/or serves refreshments for celebrations such as First Communion, Confirmation, etc.

A chairperson to lead the group in the Gospel of Life.
Environment & Arts Decorate the church building and worship space to
complement the liturgical calendar and enhance worship.
Nursery Open to parishioners with children at 8:30 and 11:30

Kudos to our St. Elizabeth’s students and friends: This
past week our students working with Lumen Christi
seniors made 810 bags of trail mix and 1000 sandwiches for Brother Francis Shelter. The Fourth Grade
class delivered them to the Shelter where they were
given a tour and learned about the services the Shelter
offers the clients. Thank you, Students, Staff and Volunteers! They’ve already set a new goal for next year –
1500 sandwiches!
Habitat for Humanity update: Are you or is someone
you know living in substandard housing and wondering
if Habitat for Humanity is for you? There will be several
opportunities in February (from the 13th to the 21st) to
learn more. Stop at the Peace and Justice bulletin

Habitat for Humanity is looking for a ReStore Assistant
Manager and a Global Village Coordinator (Part Time).

St. Francis House is in need of volunteers to help stock
shelves or assist with shopping. Currently the food

RAIS Meals Team: February is our month to provide
food for refugees arriving in Anchorage. So far the
families are all from Somalia. If you are interested in

A Path Appears: If you missed the first of the three
documentaries in this series, you can still catch it

independentlens/path-appears/. This was a powerful
introduction to survivors of sex trafficking, but rather
than being totally depressing, it ended with hope. And
the invitation to be part of the solution. Next week the
program will explore poverty in the U.S., Haiti, Colombia
and Kenya, once again inviting us to get involved and
make a difference.

March for Life in Washington, D.C. (as many as half a million), the West Coast Walk for Life in San Francisco
(50,000), the March for Life in Chicago (4,000), and gatherings in virtually all 50 states. Many wrote of the predominance of youth in the movement, many of whom carried

U.S. HOUSE VOTES COMPLETE BAN
ON TAXPAYER FUNDED ABORTIONS
On January 22nd, the U.S. House of Representatives voted
242-179, with 239 Republicans (including Alaska’s Rep.
Don Young) and three Democrats voting to ban taxpayer
funding of abortions under H.R. 7, while 178 Democrats and
one Republican voted against it.The House has twice before
supported virtually identical bills, but this will be the first
time that there is a pro-life U.S. Senate to take it up.
Abortion funding (with narrow exceptions) had been
denied for decades in all federal programs, but a passel of
loopholes which fund abortions were opened up with
Obamacare. H.R. 7 would close those loopholes and codify
all of the restrictions so that they don’t have to be voted on
annually.

WE’RE UP AGAIN!
February is St. Elizabeth’s month to provide groceries,
personal care items and hot meals to incoming refugees. Our group supplies the items necessary to start
out in their new homes; about two weeks worth of food,
cleaning supplies, toiletries and assorted sundries. Sometimes the need is great, as when a large
family arrives with no friends or relatives here. At other
times the new arrivals move in with families or people
who are already settled here, so the immediate need is
less. But really, it’s not only about the practical issue
of having food and supplies on hand. It’s as much
about the welcome, the knowledge that people in their
new community are embracing their arrival and wanting to make their transition as pleasant and easy as
possible. We are part of their first impression of their
new city/state/country. Please join us in making it a

We are running our third annual Teens For Jeans"
drive starting in January to help those in need within our
Alaskan Community. Last year we successfully collected
3,918 jeans! Every pair we collect goes to Covenant
House and they distribute them to all who are in need.

(infant through adult), any condition. You will help me
make a positive difference in someone's life!

Ann Seton School!
On each day of last week,
we celebrated that Catholic Schools are Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service in our Parish,
Community, Students, Nation, Vocations, Staff and
Volunteers. Highlights of the week included a student-led Sunday Mass and School Open House,
making and delivering 1,000 sandwiches and 800
bags of trail mix to Brother Francis Shelter, a
school Talent Show, an All-Catholic Schools Mass,
vocation presentations, a Spelling Bee, and a
school-wide “What My Faith Means to Me” essay
contest.
“Lord God, You blessed Elizabeth Ann Seton with
gifts of grace as wife and mother, educator and
foundress, so that she might spend her life in service to Your people. Through her example and
prayers, may we learn to express our love for You
in love for our fellow men and women.”

being voted Distinguished Alumni by their peers. Sarah
received the honors for the 2014-2015 school year and
