Hillsborough County Public Schools Elementary Mathematics Parent Connection Grade 1 – Unit 12: Three Dimensional shapes In this unit your child will work to build an understanding of the following: Distinguish between defining attributes versus non-defining attributes o Defining attributes such as, triangles are closed and three-sided o Non-defining attributes such as, color, orientation, overall size o Build and draw shapes determined by defining attributes Compose three- dimensional shapes to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape o Three-dimensional shapes, which is a solid figure include: cubes, rectangular prisms, cones, cylinders and sphere o Composite shapes are shapes that are made up of other shapes, for example a sharpened pencil can be made from a cylinder and a cone Check out the “Parent Quick Smarts” video by scanning the QR code or the Internet link provided. Sample tasks your child should be able to work through by the end of the unit: Given the three-dimensional shapes below, sort the shapes and explain what attribute they are grouped by. Tina makes another shape just like the one below. Then she combines the shapes. What could her new shape look like? Stack the three-dimensional shapes to make a new shape.
