According to Scripture, communion (also called the Lord’s Supper and the
Eucharist [from the Greek word for thanksgiving]), was celebrated weekly
by the disciples within weeks of Jesus’ death. We know from the writings
of Paul that some of the liturgy we use was in place by the 50s C.E.
The opening lines to the Great Prayer of Thanksgiving, often called the
sursum corda (which is Latin for “Lift up your hearts” and comes from
Scripture, specifically the Psalms), have been used for this purpose since at
least 215 C.E.
It is our custom at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church to receive communion together. After you take a piece of bread or a cup of juice from the
tray, please wait until all have been served. At a verbal cue from a worship
leader, we will all eat the bread or drink the juice together.

This morning’s music: The opening hymn centers around a reference
to the well-known parable of the Prodigal Son, and the fourth stanza
forms an effective bridge between that gospel story and the celebration
of Communion. The text was written by David Gambrell, who attends
Highland Presbyterian Church in Louisville, Kentucky, and is an Associate
for Worship for the PCUSA. Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672) set John 3:16 to
music as part of a collection of 29 choral pieces on biblical texts entitled
Geistliche Chormusik (Spiritual Choral Music), published in 1648. The
five independent voices offer a rich texture of overlapping text, coming
together and singing as one at key moments such as the ending: “but have
eternal life.” The motet is sung in German. We close worship this morning
with a hymn that draws on a variety of passages from the Old Testament
that call attention to God’s faithfulness toward the Chosen People and
the promise of a new covenant written on the heart. The hymn is sung
to music by Sir Arthur Sullivan. This hymn tune is commonly used in
England for “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear.”
Christian Education
Elementary LOGOS is our Tuesday afternoon (4 –6:30 p.m. for grades
1–5 and 5:15 – 6:30 p.m. for Kindergarten) program for elementary
age children. It includes Bible study, music, recreation and dinner.

Souper Bowl of Caring 2015 is back! Once again the children and youth
of GPMC are asking for your support as they collect nonperishable food
items and monetary donations to help our neighbors who are in need.
We’re already at 349 food items, crushing last years’ donation of 179
items! Now let’s see if we can make it to 500 items. Bring your donations
to Fellowship Hall and choose your Super Bowl 2015 winner by placing
them in your pick’s designated box. Right now we have 165 votes for the
Patriots and 110 votes for the Seahawks. Will GPMC pick this year’s Super
Bowl winner? Keep those donations coming! Even after the Super Bowl is
over, the Souper Bowl of Caring continues until February 22.
It’s time to get your act ready for our Third Annual GPMC Coffeehouse
on February 28. This year’s coffeehouse will support the 2015 TUXIS High
School Mission Trip to Chavies, Kentucky. Our youth will be partnering
with the Appalachian Service Project and will be helping families in

Contact Information Needed for College Students. Spring is coming and
that means final exams, graduation, or just the end of another school
year! The Parish Life Council would like to reach out to GPMC’s college
students and let them know that we are thinking of them. If you have a
college student in your family, please send their name, college mailing
address, e-mail address, and year in school to Janet Ruthven at jruthven@
gpmchurch.org, or at 313.882.5330 ext. 123. We’d like to show them that
they are always in our hearts and prayers, no matter where they may be!
Youth Sunday is coming up soon. High school students are invited to
participate leading Youth Sunday services next week, February 8, at 9 a.m.,
11 a.m., and 5 p.m. We are practicing for the service during Middle Hour
today in the 3rd floor youth lounge. We’ll be practicing music for the
service this Tuesday from 6:30 - 7 p.m. in the choir room. Even if you
don’t usually come to Sunday School or to TUXIS, you are encouraged to

Registration is closed for the High School Mission Trip. All 25 spots are
filled for the 2015 high school mission trip to Chavies, KY! Stay tuned for
information about our upcoming fundraising events.
Do you like reading fiction? GPMC has two Faith and Literature groups:
one group reads short stories (Short Story Theology) and one reads novels
(The Novel as Theology). The next Novel as Theology group meeting is
on Wednesday, Feb. 25 from 7:30 - 9 p.m. The February novel is J.R.R.

Tolkien’s “The Hobbit.” The next Short Story Theology group meeting
is on Wednesday, Feb. 11 from 7:15 - 8:30 p.m. at the home of Peter
and Shawn Henry. The February short story is “When You’re Excused,
You’re Excused” by Bruce Jay Friedman.
Four Books, One Story – The next meeting is on Tuesday, February 24
(because Peter will in Honduras for our usual meeting) from 7 - 8 p.m.
This once-a-month, minimal homework study is a look at the story of Jesus through all four gospels. We will be comparing stories that appear in
all four texts, noting differences and similarities, and asking the question,
“Why are things different from one writer to the next?”
Adult Bible Study – If you’ve been considering joining a Bible study, this
is a good time to join the Adult Bible Study, which meets from 7:30 - 9
p.m., the first and third Wednesdays of the month. Last week, we began a
study of the Gospel of John. The next meeting is Feb. 4.
Reel Theology meets the first Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the
Jordan Cinema Room (Third Floor). The February movie on Monday,
Feb. 2, is Girl Rising. Chronicling the lives of girls who have been freed
from domestic servitude, forced labor and worse. It is a documentary
about the importance of educating girls around the world.
Music
The next concert in Music at Memorial’s “Songs of the Spirit” series is
on Sunday, February 15, at 3:00 in the afternoon. Our own Memorial
Church Staff Singers will present a program entitled “Tasty Treats.”
Sopranos Carol Ambrogio Wood, Sheena Law, mezzo-soprano Diane
Schoff, tenor Michael Fowler, and baritone Kenneth Shepherd offer an
afternoon of treats for the ears and the palate. Enjoy favorite opera arias,
art songs, songs from musical theater, and an afternoon tea in Barbour
Chapel. Due to limited seating, we ask you to reserve a seat in advance,
even if you are a season ticket holder. Please respond by February 8 to

Outreach
“Little Dresses” for Malawi – This year’s winter project is waiting for
you to pick up in Fellowship Hall on Sunday, Feb. 1 and Feb. 8 during
Middle Hour. These dresses will go to the girls in Chaona Village where
a team of seven GPMC members joined others last October to build
classrooms there. Come see us in Fellowship Hall, pick up your dress
kit and join this mission effort. You are also welcome to contact Kathie

boer Memorial Dresses for Malawi. A donation in memory of Martha
Nyboer, Chair of PW/GPMC Sewing for many years, will fund this effort.

February 4th is the last Call for Donations going to Honduras! We’d
especially love to bring a few more scissors, vitamins, foot or antibiotic
creams, and serving utensils. If you have a kids book in Spanish, spare
(medium to large) crochet hooks, or a soccer ball, we’d bring those too!

Eastside Take Control Offers Resources and Support for Those in Career Transition – ETC is a team of representatives from 6 Grosse Pointe
area churches who have collaborated to provide a portfolio of resources
for people (church members or not) in job transition in order to equip,
encourage and empower them to move forward. We have experts willing
to offer free services in the areas of resume writing, interviewing skills, networking, job leads, spirituality, wellness, coaching, accountability, business
start-ups and more. Our Yahoo e-mail distribution group sends out regular
announcements on job openings and networking events. In addition, on
Wednesday mornings a small support group meets in our Church library
at 8:30 a.m. Also, Pastor Ben VanArragon of First Christian Reformed
Church at 1444 Maryland in Grosse Pointe Park, meets with job seekers
in his office by appointment for “Digging Deeper” into the spiritual and
emotional aspects of job loss. If you’re an employer with job opportunities, or a professional with advice or resources to share, please let us know.

Grosse Pointe Memorial Church is celebrating 150 years in the community with the community. Our vision is to go big, really big, this year with
an amazing opportunity for our entire community and all generations to
partner with the Kids Against Hunger Coalition to pack food for the hungry. We will pack food for 150,000 people right here at GPMC. We need
your help! We are asking groups and individuals to give the gift of time
on March 7 and 21. The days will be divided in two hour shifts: 10 a.m.
- 12 p.m., 12 - 2 p.m., and 2 - 4 p.m. We need you and your family, and
your friends, and your scout troop, and your book club, and your council.

Faith Communities Coalition (FCC), a community of Eastside Churches
who want to help with Foster Care in Michigan, will have their quarterly

meeting at GPMC next Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 6:30 p.m. Michelle Kuhar,
Community Relations Director for Covenant House Michigan, will be our
featured speaker and will discuss homeless youth in Detroit and how so
many foster kids end up on the street. Want to learn more? This meeting

The Session of Grosse Pointe Memorial Church has called a
congregational meeting for Sunday, February 8, at 10:15 a.m. in
Fellowship Hall. This is one of our two annual meetings and is for the
purpose of receiving the annual report, receiving a report on the annual
budget, and acting on proposed changes to the terms of call for Peter
Henry. Copies of the report will be available online beginning Feb. 9.
On Thursday, February 26 from 6:15-8:30, GPMC will be hosting an
event for The Family Center of Grosse Pointe & Harper Woods titled
“Drugs and Alcohol: What Parents and Professionals Need to Know.”
The event will kick off with a keynote address by national lecturer, author,
interventionist, and Oprah Winfrey Show veteran, Debra Jay called
“Confronting Realities, Preventing Tragedies” and will also include
breakout sessions related to how to have cooperative conversations with
youth, what are the drugs out there today - from prescription to harder
“street” drugs, and legal consequences stemming from substance issues.
