Ordination and Installation of Officers
Within the Presbyterian tradition, officers are ordained to office and
installed in their positions during public worship. The service for this
ordination and installation includes Paul’s famous reminder of the
“varieties of gifts but the same Spirit” from I Corinthians, as well as
constiutional questions mandated by the Book of Order of the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.). Just as importantly, Presbyterians participate in an
ancient prayer practice, the “laying on of hands.” This is both a
physical reminder of the blessing of those who have served before our newest
officers, as well as part of seeking the power of the Holy Spirit for these
newest officers. Within the Presbyterian tradition, the laying on of hands

is limited to those who have been ordained previously as ruling elders or
teaching elders. The constitutional questions that the officers are
answering are located at the back of the bulletin. Please note that our
liturgy also includes questions of the congregation.

ruling elders serve a 3 year term on the Session, which in the Presbyterian
tradition is the governing board of the local congregation. The deacons
serve a 3 year term on the Board of Deacons, which is the pastoral arm
of church leadership in a Presbyterian congregation. We give thanks for

This morning’s music: The musical setting of the psalm comes from
the Taizé community in France. The Taizé community is an ecumenical
monastic order with over a hundred brothers from Protestant and Catholic
traditions, originating from about thirty countries. They are known for
their beautiful music which, with its elegant simplicity, can be sung by the
many pilgrims from around the world who visit Taizé.
John A. Dalles wrote the text of the hymn “God, Bless Your Church with
Strength” in 1984 for the 150th anniversary of First Presbyterian Church,
South Bend, Indiana, where he was associate pastor at the time. The Rev.
Dr. Dalles is currently pastor and head of staff at Wekiva Presbyterian
Church in Longwood, Florida. The music for the hymn comes from a
1736 collection of music edited by J. S. Bach. It is believed that Bach
himself composed this melody.
The words of the anthem are taken from a poem by Charles Hamilton
Sorley, written in May 1915, and published in a 1917 volume entitled A
Treasury of War Poetry. The title is a reference to the opening Latin words
of Psalm 40, which begins “I waited patiently for the Lord.” The poetry
was set to music in 1919 by the Irish composer Charles Wood.

Christian Education
Elementary LOGOS is our Tuesday afternoon (4 –6:30 p.m. for grades
1–5 and 5:15 – 6:30 p.m. for Kindergarten) program for elementary age
children. It includes Bible study, music, recreation and dinner. This
Tuesday, January 27 (A) - Sports Night! Donate canned goods for Souper
Bowl of Caring.
WoW! Winter Retreat, February 6 – 8, for 4th, 5th, and 6th Grade
Children – We had so much fun last year at Camp Michindoh, that we are
going back again! The cost for this awesome two night trip is $130 which
includes meals, lodging, activities and transportation. Camp Michindoh
is located in Hillsdale, MI. For more information contact Lisa Turner at

Souper Bowl of Caring 2015 is back! Once again the children and youth
of GPMC are asking for your support as they collect nonperishable food
items and monetary donations to help our neighbors who are in need.
Bring your donations to Fellowship Hall between now and Super Bowl
Sunday and choose your Super Bowl 2015 winner by placing them in your
pick’s designated box. We want to beat last year’s total donation of 179
items, so please give generously!
It’s time to get your act ready for our Third Annual GPMC Coffeehouse
on February 28. This year’s coffeehouse will support the 2015 TUXIS High
School Mission Trip to Chavies, Kentucky. Our youth will be partnering
with the Appalachian Service Project and will be helping families in

Contact Information Needed for College Students. Spring is coming and
that means final exams, graduation, or just the end of another school
year! The Parish Life Council would like to reach out to GPMC’s college
students and let them know that we are thinking of them. If you have a
college student in your family, please send their name, college mailing

they are always in our hearts and prayers, no matter where they may be!
Youth Sunday is coming up soon. High school students are invited to
participate leading Youth Sunday services on February 8 at 9 a.m., 11
a.m., and 5 p.m. We are practicing for the service during Middle Hour on
Sunday, January 28 and Sunday, February 1 from 10 - 11 a.m. in the 3rd
floor youth lounge. We’ll be practicing music for the service on Tuesdays
from 6:30 - 7 p.m. in the choir room. Even if you don’t usually come to
Sunday School or to TUXIS, you are encouraged to join in. The more,

Five Spots Remain for the High School Mission Trip. This summer, the
high school mission trip will be traveling to Chavies, KY to work with the
Appalachia Service Project (ASP) from June 21-28, 2015. The week will
include construction work on local families’ homes as well as devotions,
music, cultural events, good food, and a fun day of recreational activities.

Do you like reading fiction? GPMC has two Faith and Literature groups:
one group reads short stories (Short Story Theology) and one reads novels
(The Novel as Theology). The next Novel as Theology group meeting is on
Wednesday, Jan. 28 from 7:30 - 9 p.m. The January novel is Ian McEwan’s
“The Children Act.” The next Short Story Theology group meeting is
on Wednesday, Feb. 11 from 7:15 - 8:30 p.m. at the home of Peter and
Shawn Henry. The February short story is “When You’re Excused, You’re
Excused” by Bruce Jay Friedman.
Called by God ... Finding the Right Path for You is a 4 week series for
young adults and people in transition (or thinking of transition). This class,
offered Thursdays from 7 - 8:30 p.m. concludes on Jan. 29, by Peter Henry
and GPMC member Sadie Bolos O’Neill, will encourage and inspire you
to listen for God’s guidance in vocational decisions. It will also provide
practical next steps for identifying priorities, setting goals and, acting upon
those goals. Sign up by contacting the Christian Education Office.
Four Books, One Story – The next meeting is on Monday, Feb. 16 from
7 - 8 p.m. This once-a-month, minimal homework study is a look at the
story of Jesus through all four gospels. We will be comparing stories that
appear in all four texts, noting differences and similarities, and asking the
question, “Why are things different from one writer to the next?”
Adult Bible Study – If you’ve been considering joining a Bible study, this
is a good time to join the Adult Bible Study, which meets from 7:30 - 9
p.m., the first and third Wednesdays of the month. Last week, we began a
study of the Gospel of John.
Scripture and Conversation for Women – If the weekly 7 a.m. Women’s
Bible Study is just too early for you, and you’d like to enjoy Bible study
with a group of women, we have another opportunity for you! Beginning
Wednesday, January 28, there will be Scripture and Conversation for
Women, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, the fourth Wednesday of each month.
There will be time for relaxed fellowship, followed by a time of Bible study,

which will be led by Susan Mozena. By popular demand, we are beginning
with Exodus.
Music
The next concert in Music at Memorial’s “Songs of the Spirit” series is
on Sunday, February 15, at 3:00 in the afternoon. Our own Memorial
Church Staff Singers will present a program entitled “Tasty Treats.”
Sopranos Carol Ambrogio Wood, Sheena Law, mezzo-soprano Diane
Schoff, tenor Michael Fowler, and baritone Kenneth Shepherd offer an
afternoon of treats for the ears and the palate. Enjoy favorite opera arias,
art songs, songs from musical theater, and an afternoon tea in Barbour
Chapel. Due to limited seating, we ask you to reserve a seat in advance,

Outreach
“Little Dresses” for Malawi – This year’s winter project is waiting for
you to pick up in Fellowship Hall on Sunday, Jan. 25, Feb. 1 and Feb.
8 during Middle Hour. These dresses will go to the girls in Chaona Village where a team of seven GPMC members joined others last October to
build classrooms there. Come see us in Fellowship Hall, pick up your dress
kit and join this mission effort. You are also welcome to contact Kathie

(313.886.6158, [email protected]). Our project is called Martha Nyboer Memorial Dresses for Malawi. A donation in memory of Martha
Nyboer, Chair of PW/GPMC Sewing for many years, will fund this effort.

Honduras Donations – Eighteen members and friends of GPMC are
headed to Honduras from February 14-21. Each year, trip members collect
various items to give to the people with whom we are working in the local
village where we serve. Items requested: sewing scissors, thread, embroidery floss, full size bath soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, foot fungus cream,
antibiotic creams (like Neosporin), cooking utensils (new/gently used: hot
pads, serving utensils, mixing spoons, spatuals; not pots and pans), adult
and children’s multi-vitamins. Drop off the items in the collection bins in
the coat room just off the Reception Area. Thank you for helping us share
a sense of God’s love with brothers and sisters in Honduras.
Eastside Take Control Offers Resources and Support for Those in Career Transition – ETC is a team of representatives from 6 Grosse Pointe
area churches who have collaborated to provide a portfolio of resources
for people (church members or not) in job transition in order to equip,

encourage and empower them to move forward. We have experts willing
to offer free services in the areas of resume writing, interviewing skills,
networking, job leads, spirituality, wellness, coaching, accountability,
business start-ups and more. Our Yahoo e-mail distribution group sends
out regular announcements on job openings and networking events. In
addition, on Wednesday mornings a small support group meets in our
Church library at 8:30 a.m, and then at 9:30 a.m. Pastor Ben VanArragon
of First Christian Reformed Church at 1444 Maryland in Grosse Pointe
Park, meets with job seekers in his office for “Digging Deeper” into the
spiritual and emotional aspects of job loss. If you’re an employer with job
opportunities, or a professional with advice or resources to share, please

Constitutional Questions of Officers:
Do you trust in Jesus Christ your Savior, acknowledge him Lord of all and
Head of the Church, and through him believe in one God, Father, Son and
Holy Spirit?
Do you accept the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be, by the
Holy Spirit, the unique and authoritative witness to Jesus Christ in the
Church universal, and God’s Word to you?
Do you sincerely receive and adopt the essential tenets of the Reformed faith as
expressed in the confessions of our church as authentic and reliable expositions
of what Scripture leads us to believe and do, and will you be instructed and
led by those confessions as you lead the people of God?
Will you fulfill your office in obedience to Jesus Christ, under the authority of
Scripture, and be continually guided by our confessions?
Will you be governed by our church’s polity, and will you abide by its discipline?
Will you be a friend among your colleagues in ministry, working with them,
subject to the ordering of God’s Word and Spirit?
Will you in your own life seek to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, love your
neighbors, and work for the reconciliation of the world?
Do you promise to further the peace, unity, and purity of the church?
Will you seek to serve the people with energy, intelligence, imagination, and
love?
to deacons:
Will you be a faithful deacon, teaching charity, urging concern, and directing
the people’s help to the friendless and those in need? In your ministry will you
try to show the love and justice of Jesus Christ?
to elders:
Will you be a faithful elder, watching over the people, providing for their
worship, nurture, and service? Will you share in government and discipline,
serving in governing bodies of the church, and in your ministry will you try to
show the love and justice of Jesus Christ?
