Requirements for SOMC’s Annual
TB Education and Screening Program
In accordance with regulations from OSHA, the CDC, and the Ohio
Department of Health, all SOMC employees must complete annual
TB education and screenings during the month of February.
Hospitals are assigned a risk category based on active TB cases over the year. In 2014, SOMC
had zero active TB cases, while Scioto County only had one active TB case. Due to this low
volume of active TB cases, SOMC has once again been deemed a “low risk” facility.
“Low risk” facilities are not required to perform TB testing on all
employees—only those who meet certain criteria. However, all employees
must complete education during the month of February.
Below are the requirements for the 2015 TB Screening Program:

To be compliant and eligible for a pay increase and annual bonus, all employees
are required to complete the annual TB Education and TB Questionnaire,
which will be available through NetLearning beginning Monday, Jan. 26.
•
SOMC Employee Health and Wellness will evaluate each questionnaire and
contact employees who answered yes to any question on the questionnaire.
•
After consultation, additional testing may be required for those employees.
To allow adequate time for additional testing, employees must complete the TB Questionnaire
before Feb. 22, 2015. If TB testing is required, employees must complete the test by Feb. 28, 2015.
It is each employee’s responsibility to be available for additional testing, should it be required.
We ask that you complete the education and questionnaire as early as possible. If you
have any questions about the program, please contact April Sanders at ext. 8021.

In Memory of Ann Gilley
Ann Gilley, senior claims processor of the SOMC Claims Processing
Department, passed away Jan. 23 in SOMC Hospice. She was 64 years old.
Ann was born May 13 in Gallipolis. She began her 33-year-long career
with Southern Ohio Medical Center in 1981, starting out as a member
of the Registration Department before moving to Claims Processing in
1993. She was also a former board member of Sun and Funland Pool,
as well as a former school board member of New Boston Schools.
Ann is survived by her husband of 40 years, Greg (of SOMC
Transportation); her daughters, Kristie Schomburg and Kellie Madden (of the
SOMC AIC Clinic); her mother, Evelyn; her sisters, Jane, Sharon, and Rita; her
sisters-in-law, Lana Mercer (of the Emergency Department) and Sue Bailey (of
Registration); three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Ann was always a good friend and a very hard worker. She adored her family, daughters and
grandchildren, loved walking and going to lunch with co-workers, and going on vacations.
She was like family to those who worked with her, and will be loved and missed by all.
Funeral services took place Tuesday, Jan. 27 at Melcher Funeral Home in Portsmouth.
Donations can be made to the SOMC Cancer Compassion Fund and SOMC Hospice.
SOMC, Nationwide Partner to Offer
Adult Congenital Cardiology Services
SOMC is partnering with the Heart Center at Nationwide Children’s
Hospital to provide Adult Congenital Cardiology Services for adolescents
and adults that require ongoing specialized cardiovascular care.
The Heart Center Clinic will offer:
• Evaluation of murmurs, chest pain, and syncope
• Follow-up visits for adult congenital cardiac patients
• Medical and surgical evaluations of patients with congenital heart disease
• Pre-pregnancy cardiac examinations and continual
medical care for patients with heart disease
• Care of patients with connective tissue disorders such as Marfan Syndrome
• Pulmonary Hypertension
The clinic is scheduled to take place on Thursday of every other even month (including March
5) in the SOMC Cardiovascular Testing Department on the Main Campus. Appointments
are necessary and can be made through Nationwide Children’s at 614-722-2000.

SOMC Celebrates
Perianesthesia Nurse Week
SOMC will celebrate the dedication and achievements
of its Post Anesthesia Recovery Unit during
Perianesthesia Nurse Awareness Week Feb. 2-8.
Perianesthesia nursing involves the care provided to
patients recovering from anesthesia. It encompasses
several different specialties and skill sets, which are
necessary to serve such a varied patient population.
At SOMC, our PACU nurses provide care for more
than 6,000 patients a year, ranging from pediatric
to geriatric and all levels of acuity. They work closely
with surgeons, and along-side the Surgical and
Anesthesia departments, to ensure that our patients
have the best possible experience post-operatively.
Our nurses are certified in ACLS and PALS, and 33 percent are
certified with ASPAN (the American Society of Perianesthesia
Nurses). Approximately 53 percent of our PACU nurses
have also obtained a bachelor’s of Science in Nursing.
We thank you for the work you do and hope

Elder Abuse In-Service Scheduled for Feb. 10
The SOMC Senior Behavioral Medicine Care Unit will offer an in-service on Elder
Abuse Prevention/Reporting and Elder Financial Exploitation from 1 to 2 p.m. Feb. 10
in Room 4 of the Micklethwaite Education Building on the Main Campus.
The in-service will be presented by Kaye Inoshita, RN, director of Regional Long
Term Care Ombudsman Program for the Area Agency on Aging.
Professionals and community members are welcome to attend.

A NIGHT OF
BROADWAY
A BENEFIT FOR THE SOMC BREAST CANCER COMPASSION FUND
Musical theatre enthusiasts will have the opportunity to enjoy their favorite tunes while
supporting local breast cancer patients during the upcoming production of “A Night of
Broadway,” which will take place at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts
The show is presented by Dr. Vincent Scarpinato, Linda Tieman, and the Portsmouth West
Vocal Department, in association with the SOMC Development Foundation, Shawnee
State University, Bob and Debbie Gambill, and the SOMC Service Guild.
The program will feature vocal selections from both alumni and current Portsmouth West High
School students. All proceeds earned will benefit the SOMC Breast Cancer Compassion Fund.
“A Night of Broadway is a musical celebration that will bring the entire community together to invigorate
hope and help us defeat this terrible disease that affects so many lives,” Dr. Scarpinato, senior medical director
of Surgical Services at SOMC, said. “While there are often many resources for breast cancer patients, there are
also many patients who need help with critical needs; this production will raise money for those people.”
Three ticket types are available for the evening, including $50 VIP Tickets, $25 Patron Tickets,
and $12 Regular Tickets. The purchase of a VIP ticket will include admission to a champagne
reception following the event. Sponsorship opportunities are also available.
