Though, technically, Tim was not wearing an ugly sweater, his festive candy-cane suit more than fit the bill in terms of “ugly” and “holiday-themed.” Congrats, Tim! We hope you showcase your award proudly! IRS Statements for Prescription Costs Preventing Falls In-Service To be HIPAA compliant, beginning Jan. 1, SOMC will host an in-service on “Preventing 2015, the SOMC Outpatient Pharmacy will Falls” from 1 to 2 p.m. Jan. 13 in Room 3 of the require a signature for each patient needing Education Building on the Main Campus. an IRS statement for prescription costs. The year-long challenge, which will focus on gradual, sustainable weight loss, will begin the week of Jan. 12 and run through the end of December 2015. “As we continue our organizational-wide wellness journey, we have decided to make a conscious shift toward supporting programs that provide sustained health and wellness effects for our employees,” April Sanders, manager of Employee Health and Wellness, said. Cost of participation is free to all employees. Registration can be completed beginning Jan. 12 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday in the Employee Health and Wellness Office (Suite 307A of the Waller Building). Night shift registration hours will be offered from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Jan. 13 and 15. Offsite registration will be completed on a scheduled basis. For more information, please call ext. 8432. Sanders explained that, though the SOMC Employee Meltdown has been popular in years past, the challenge places an unwanted emphasis on rapid weight loss over a short period of time with no plan for sustaining results. In reality, people who lose weight gradually and steadily (at about one to two pounds per week) are more successful at keeping weight off. “Year after year, we see returning participants weigh-in for the Meltdown at their beginning weight from the previous year, or even higher; obviously, this is not healthy,” Sanders said. “SOMC’s commitment to wellness is a long-term investment, which is why we want to use ForeverFit to promote a sustainable lifestyle change.” Employees can choose to participate in ForeverFit either individually or as a team. To be eligible for prizes, participants are required to: • Weigh in monthly via an Employee Health and Wellness representative. • Attend a minimum of four education sessions, which will be held once a month throughout the year. The education sessions will cover a variety of wellness topics and participants who attend four education sessions will receive a free T-shirt. • Demonstrate gradual weight loss over the year. (Crash diets cannot be used at year-end to win prizes.) Highlights of the challenge include: • A paid day off will be awarded to the individual with the greatest percentage of weight loss during the first three quarters of the challenge (March, June, September). • At the end of the program, the individual with the most weight loss and the individual with the highest percentage of weight loss will each receive $500. • A FitBit fitness tracker will be awarded to each member of the two winning teams with the most weight loss and to the highest percentage of weight loss. • Participants will also be eligible to receive free personal training sessions, wellness coaching, free consults with SOMC dieticians, and many other benefits. 5 Health & Wellness continued How to Avoid Overeating this Holiday Season No matter what holidays you celebrate this season, there is one thing that’s almost always involved – food, and lots of it. Family feasts are a holiday tradition, and they can make it difficult to maintain healthy eating habits. If you’re not careful, your efforts to shed unwanted weight – or at least avoid putting more on – during the winter months can be undone by a barrage of candy, eggnog and pumpkin pie. Here are some tips to help you avoid over-indulgence: • Don’t arrive to a holiday dinner on an empty stomach! You may think that skipping a meal prior to the feast will allow you to splurge, but it will actually just cause you to overeat and consume more calories than you would have if you’d eaten something beforehand. • Offer to bring a healthy dish. Not only does it keep you from showing up empty-handed, but it makes sure there’s something on the menu you can eat without feeling guilty. • Meltdown Alumni Challenge Winners Congratulations go out to SOMC employees Amanda Dummitt, Cheryl Kantz, and Ruth Jones who lost 78, 74.4 and 31 pounds (respectively) via the 2014 SOMC Meltdown Alumni Challenge. We are so proud of your determination and the results you’ve achieved throughout the year! Each one of your are inspirational and we hope you continue to improve upon and sustain your health-and-wellness journeys in the new year. Avoid excess alcohol, and don’t sit within arm’s length of the snacks. The more you take in before the meal, the less you can consume once the main course is ready. • • Select small portions. It’s all about moderation, so don’t feel like you need to load down your plate. Eat slowly! Take small bites, chew slowly and enjoy the meal. Not only will this help you savor the taste, but it takes about 20 minutes for your brain to realize that you’re full. • Leave the table when you’re finished. If you linger at the table, you’ll be tempted to continue eating even if you’re not hungry. Protecting Yourself and Others from Illness The cold and flu season has arrived, and • Employees with mild respiratory symptoms, SOMC employees are reminded to put such as sniffling and a runny nose, should themselves first when it comes to illness. wear a surgical mask while at work as a courtesy to patients and co-workers.
