SOMC Celebrates Three-Year Partnership
with OhioHealth Stroke Network
Southern Ohio Medical Center recently celebrated the third anniversary of a
unique partnership with the OhioHealth Stroke Network, created to ensure
that our patients are never far away from specialized stroke care.
“We integrated OhioHealth’s advanced telemedicine technology systems into our
Emergency Department in February 2012 to serve as an extra set of eyes and ears to
provide patients with more efficient treatments and better outcomes,” Mary Kate
Dilts-Skaggs, director of SOMC Emergency, Pediatric and Outpatient Services, said.
Dilts-Skaggs explained that by using the two-way video and audio
system, nurses are able to work side-by-side with neurologists from
the OhioHealth Stroke Network to provide the quickest, best care
possible to patients who present with signs of a stroke.
“For stroke patients, minutes can be the difference between a
full recovery and permanent neurological damage,” Dilts-Skaggs
said. “Time is of the essence, and these telemedicine systems
help us limit how long it takes to accurately diagnose strokes.”
Most recently, a patient case that presented to the Emergency Department
had a door to intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) administration
in 44-minutes—a time well under the recommended national guidelines.
“I would like to congratulate the doctors, nurses, case managers, pharmacists, educators,
Cat Scan staff and EMS colleagues who have been working together to improve the stroke
care available to our community,” Dilts-Skaggs said. “This excellent multi-disciplinary team
covers the complete continuum of patient care, from the moment the patient presents
at SOMC or arrives via EMS to post hospitalization. Such impressive results would not
be possible without their dedication and we are all thankful for their efforts.”
Don’t forget! When providing care to stroke patients, it’s important to remember the acronym FAST:
Face (do they have facial droop); Arm (Can they hold their arms straight out); Speech (is their speech
understandable); and Time (time is critical to preserving brain function). Don’t delay: call 9-1-1.
Understanding Wandering with Dementia Patients
SOMC’s Senior Behavior Medicine Care Unit will partner with the Alzheimer’s
Association to offer the in-service, “Understanding Wandering,” from 1 to 2
p.m. March 17 in Room 4 of the Micklethwaite Education Building.
Melissa Dever, LSW, will present the in-service. CEUs for Ohio Social Work and Ohio Nursing
will be available. RSVP is not required. If you have any questions, please call 356-6845.

Organizational News & Updates continued
Requirements for SOMC’s Annual
TB Education and Screening Program
In accordance with regulations from OSHA, the CDC, and the Ohio Department of Health, all SOMC
employees must complete annual TB education and screenings during the month of February.
Hospitals are assigned a risk category based on active TB cases over the year. In 2014, SOMC
had zero active TB cases, while Scioto County only had one active TB case. Due to this low
volume of active TB cases, SOMC has once again been deemed a “low risk” facility.
“Low risk” facilities are not required to perform TB testing on all employees—only those who meet
certain criteria. However, all employees must complete education during the month of February.
Below are the requirements for the 2015 TB Screening Program:
•
To be compliant and eligible for a pay increase and annual bonus, all employees
are required to complete the annual TB Education and TB Questionnaire, which
will be available through NetLearning beginning Monday, Jan. 26.
•
SOMC Employee Health and Wellness will evaluate each questionnaire and contact
employees who answered yes to any question on the questionnaire.
•
After consultation, additional testing may be required for those employees.
In an effort to minimize issues, here are a few tips to help you successfully complete your TB education:
•
Once you open the link to the TB Questionnaire, please be certain to
complete it in its entirety. This should take less than 5 minutes.
•
Once you have completed your questionnaire, be sure to click the “submit” button at the bottom of the page.
•
Once the questionnaire is successfully submitted, you will receive a message
that says, “Great! Thank you for completing your TB Questionnaire”.
To allow adequate time for additional testing, employees must complete the TB Questionnaire
before Feb. 22, 2015. If TB testing is required, employees must complete the test by Feb. 28, 2015. It
is each employee’s responsibility to be available for additional testing, should it be required.
We ask that you complete the education and questionnaire as early as possible. If you have
any questions about the program, please contact April Sanders at ext. 8021.

Team Registration Now Open for Amazing Race!
Fans of “The Amazing Race” will once again have the opportunity to feel the thrill of the competition for
themselves through SOMC’s second annual Amazing Race competition. The event will be held in conjunction
with several local sponsors and is scheduled to take place April 25 at the Portsmouth LIFE Center.
The competition is comprised of a series of events meant to provide both a physical
and mental challenge, while also being fun and entertaining.
Teams will compete against one another for the chance to win up to $2,500. Each team will
start at the SOMC LIFE Center Gym and be routed to their first challenge. Once there, they
must complete a task to move to the next challenge location. After successfully completing
all challenges, teams must report to the SOMC LIFE Center Gym for final scoring.
The Amazing Race is open to participants ages 10 and older, with no more than four people on a team.
The team captain must be 18 or older. One may compete as an individual but may be at a disadvantage
during some of the challenges. Teams are encouraged to get creative with names and costumes.
Once a team has been formed, it has until April 13 to register. Registration is limited to 75 teams and may be
completed at TriStateRacer.com. Cost is $150 per team and all participants will be asked to sign a waiver.
All proceeds from the race will benefit the SOMC Development Foundation Community Health
and Wellness Fund, which supports health and fitness opportunities in our community.
