The Medjugorje Vol. 27, No. 6 Published for the Glory of God Incurable Man W as Healed in Medjugorje Was Star December 2013/January 2014 Reflection on the Message of Our Lady by Fr. Charles Sellars, omi The King of Peace C ristian Felice suffered from ALS, which leads to sure death. But while in Medjugorje on September 26, 2013, he heard a voice tell him to climb Apparition Hill, where he broke into tears. His respirator put away and his feeding tube next, he appears to be the world’s first to recover from ALS. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a killer. Also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, the first patient is yet to survive the neurogenic disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. However, the first patient appears to be Cristian Felice, a 37-year-old father of two from Piane Crati near Cosenza in southern Italy. What appears to be his healing came about on September 26 in Medjugorje. A patient for five years with his lower limbs paralyzed, Re-creating the historical facts be- Cristian Felice’s respirator has been put away and two weeks later his feeding tube was removed, the regional newspaper Gazzetta del Sud reported. Cristian Felice told the regional newspaper, Il Quotidiano della Calabria, that his reflexes have returned to functioning norHealing continued on page 2. Messages of Our Lady of Medjugorje December 25, 2013 November 25, 2013 D ear children! Today I call all of you to prayer. Open the doors of your heart profoundly to prayer, little children, to prayer with the heart; and then the Most High will be able to act upon your freedom and conversion will begin. Your faith will become firm so that you will be able to say with all your heart: ‘My God, my all.’ You will comprehend, little children, that here on earth everything is passing. Thank you for having responded to my call. D ear children! I am carrying to you the King of Peace that He may give you His peace. You, little children, pray, pray, pray. The fruit of prayer will be seen on the faces of the people who have decided for God and His Kingdom. I, with my Son Jesus, bless you all with a blessing of peace. Thank you for having responded to my call. Volume 27, No. 6 December 2013/January 2014 hind Luke’s account of the birth of Jesus is virtually impossible. That was never Luke’s intent nor should it be ours. The point is that Jesus was born into a world that was ruled by Caesar Augustus. In the future, Jesus will contrast this kingdom of Caesar to the kingdom of God. Joseph is depicted as taking Mary, who is pregnant by the Holy Spirit, to the city of David. The census was generally conducted only for the purposes of raising taxes and drafting young men into the military. Here, the purpose is really to make sure Jesus is born in the city of David in order to fulfill his messianic mission. An angel of the Lord informs the shepherds, and us, what has really taken place with the birth of Jesus. This revelation is the high point of the entire passage. Not only has a new infant been brought forth into the kingdom of Caesar, but in reality it is the Messiah and the Lord who has come into the world. Luke is fond of emphasizing throughout his gospel and in the Acts of the Apostles that God reveals the extraordinary in and through the ordinary. Nowhere is that more evident than here in the story of the birth of Jesus, the Messiah, the Lord. The Medjugorje Star Healing continued from page 1. mally and that sensation has returned to his legs and feet. While Cristian Felice’s medical files require further examination, his physical improvement has been attested to by doctors. “On September 26, Cristian heard a voice that drove him to climb Apparition Hill. He ascended the hill with his wife and two priests. They were the ones to see him stand up [from his wheelchair]. They saw him walk to the big statue that marks the exact spot where Our Lady first appeared to the visionaries. There they saw him cry,” Gazzetta del Sud writes. Overwhelmed by what happened, Cristian Felice is not ready to tell his story yet. Church authorities in Cosenza have been informed of his seeming cure, the regional newspaper Il Cirotano reports. On October 5, a prayer vigil of thanksgiving was held in Cristian Felice’s hometown. Applauded by 100 people, he arrived walking along with his wife, with a rosary in his hand. ALS is deadly due to its breaking down the motor neurons between the brain and spinal cord. When the motor neurons die, the brain’s ability to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages may become totally paralyzed. Medjugorje Herald, Vol. 27, No 11, November 2013 Annual Apparition to Jakov Colo December 25, 2013 Italian W oman L ed 140 P ilgrimages Woman Led Pilgrimages Romano Nardin and Fr. Mario F r.Dall’Arche from the archdiocese of Vittorio Veneto in Italy and Mrs. Bruna Calesso, a group leader who came for 140 times to Medjugorje, were guests at the Medjugorje radio station a few months ago. Fr. Romano came to Medjugorje as a spiritual director of a group of pilgrims, and he felt that was one wonderful mission for him: “It is a great grace to come to Medjugorje as a priest because we can witness so many fruits of our faithful. I heard about Medjugorje in 1982 for the first time and came here in 1996. Back then, I also came as a spiritual director, and if I am not mistaken, this must be my thirteenth pilgrimage to the Queen of Peace.” He sees many fruits of the apparitions in Medjugorje in his own parish, and many other parishioners say the same about the faithful in their parishes. “People come to Medjugorje and experience powerful experiences that change them. Many who hardly ever came to Holy Mass, start coming regularly to the church after their visits to Medjugorje. That strong change in their lives is so evident,” said Fr. Romano. Fr. Mario, a priest for 46 years, came to Medjugorje in 1983 or in 1984 for the first time. “We drove on bad roads, there were no signs for Medjugorje and it was very hard to find it, but people came despite that. I was very moved by the simplicity of life in Medjugorje. It was really obvious that people were very devoted in Holy last daily apparition to Jakov Colo A ont theSeptember 12th, 1998, Our Lady told him that henceforth he would have one apparition a year, every December 25th, on Christmas Day. This is also how it was this year. The apparition began at 3:07 pm and lasted 8 minutes. Afterwards Jakov transmitted the message: “Little children, today in a special way, Jesus desires to come to dwell in each of your hearts and to share with you your Volume 27, No. 6 December 2013/January 2014 2 Masses and that they lived that experience that was given to them. I was so impressed by that! Holy Mass every day, people in the village were active and they were coming to the evening prayer program every day. I witnessed many conversions of pilgrims and saw that young people were changing. Young people were especially influenced by the Youth Festival and they were more attracted by that.” Fr. Romano and Fr. Mario came with a few other priests in a group organized by Mrs. Bruna Calesso who has brought pilgrims for years to this shrine of Our Lady. Bruna came in 1983 for Christmas, and that was her first visit. “A priest friend of my family invited me to look at some pictures from Medjugorje. I was so moved by that, so we made our trip in February 1984. We came in two cars, and I was here with my husband and daughters, while our friends were in the other car. It was very cold; the north wind made it even colder. The first person we met was Fr. Slavko Barbaric. He found twelve of us and asked us where we came from, offered us some tea, and took us to the parish office. I came again in two months’ time with my friends, and ever since then I have come here for 140 times! Medjugorje changed my life; I encountered God here. I was Christian before Medjugorje, went to the church, but that was just traditional faith. I met the Lord here, started to know more about Him, to follow Him, and I encountered Gospa as well.” every joy and pain. Therefore, little children, today in a special way, peer into your hearts and ask yourselves if the peace and joy of the birth of Jesus have truly taken hold of your hearts. Little children, do not live in darkness, aspire towards the light and towards God’s salvation. Children, decide for Jesus and give Him your life and your hearts, because only in this way will the Most High be able to work in you and through you.” The Medjugorje Star Gisella Barreto: ““A After coming to Medjugorje, I felt as if my world began to change.” world. I always looked unhappy, and my mom used to tell me to surrender all to God. She was in Medjugorje on three occasions and showed me Our Lady from Medjugorje and told me to thank her for all. It was after that visit to Medjugorje that my life began to change. This is where I understood that it is not enough just to be a good person, but our soul needs to be filled with God. It was through the emptiness in the heart that the world starts to enter within us.” December 18, 2013 A pilgrim from Argentina, Gisella Barreto came to Medjugorje. Gisella is a very famous person in Argentina and in the other countries of Latin America as well. She won several beauty contests, became a TV hostess, and even though she lived in the world of glamour, none of that ever made her happy. She came to Medjugorje in 2010 as a result of her mother’s desire, and that is when her world started to change. She does not work in the media anymore, she does not live in the world of glamour, but she witnesses and teaches religion in schools. She said how only now she feels happy and blessed in her life after so many years. Gisella told us that she came here to thank Gospa in Medjugorje. She said that her mother was always a pillar of faith in their family and that she raised her four children in the faith. She had a beautiful childhood, but it all changed in the time of adolescence. That is when she was attracted to the world with all of its challenges. Gisella was very pretty, and that is when she entered the world of glamour. She won at several contests and was a semi-finalist at the contest for Miss Argentina. “That life was seemingly nice and attractive; it was actually a true trap of the Archbishop John Barwa from India visits Medjugorje Nov 3, 2013 J ohn Barwa, archbishop from Archdiocese Cuttack Bhubaneswar in Odisha, came recently in his first visit to Medjugorje. His archdiocese has 11 million people, and 70,000 are Catholics. He came to Medjugorje in a group of 43 Chinese, and some of them live in America, Canada, Malaysia and Hong Kong. He said how Medjugorje is a place famous in the whole world. “My first impressions are really beautiful. This is a place where Mother Mary is truly present. People here act according to that, with that feeling that Mary is our Mother, and they are prepared to share that experience with other pilgrims. That is why I am really proud of Medjugorje and I am very happy. Confessions here are not superficial, but really profound. As I spent time hearing confessions, I could feel that sincerity, depth, and that is such a powerful experience. That is where we have conversions. Gospa is encouraging us to conversion, confession, and I found all that here. People who did not confess for years were able to do that here, and that is how transformation within them is created,” said Archbishop Barwa in his interview. Volume 27, No. 6 December 2013/January 2014 3 German Pilgrim Travels to Medjugorje by Bicycle Nov. 6, 2013 You’ve probably had a chance to hear many stories of people who arrive to Medjugorje by various means of transport. Surely, one of the most interesting visits took place in the end of October. A German pilgrim, Gerald Dany, who is 49 and lives in Slovakia at the moment, came to Medjugorje by bicycle. He heard about Medjugorje in 1989 for the first time during his visit to Belgium when he met one Catholic family. Then, he went to Medjugorje in 1990. Just twelve days ago, he began his pilgrimage through Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he plans to stay for a few days. He said how he is very connected to Medjugorje and added: “Now I will continue my journey, and I want to go to Rome by bicycle. Most likely I will go to Spain afterwards and visit places of pilgrimage there.” First Anniversary of Fr. Petar Vlasic’s Death O n Friday, November 8, 2013, Medjugorje celebrated the first anniversary of the death of the former Medjugorje parish priest, Fr. Petar Vlasic. Fr. Petar died in his 75th year of life, in his 51st year of priesthood. He served in the various parishes as the parish vicar, the parish priest and the guardian of the monastery. He was the assistant parish priest in Medjugorje from 1999-2007 and finally the parish priest in Medjugorje from August 25, 2007 until the day of his death. He was buried in Kovacica graveyard. www.medjugorje.hr The Medjugorje Star Purgatory: The F orgotten Church Forgotten From an interview by June Klins, The Spirit of Medjugorje, Vol. 26, No 11 I n 1993, John Clote was in his twenties and working in St. Louis. He described himself at the time as a “nominal Catholic.” “I wouldn’t even say I was attending Mass every Sunday without fail,” he said in an interview. Then one day his sister gave him a newsletter about Medjugorje. He read it with interest and suggested to the management at the NBC affiliate where he worked that they do a series on Medjugorje. Although they passed on the idea, John went on to Medjugorje anyway. While in Medjugorje, John did not experience any visions or anything out of the ordinary, but it became a time of deep and special reflection on his faith. “It just kind of galvanized my prayer life,” he said. “It brought me back to re-examining and re-visiting my faith life, my prayer life.” The seed had been planted. Within a year of his return from Medjugorje, John left NBC and began to concentrate on more faith-oriented projects. He founded “The Mercy Foundation” to produce Catholic films and videos. He began to discern the priesthood, but was still dating and caught up in his career. It was not until he was in his thirties that he began to seriously consider the priesthood. In 2008, John became “Friar John” when he was accepted into the Franciscans. In that same year, 2008, when Friar John’s mother died, he began to think more about the afterlife. About three weeks after his mother died, he was in a chapel praying for her when he realized that there are so many souls who have no one to pray for them. He began to think about others he knew who had died. A family friend named Michael George, who died unexpectedly, came to mind. He prayed for him and said, “Michael, if you need a friend, I’ll be happy to pray for you.” Friar John said this experience was a catalyst that led him to talk to priests and other people about their thoughts on Purgatory. He found that many people are unclear about Purgatory and its purposes. After much prayer, Friar John was given permission from his superiors to start a film project about Purgatory. Two years in the making, Purgatory, The Forgotten Church was released in August 2013. June Klins viewed the film and said the film was anything but scary. In fact, she felt the love and mercy of God so deeply that it brought her to tears. The film deals with the four misconceptions about Purgatory, two of which are suicide and fire. You will have to view the film to learn about these and the other two misconceptions. It is offered on page 6. Help us always to heed the Lord’s voice: May we never be indifferent to the cry of the poor, or untouched by the sufferings of the sick and those in need; may we be sensitive to the loneliness of the elderly and the vulnerability of children, and always love and cherish the life of every human being. All-Beautiful Mary By Pope Francis on December 8, 2013, Rome Virgin most holy and immaculate, To you, the honor of our people, and the loving protector of our city, do we turn with loving trust. You are all-beautiful, O Mary! In you is the fullness of joy born of life with God. Help us never to forget the meaning of our earthly journey: May the kindly light of faith illumine our days, the comforting power of hope direct our steps, the contagious warmth of love stir our hearts; and may our gaze be fixed on God, in whom true joy is found. You are all-beautiful, O Mary! In you there is no sin. Awaken in all of us a renewed desire for holiness: May the splendor of truth shine forth in our words, the song of charity resound in our works, purity and chastity abide in our hearts and bodies, and the full beauty of the Gospel be evident in our lives. You are all-beautiful, O Mary! Hear our prayer, graciously hear our plea: May the beauty of God’s merciful love in Jesus abide in our hearts, and may this divine beauty save us, our city and the entire world. Amen. You are all-beautiful, O Mary! In you the Word of God became flesh. Volume 27, No. 6 December 2013/January 2014 When he went back to his office and checked his email, the only email that came up read, “Michael George would like to know if you will be his friend.” Friar John almost fell off his chair! It turns out that the email was sent by a yearbook company and somehow he was given the name of Michael George, but the Michael George he knew had died years before. 4 The Medjugorje Star _____ The Joy of the Gospel (Evangelii Gaudium) $14.00 by Pope Francis - - Apostolic Exhortation _____ Miracles Do Happen by Sr. Briege Mc Kenna _____ The Power of the Sacraments by Sr. Briege McKenna $10.00 _____ Through The Year with Pope Francis (Daily reflections for 365 days) _____ St. Michael 8” resin statue, in color (#60694) pictured $20.00 _____ Moments with God (turn waiting into praying) by Jacquelyn Graham $11.00 _____ Bronze coated 10” St. Michael statue (#8197) $55.00 _____ Nothing Short of a Miracle by Patricia Treece $20.00 (God’s Healing Power in Modern Saints) _____ St. Michael the Archangel devotions & prayers $4.00 _____ _____ Deathbed Conversions by Karen Edmisten (13 stories of remarkable conversions) Praying the Rosary with Our Lady of Medjugorje $20.00 (Messages of Our Lady between each Hail Mary on CD) _____ The Ear of the Heart by Mother Dolores Hart $25.00 (Actress’ Journey from Hollywood to Holy Vows) _____ Ten Secrets of the Blessed Virgin Mary (How to prepare for their warnings) $13.00 _____ A Conversation with the Visionaries _____ Heralds of the Second Coming by S.
