We want to follow our own way and lead lives of relative comfort and security. Move us out of our comfort zone to a place of compassion and empathy. Move us away from our own fears so that we can work into the ways of justice for all. Call us into your ministry of love, restoration, justice and peace. In the name of Jesus the Christ we pray. Amen. (Silent prayer and private confession) KYRIE Hymnal, 551 THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON Hymnal, 587 *THE PASSING OF THE PEACE One: The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. All: And also with you. A TIME WITH CHILDREN Sally Heinz The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Sermon Julie Bailey Westminster Shorter Catechism (1647) Heidelberg Catechism (1563) One: What is the chief end of humankind? All: To glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever. One: What is your only comfort, in life and in death? All: That I belong – body and soul, in life and in death – not to myself but to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ, who at the cost of his own blood has fully paid for all my sins and has completely freed me from the dominion of the devil; that he protects me so well that without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, that everything must fit his purpose for my salvation. Therefore, by his Holy Spirit, he also assures me of eternal life, and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH *HYMN 721, “Lord, You Have Come to the Lakeshore” PESCADOR DE HOMBRES PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER OFFERING Lord, have mercy. Sometimes I feel discouraged, and think my work’s in vain, But then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again. There is a balm in Gilead, to make the wounded whole, There is a balm in Gilead, to heal the sin-sick soul. If you cannot sing like angels, if you cannot preach like Paul, You can tell the love of Jesus, and say “He died for all.” There is a balm in Gilead, to make the wounded whole, There is a balm in Gilead, to heal the sin-sick soul.
