Volume 5, Issue 12 December 2013 Genesis United Methodist Church GENESIS CONNECTION PAGE 2 GENESIS Pastor’s Message “All In” Sunday ALL IN! As disciples of Jesus Christ and as members of Genesis! What a joy it is to be in worship with our church family! On Sunday, November 17th, over 550 members and friends gathered to praise God, to witness to their faith, and to commit to the mission and ministries of Genesis United Methodist Church. It was great to have both 10:30 worshipping congregations together in the sanctuary. I am grateful for Bert and Mickey Franks’ willingness to share why they are invested in the ministries at Genesis and why they give. We were blessed by incredible music featuring the gifts of Hye, our Chancel Choir, and the band and singers who make the music in our Fusion service so engaging. We extend our thanks to Becky White and her team for their work in making the delicious Thanksgiving meal. It was great to see our Great Room almost filled to capacity! And of course, there was Mike Young… I have been blessed to serve on a staff with the Rev. Dr. Mike Young these past 4 years. The combination of his gifts and humility are unparalleled in our vocation. He delivered an inspiring sermon, one we will all remember. To honor Mike’s ministry at Genesis, the Staff-Parish Relations committee will be putting together a memory book comprised of notes and cards from members and friends of our church. We will deliver the book to him early in January. There will be a box at the welcome desk in the commons to place your notes in or you can put them in the Staff-Parish mailbox in the church office during the week. I am pleased to share with you the early returns from the 2014 “All In” stewardship campaign. As of Monday, November 18th, 165 commitment cards have been received with pledges totaling $638,406. 135 of these pledges were from those who made commitments last year and there are 30 new pledges. That’s a very good start. There are still 60 individuals/families who pledged in 2013 and others who have joined this year who have not turned in their commitment cards for 2014. I am encouraged by the early stewardship returns, but this is not a time to be complacent. We need the remaining pledges to reflect the same level of sacrificial giving as the ones already received. We also need new commitments from those who have not pledged in the past. Please continue to pray for the church and how you can invest yourself and your resources in the ministries at Genesis. Thank you one and all for your faithful giving. Even as we celebrate the early success of our “All-In” campaign, we remember there is still work to be done in 2013. We need a strong December to help us finish faithfully; we will need to receive about 140,000 to meet all our commitments. Reaching our goals will require each of us who have made commitments for this year to pay them in full and for others to give beyond the commitments that they made. I remain thankful for the privilege of serving with you at Genesis United Methodist Church. Jim VOLUME 5, ISSUE 12 PAGE 3 The gift of generosity This holiday season, we thank everyone who has supported Genesis UMC this past year with their time, talent and financial contributions and look forward to support from all of our members in the year ahead. Children’s Choir will Continue to meet on Sunday mornings at 9:00. PAGE 7 GENESIS Rudolph and Olive The game show contestant was set to come back the next day for more cash and prizes. All he had to do was correctly answer one question. “To be today’s champion,” the smiling host intoned, “name two of Santa’s reindeer.” The contestant, a man in his early thirties, gave a sigh of relief, gratified that he had drawn such an easy question. “Rudolph!” he announced, “and Olive!” The studio audience started mumbling, and the confused host replied, “Yes, we’ll accept Rudolph, but can you explain Olive?” The man gestured impatiently, “You know, Rudolph—the Red Nosed Reindeer—had a very shiny nose. And if you ever saw it, you would even say it glowed. Olive, the other reindeer . . .” This time of year it is easy to become consumed by the commercialism and stress that is prevalent around us during the holidays. We have a hard time keeping a focus on the true meaning and the real story of Christmas. We spend so much energy on unimportant elements of Christmas that we feel a sense of relief when it is over instead of the incredible joy that is at the core of Christmas. As you work this year to Make Christmas Matter, think of ways that you can enjoy the spirit of Christmas. What do you love about the season: the music, the food, the lights, the decorations, etc? Spend more time doing and experience those things that bring you joy. Also, think of what you need to give up this year in order to avoid the trap of a secular Christmas. This is a special time of the year, don’t miss the point, discover what matters and enjoy the true meaning of this holy season. December Schedule Dec. 1 - Pawn Stars Dec. 8 - Mythbusters Dec. 15 - Tacky Sweater/Christmas Wednesday Bible Study Join us Wednesdays as we use the great movie “Christmas with the Kranks” as a way to discuss the holiday season. Stockings for The Salvation Army The United Methodist Women sponsored the collection of Christmas Stockings for the children at the Salvation Army. With the generosity and caring hearts of the Genesis congregation, 116 were provided this year. Thank you! PAGE 9 GENESIS VIBRANT VIGIL: PRAYING FOR OUR PASTORS Prayer Team invites you to join us in a Vibrant Vigil of Prayer, covering our pastors and leaders with prayer during Advent. Our pastors are faithful to their calling to live and preach the Good News of Christ among us, but during this season, the extra services and celebrations must stretch their energy and time. So let’s pray for them. Consider using the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi below. You may want to read a verse, then use it to lift up one of our pastors and leaders: Dr. Jim Conner, Ginger Watson, Todd Treat, Troy Chapman, and Jennifer Trevino. Our Father, each day is a little life, each night a tiny death; help us to live with faith and hope and love. Lift our duty above drudgery; let not our strength fail, or the vision fade, in the heat and burden of the day. O God, make us patient and pitiful one with another in the fret and jar of life, remembering that each fights a hard fight and walks a lonely way. Forgive us, Lord, if we hurt our fellow souls; teach us a gentler tone, a sweeter charity of words, and a more healing touch. Sustain us, O God, when we must face sorrow; give us courage for the day and hope for the morrow. Day unto day may we lay hold of thy hand and look up into thy face, whatever befall, until our work is finished and the day is done. Amen. VOLUME 5, ISSUE 12 PAGE 10 FINANCIAL PEACE UNIVERSITY AT GENESIS BEGINS JAN. 12TH! We all need a plan for our money. Financial Peace University (FPU) is that plan! It teaches God's ways of handling money. Through video teaching, class discussions and interactive small group activities, FPU presents practical steps to get from where you are to where you've dreamed you could be. This plan will show you how to get rid of debt, manage your money, spend and save wisely, and much more! Whether you are young, old, married, single, new parents, college students, working, between jobs, or retired, FPU is designed for you! This is not some stuffy economics class! Each lesson is broken down into simple “baby steps” to help you get started. In just nine lessons, you’ll learn to take control of your money, invest for the future, avoid having “too much month left at the end of the money”, and give like never before. Don’t worry! You won’t be asked to share any personal financial information during the classes. FPU classes meet for around an hour and a half each week for nine weeks. We will have special preview sessions on January 5 and 8, 2014. The class begins on January 12th. You may register for the Genesis UMC classes online by going to daveramsey.com/fpu. Do children think deeply at all? Perhaps children are our deepest thinkers. They take in the world around them, fully alive in the moment, and absorb what they see, hear and feel. To share Christmas with a child is to remember the brilliance of the star, the ruggedness of the stable and the innocence of the Lamb. While our consumer culture has distorted the meaning of Christmas, we can make a choice to instead consume the message, and to share that Message with our children. Love. Every child understands it. Every one of us knows it when we see it in action. Be love. Be Christmas. The books shown here are wonderful new additions to our Commons Library. Stop by to enjoy one, or check one out to share with a child in your life. A Church Cookbook! It has been over 10 years since Genesis last assembled a church cookbook. It’s time to create a new one, and the process is starting now! As you prepare your holiday favorites, consider sending those and other special recipes on to me, along with the story of where they came from or what makes them special to you. In addition, we would like to capture some of the ways this church uses food to further our mission. Our members serve food for Room in the Inn, mission trips, Wednesday night meals, senior fellowship lunches and we bring food to the sick or bereaved. We also, as a church, share some amazing potlucks. Let’s capture these special recipes and also the stories about what the food means to us as the giver or receiver. Information will be available in January about a brainstorming session, so that we can set a deadline and I can glean your ideas and preferences. If you would like to contribute a recipe or story now, or help with the project, please contact me at [email protected] or give me a call at 817-253-3038. Thank you! Keith VOLUME 5, ISSUE 12 PAGE 13 HEALTH MATTERS DECEMBER 2013 LORETTA MAHAFFEY RN Cor. 6:19 ----“your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit”---As we move into December and the winter months, you may notice that the amount of daylight dwindles, culminating in the shortest day of the year around Dec. 21, called the winter solstice. For 10 to 20 percent of Americans, the shorter days result in symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder, commonly known as S.A.D. It occurs the same time every year and is more common in women and affects those in the northern parts of the country more often. In some people, the inability of the retina to absorb light from the shorter winter days is the cause. It is also more common among those who have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalogy. In others, the hormone, Melatonin, which is secreted from the pineal gland in the brain, is the cause. Melatonin induces sleep. It peaks normally in the middle of the night. In people with S.A.D, melatonin levels remain high during the day. Whatever the cause, S.A.D. results in the following symptoms: Sleeping too much Daytime fatigue Carb cravings Weight gain Loss of sexual desire Feeling of hopelessness Suicidal thoughts Social withdrawal Treatment The most common treatment is light therapy. Either spend some time each morning outside in the sun or spend 30 minutes to two hours in front of a light box, eyes open. Symptoms are relieved within two weeks, but must continue all winter long. Melatonin supplements are controversial, but can be taken before bedtime to restore the normal cycle of waking earlier in the morning. What used to be called the winter “blahs” can now be identified as a treatable disease. If you or someone you know has any of these symptoms, consult a physician for treatment. Resource: National Alliance on Mental Illness Toys for Orphans Today, there are over 100 million orphans worldwide. The number is overwhelming and while we may not be able to solve the issue, we can bring a little joy to those children. We are collecting unopened kid’s meal toys from restaurants to send to orphanages around the world. Please consider donating these toys and placing them in the container in the Commons. Together, we might be able to bring a little happiness to kids in need. This is truly a time of incredible fellowship, fun and food! Genesis United Methodist Church 7635 South Hulen Street Fort Worth, Texas 76133-7477 NON-Profit ORG. U.S. Postage PAID Fort Worth, Texas Permit No. 1890 Address Service Requested Our Very Special Chrismon Tree Chrismons are Christmas tree decorations used in many churches across the United States. They are always gold and white, and are decorated elaborately with items such as beads, ribbon and pearls. Most are Christian symbols representing biblical and theological ideas familiar to Christian believers. Most of the symbols have been used by Christians for centuries to represent characteristics of Jesus Christ and the sovereignty of God. At Genesis UMC, these symbols are found in many areas – in the stained glass windows in the chapel, the sanctuary, the prayer chapel and in our crosses throughout and atop the building. The idea of using Christian symbols as tree decorations was the brainchild of Mrs. Frances Spencer, who in 1957, started the custom in her church, Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville, Virginia. She coined the name Chrismon for such decorations from the words CHRISt’s MONogram. It has long been a tradition at Genesis to adorn a tree with these Christian symbols. During this year, a number of our members have created ornate new additions to our collection. Charlotte Sassman has coordinated the effort and has produced a beautiful memory book that identifies the crafters and describes the meaning of each of the symbols. This year, our Chrismon tree will stand in our Commons area throughout the season. Please take time to appreciate the artistry of our crafters, and to reflect on the meaning of these very special symbols of our faith.
