Call to Worship A God worthy of our worship calls us to gather and hear the good news of the gospel, and he invites us to respond in love, honor, and praise for Him. Psalm 63:1-5 O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. 2 So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. 3 Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. 4 So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands. 63:1 My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips, 5 Sunday School and Adult Teaching Fellowships Join us on Sunday mornings from 9:15-10:15 am. Prayer of Invocation We pray celebrating God’s promise to bless us with his presence as we worship him. Worship in Song We sing here as a response to our Father and King. Having heard the good news of Jesus, we are moved to respond by singing praise to our God. By faith we see the hand of God In the light of creation’s grand design In the lives of those who prove His faithfulness Who walk by faith and not by sight By faith our fathers roamed the earth With the power of His promise in their hearts Of a holy city built by God’s own hand A place where peace and justice reign By Faith break the chains of sin and death And rise triumphant from the grave By faith the church was called to go In the power of the Spirit to the lost To deliver captives and to preach good news In every corner of the earth We will stand... We will stand as children of the promise We will fix our eyes on Him our soul’s reward Till the race is finished and the work is done We’ll walk by faith and not by sight By faith this mountain shall be moved And the power of the gospel shall prevail For we know in Christ all things are possible For all who call upon His name By faith the prophets saw a day When the longed-for Messiah would appear With the power to We will stand... Words and Music by Keith & Kristyn Getty & Stuart Townend Copyright 2011 Page 4Sunday, February 8, 2015 Confessing Our Faith All My Days (Beautiful Savior) All my days I will sing this song of gladness, Give my praise to the Fountain of delights; For in my helplessness You heard my cry, And waves of mercy poured down on my life. I will trust in the cross of my Redeemer, I will sing of the blood that never fails; Of sins forgiven, of conscience cleansed, Of death defeated and life without end. Wallace Presbyterian ChurchPage 5 We join our voices in confession to God, to each other, and to a watching world what it is we believe to be true. Star of the Morning, glorious in holiness, You’re the Risen One, heaven’s Champion, And You reign, You reign over all! Question: What is your only comfort, in life and in death? I long to be where the praise is never-ending, Yearn to dwell where the glory never fades; Where countless worshippers will share one song, And cries of ‘worthy’ will honour the Lamb! Answer: That I belong – body and soul, in life and in death – not to myself but to my faithful Savior, Christ Jesus, who at the cost of his own blood has fully paid for all my sins and has completely freed me from the dominion of the devil; that he protects me so well that without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, that everything must fit his purpose for my salvation. Therefore, by his Holy Spirit, he also assures me of eternal life, and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him. Heidelburg Catechism, Question 1 Morning Prayer God invites his people be a part of his working in the world as they pray to him. We intercede on behalf of each other and our community, presenting our requests to God, and looking forward with expectant hearts to how he will answer in his time and in his way. Giving Our Gifts to the Lord All we are and all we have comes from God. We acknowledge God’s goodness in his provision for us by returning to him a portion of what he has given to us. The Word of God The Bible is the very word of God, and through it God continues to speak to his people. Ruling Elder Don Frank The Gospel Reading Luke 9:12-17 Now the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, “Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.” 13 But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” 14 For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 And they did so, and had them all sit down. 16 And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing over them. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17 And they all ate and were satisfied. And what was left over was picked up, twelve baskets of broken pieces. 12 The New Testament Reading James 1:16-18 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. Musical Offering More Love to Thee, O Christ ~~ E. Prentiss and G. Martin The Wallace Choir Under the Direction of Dr. Lawrence Ink More love to Thee, O Christ, more love to Thee! Hear thou the prayer I make on bended knee. This is my earnest plea: more love, O Christ, to Thee, more love to Thee, more love to Thee. Then with my final breath singing Thy praise; this be the glorious cry my heart shall raise. This still its song shall be: more love, O Christ, to Thee, more love to Thee, more love to Thee. Once earthly joys I craved, sought peace and rest; now Thee alone I seek, give what is best. This all my prayer shall be: more love, O Christ, to Thee, more love to Thee, more love to Thee! Preparing to Hear God’s Word 2006 Lorenz Publishing Company For persons who desire, children 3rd grade and under may be dismissed to Bible class during the last verse of this hymn. Father, I Know That All My Life -- Hymnal #559 Page 6Sunday, February 8, 2015 Scripture 1 Kings 17:7-16 Then the word of the Lord came to him, 9 “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you.” 10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, “Bring me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.” 11 And as she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, “Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.” 12 And she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. And now I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die.” 13 And Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you have said. But first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterward make something for yourself and your son. 14 For thus says the Lord the God of Israel, ‘The jar of flour shall not be spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the earth.’” 15 And she went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days. 16 The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah. Wallace Presbyterian ChurchPage 7 Hymn of Preparation for the Lord’s Supper At the Lamb’s High Feast We Sing -- Hymnal #420 8 The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper God invites his people to come, taste and touch the gospel. The bread and the wine represent the body and blood of Jesus, who died on the cross for sinners. At this table, God feeds his people to strengthen their faith, remind them of their hope, and spur them on to love and good works. We invite all who repent of their sins, trust in Christ alone for salvation and have been admitted to a church that preaches the Gospel to join us at the Lord’s Table. Please hold the elements (the bread and the cup) so we may partake together. Sermon God speaks to us through the pastor as he faithfully expounds what the Bible says and how it applies to our lives. “The Gospel According to Elijah” Scott Bridges Proposition: Because, ultimately, God alone is dependable, we must cast our cares upon Him, trusting that He cares for us. Main Point 1: Why Zarephath? The Distribution of the Bread and the Cup There are gluten-free wafers in the center of each communion bread tray. As instituted by our Lord, wine is the element used in the Lord’s Supper to show forth his blood shed on our behalf. (Mark 13:23-25; I Corinthians 10:16; 11:21-22; I Timothy 4:2-3). If, for reasons of conscience or health, you do not wish to participate using wine, we encourage you to use the grape juice which is provided for you in the grape colored cups in the center of the communion tray. Parting Hymn Main Point 2: Why a Widow? And Can It Be, That I Should Gain -- Hymnal #455 Benediction Just as God had the first word in our worship, he also gets the last word as he sends us out to our homes, work, family, and relationships with his blessing. God blesses us as his children, to live as sons and daughters of the great King, and as brothers and sisters of Christ, and therefore, of one another. Main Point 3: Why a Miracle?
