FEBRUARY 2015!
Worship Schedule
Finding the ‘Super Hero’ In You and Making a
Difference
How often we view world events and ask
ourselves: “How can I truly influence a cause
or issue which I care about deeply? How
can my voice really be heard in a way that I
know I am truly making a difference?” These
thoughts are especially true when we view
events in Israel and wonder, as an American
Jew, what role can I play in securing religious
equality, women’s rights, gender equality and
lasting peace and security in the region?

Kabbalat Shabbat Worship
A unique, if not historic opportunity,
awaits all of us to have our voices heard
in the coming months on these and many
other critical issues. Our voice can truly
be heard through the upcoming elections of the World Zionist Congress
and our support of ARZA, the Association of Reform Zionists of America,
which supports the building of an inclusive, democratic Israeli society.
Upon reading these words and until the close of the elections on April 30,
2015, every American Jew over the age of 18 has the opportunity to vote and
support the values of our movement, of egalitarian expression and religious
pluralism within the State of Israel. The elections of the World Zionist
Organization, and our vote for ARZA representatives is also our statement of
solidarity with these principles that we cherish and hold dear.
I would like to take this opportunity to strongly encourage your participation
in this important process. In conjunction with elections in Israel in March

Attention B’nei Mitzvah Families
If Your Child Will Soon
Become A Bar Or Bat Mitzvah
Please don’t forget to submit a photo for the
ChaiLites at least three (3) months prior to your
ceremony. Drop off, mail or email a clear photo
of your child with his/her name and date of their
service on the back.
If sending a jpg, please put the child’s name and
date of the service in the subject line and email
it to [email protected]. Also, please
return the B’nei Mitzvah form so we know how
you would like your name(s) listed on the B’nei
Mitzvah page and all other publicity.
Please contact Deborah Greenswag to schedule
your pre B’nei Mitzvah photos 3 months prior to
your mitzvah. She can be reached at 847-537-1771

Temple Chai Funeral Plan
As a benefit of your membership at Temple Chai,
we are pleased to make available to you and your
family a discounted funeral program at three
different local funeral providers, all of whom enjoy
a close working relationship with our congregation.
Upon the loss of a loved one, please call the temple
office. If during non-business hours, please listen
to the phone prompts to be connected to someone
who can provide immediate support, and start to
help with your arrangements.
Funerals may be held in our sanctuary (calendar
permitting), at the funeral home chapel, or
graveside at the cemetery.

Making a Difference, cont’d
From the President
2015, your voice of solidarity and support with our movement and
ARZA could not be more important than now at this critical time
in history, where in many ways the “soul of Israel,” I believe, is at
stake!
You may participate and cast your ARZA vote in several ways.
First, you may go online to reformjews4israel.org to find out
more information about the World Zionist Congress and ARZA
and to cast your vote. Also, there will be several opportunities at
Temple Chai over the next several months not only to express your
solidarity, but to cast your vote at computers that will be available at
these upcoming programs:
Sunday, February 8th 9:30 a.m.
Be a Real Life Super Hero
The mission of AIPAC is to strengthen, protect and promote the U.S.
- Israel relationship in ways that enhance the security of Israel and
the United States. This program will deepen our understanding of the
bonds that united our two countries.

Beneath the Helmet
From high school to the home front, Beneath the Helmet is a film
about the coming of age of five young, brave Israeli high school
graduates who are drafted into the army to defend their country. At
the age of 18, away from their houses, family, and friends these young
individuals undergo a demanding, inspiring journey, revealing the
core of who they are, who they want to be, and why they were chosen
to be the protectors of a nation.
Let your voice be heard…..express your solidarity…. stand up for
the principles of our movement…be a real life super hero!!!

Saving our Neshama
We have talked a lot about our
new Mission Statement this year.
Two of the key components of this
statement are the sentences:
We embrace lifelong learning
for every age offering engaging
relevant opportunities to explore
Jewish teachings through each
person’s unique lens.
Through acts of loving kindness,
we instill a framework of Judaic
values for how we both view and
interact with the world.
These two sentences are an essential part of who we are and what
we set out to accomplish as a congregation and community. January
1st was the start of the
new secular year, a time
we often make resolutions
for the coming year. Did
you make any resolutions
about furthering your
neshama? There are so
many ways temple can
help and engage you in this
including Sunday School for
Grownups, special programs by our Sisterhood and Brotherhood,
and our regular Shabbat services, just to name a few. We had record
turnouts for our Sunday school programs this fall, with more
excellent offerings this year.
“Did you make any
resolutions about
furthering your neshama?
There are so many ways
temple can help...”
We also have ways for you to help others grow and learn. In the
coming weeks you will receive a letter from me asking you to
donate to our Pikuach Nefesh Fund. This fund was developed
six years ago and is used to help families who cannot afford our
Religious School fees. These families are very grateful for the help
they receive through your generosity.
How appropriate that Pikuach Nefesh translates to Saving our Soul.
We are truly nourishing our souls by contributing to this fund. We
are nourishing our souls by participating in temple programs and
attending services. And we are nourishing our souls by performing
acts of loving kindness to others in the community such as the
Interfaith Coalition and helping with PADS and local food pantries,
to name a few examples. Please continue to Nourish your Soul and
help those in need. Thank you for your continued support.
B’Shalom v’tikvah,
Laurie Azriel-Prager

Honor a Loved one for
Tu Bish’vat on February 4th
Securing our Homeland with the planting of
trees was literally the roots that determined the
establishment of the State of Israel.
JNF has evolved into a global environmental
leader by planting more than 250 million trees,
building over 240 reservoirs and dams, developing
over 250,000 acres of land, creating more than
2,000 parks, providing the infrastructure for over
1,000 communities, and connecting thousands
of children and young adults to Israel and their
heritage.
Modern-day Jews celebrate Tu BiSh’vat by
expressing joy and thankfulness for trees, harvests,
and the natural world. Many Jews plant trees at
home and in Israel, and eat delicious fruits and
greens in celebration of this “New Year of the
Trees.”
WITHOUT THE TREES THERE WOULD BE
NO ISRAEL!
