A Message from Fr Ken Hallahan...
Dear Parishioners,
Francis of Assisi came to Brooklyn, NY!!
Well, actually, he did not come in person, since he died
in 1226. However, some documents from the Popes who knew
him, as well as some writings of his followers and historians did
come to Brooklyn, NY from December 17, 2014 until January 14,
2015.
The documents were on display at the United Nations in
November, but in Dec-Jan they were displayed in the Borough
Hall in Brooklyn, the site of the local city government which is
located just across the street from Franciscan University.
The organizers agreed to display the documents in the
Borough Hall because the neighborhoods in Brooklyn represent
so much of what St. Francis loved and embraced - the diversity of
cultures and the openness to other religions (Brooklyn is a borough of ethnic neighborhoods, including about 20% Muslims).
The exhibit, entitled "Frate Francesco - Friar Francis: traces, words, images."
It include four individual, one-page documents and 11
books. Three of the one-page documents were communications
from two Popes.
The oldest document was dated 1220. It was a permission from Pope Honorius III to Francis and his Order to pray the
Divine Office (now known as the Breviary), in public. They were
allowed to pray in the church, but they were to do so, "without
making much noise" or attracting attention to themselves.
The Pope probably had some reservations about this
relatively recent Order of brothers and priests, and he wasn't sure
that he wanted them to grow and flourish.
Francis had the attitude of a mystic who was open to the
God who is present in nature (no absolute need for a church!!), to
the God who was present in the poor (thus challenging all economic systems) and to the God who is present in the people of
other religions (thus, Francis's trip to speak to the Muslims during
a cease fire in one of the Crusades!!).
Francis' attitudes were those of Jesus, but such attitudes
do not always find favor with the people who hold power in any
institutions, including religious ones.
There was another document from the succeeding
Pope, Gregory IX allowing the Franciscans to name a church after
the recently-deceased founder.
There were actually two copies of this document at the
exhibit - the original written in the hand of the pope or his secretary, the second, the formal written document that was actually
sent to the Order. The formal copy, of course, was also written
by hand, but with the calligraphy of the professional scribe. The
printing press had not yet been invented.
The books were prayer books used by the early Franciscans, a bible, several biographies and histories written within a
Our Lady of Hope Parish - 506
century or so of Francis' death.
The calligraphy in the books was beautiful. There were
several styles of writing and the dedication to detail of the individuals who produced these books was evident. For a person like
myself, who never learned well the Palmer Method of penmanship, the beauty and consistency of these handwritten documents
was very impressive.
The majority of the writing was in black ink, but the blues
and reds used at the beginning of chapters, or to highlight certain
passages, were still bold enough to catch the reader's attention.
There was even one book with green illustrations and
two with brilliant gold leaf.
One humorous item showed up on one of the books. It
was a history book with a chapter about Francis. All of these
books, except one, were in Latin. The exception was a book written in the Tuscan language, a precursor to the modern Italian.
The one book was open to a page that had some writing
at the top of the page and in the side margins that was clearly not
the hand of the original calligrapher. The ink was different and
the script was at least a century later.
The first note at the top of the page said: "Error en hoc
opus" ("There is an error in this work"). It went on to point out that
the error was the year of the reign of Innocent III. The book mentions the XIIII year of the reign of Innocent III as 1207. But, the
note says, Innocent was elected in January of 1198 and enthroned in February of 1198. Therefore, 1207 was the ninth, not
the fourteenth year of his reign.
"So I changed the date" the note continues, "by imposing
a V over the X to make it VIIII rather than XIIII" (normally, the Latin
numeration would be XIV for 14 and IX for 9, but, occasionally,
writers used four I's for the four ones).
I had to laugh at the perfectionist who was writing all
kinds of notes in the margins to correct the errors of earlier writers
and historians. This is part of the Catholic Church tradition, too, to
relearn the past and to adjust our understanding of it.
The experience of seeing this books, and even being
able to turn the pages in one of them, made me appreciate the
long history of sanctity, scholarship and art in the Catholic tradition.
The interest in the life of St. Francis obviously led many
people to follow him, to write about him, to depict him in art
(Giotto's famous frescoes in the church in Assisi come to
mind). Historians have written countless books about him and the
present Pope even selected his name as a signal as to the kind of
Pope he would like to be.

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus tells us that whenever
we feed the least of our brothers and sisters, we feed
Jesus himself. At this time of the year, many food pantries find themselves with empty shelves while the requests for food are still great.
In response, the Diocese of Camden is organizing its
second annual faithFULL Food Drive. On Sunday,
March 1, every parish and school in the diocese will be
asked to bring food donations to area food banks. For
more information, contact your faith community’s food
