Frankfort Business A publication of the Frankfort Chamber of Commerce “When you plan your week, make it a point to schedule time with your family and friends, and activities that help you recharge. Doing hobbies, traveling etc...” February 2015 Work-Life Balance Work-Life Balance is the idea that a person’s life outside of work is just as important as their working life and that the time a person spends working should be balanced by time spent doing things such as spending time with friends and family, keeping fit, doing hobbies, traveling etc. On the plus side of work-life balance, the idea of work-life balance does bring attention to the fact that being a workaholic slave is detrimental to a person’s physical and mental well-being; socializing, physical activity, and being with friends and family are all activities that contribute to being healthier and happier. On the minus side of work-life balance is the assumption that work is some sort of drudgery and that the more you do of it, the worse off you will be (except, perhaps, financially). This whole 19th century sweatshop idea of work being debilitating, grueling and soul-destroying really shortchanges the positive aspects of work, such as the satisfaction one derives from achieving goals, creating things and exercising one’s brain and/or intellect to solve challenges. Work-Life Balance for Small Business Owners. The positive aspects of work are one of the great things about running your own small business; you get to do these things, sometimes on a daily basis. Therefore, you may be particularly prone to spending too much time on the work side of the teeter-totter and letting your work life interfere with your family/personal life to the detriment of your personal relationships. You need to guard against this by making sure that you are giving your family and friends the time and attention they need and by looking after yourself. 5 Tips for Better Work-Life Balance Beat burnout by making more time for the activities and people that matter most to you. Build downtime into your schedule. When you plan your week, make it a point to schedule time with your family and friends, and activities that help you recharge. 2. Drop activities that sap your time or energy. “Many people waste their time on activities or people that add no value -- for example, spending too much time at work with a colleague who is constantly venting and gossiping. Take stock of activities that don’t enhance your career or personal life, and minimize the time you spend on them. 3. Rethink your errands. Consider whether you can outsource any of your time-consuming household chores or errands. Hire a kid down the street to mow your lawn? Order your stamps online so you don’t have to go to the post office? Even if you’re on a tight budget, you may discover that the time you’ll save will make it worth it. 4. Get moving. It’s hard to make time for exercise when you have a jam-packed schedule, but it may ultimately help you get more done by boosting your energy level and ability to concentrate. 5. R emember that a little relaxation goes a long way. Don’t assume that you need to make big changes to bring more balance to your life. Set realistic goals, like leaving the office earlier 1 night per week. Slowly build more activities into your schedule that are important to you! Even during a hectic day, you can take 10 or 15 minutes to do something that will recharge your batteries. Take a bath, read a trashy novel, go for a walk, or listen to music. You have to make a little time for the things that ignite your joy. http://www.webmd.com/health-insurance/protect-health-13/balance-life?page=3 http://sbinfpcanada/about.com/od/worklifebance/g/Work-Lie-Balance.htm FRANKFORT Chamber of Commerce 2015 Board of Directors Thomas Powers – President SAFETY MEETING OUTLINES, INC. 815.464.0200 [email protected] Thomas Kara – Internal Vice President DANCING MARLIN 815.919.5996 [email protected] Mark Giovanazzi – External Vice President MORGAN STANLEY WEALTH MANAGEMENT 708.226.5419 [email protected] Judy Hageman – Treasurer SILVER CROSS FOUNDATION 815.469.5559 [email protected] Steve Hogan – Secretary STUMM INSURANCE LLC 773.862.7761 EXT 109 [email protected] Lisa Ricchio – Past President STANDARD BANK 708.499.2062 X60810 [email protected] Aimee Feehery – Director LINCOLN-WAY HIGH SCHOOL 815.464.4000 [email protected] Pauline Modjeski – Director WHITE STREET CAFÉ, LLC. 11 White Street, Unit 111 [email protected] Richard Rappold – Director LAW OFFICE OF RICHARD W. One of our main priorities as Directors is to strive to enhance member benefits. Our programs continue to evolve and improve. Case in point, our monthly Meet, Greet and Network event. The 2015 series begins February 17th and recur on the third Tuesday of the month through November 17th beginning at 8:00am (come early) at the Frankfort Township building 11000 W. Lincoln Highway, Frankfort Illinois 60423. What is the Meet, Greet and Network event? Simply put, it is an opportunity for our members to come together, network and share their 30 second pitch with the other attendees. Each event has a sponsor ($60). The sponsor is highlighted and has the opportunity to share with the entire group of attendees their business more so than the 30 second pitch. Each event also has a presenter. The goal of the committee is to bring presenters whose message is geared toward adding value to you, our members. Meet, Greet and Network continues to gain popularity reflected by our ever increasing attendance. How can you help? First, come to our event and you will benefit. Second, consider a sponsorship as it’s a great way to promote your business. Third and last consider being a presenter, if you have a message that can be of benefit to our attendees we want you in our program. We are currently setting the sponsors and presenters for 2015 and it will fill quickly. Be in touch with the Chamber Office and we will do our best to accommodate your request. Best of luck in 2015! So what does riding a bike have to do with sales training? Well, even though some traditional selling techniques are still being taught in seminars, people in sales today know that such antiquated techniques simply don’t work anymore. Every sales prospect has heard the old techniques countless times before. That’s why prospects can so easily control the sales call – they already know what the salesperson is going to say. Remember when you learned how to ride a bike? You didn’t just jump on a two-wheeler and take-off. First you had to acquire techniques and then practice mastering them. You had to learn balance, negotiate turns, manipulate the brakes, and visualize yourself riding that bike! Fortunately you had someone to steady the bike while you practiced. You needed a guiding hand and words of encouragement. You fell off, but kept trying until the day you grabbed the handlebars and pedaled all by yourself. Occasionally, you still run off the path, but there is no doubt about your ability to ride. Learning how to sell professionally is a lot like learning how to ride a bike. People don’t learn to sell at a seminar, but the reinforcement training of a seminar is helpful. Nor do people learn how to sell from reading books and listening to CDs, but these, too, are useful tools, like training wheels, or a balancing hand. Coaching is the secret weapon of reinforcement training. Sandler Training is a proven, effective, and efficient Selling System delivered by ongoing, reinforcement sales training by licensed trainers/coaches. Craig Lyons is the authorized Sandler Trainer in the southwest suburbs. He has over 30 years of sales and leadership experience in companies both large and small. He is a business consultant, speaker, coach and trainer. He is sought out by business owners and executives when they discover that an unacceptable gap exists between their business goals and reality. To find out more about what Sandler Training offers, please visit our website at www.chief. sandler.com, like us on Facebook at Chief Performance Dynamics, give us a call at (815) 735-6914, or send us an email at [email protected].
