Saving God,
whose Son, Jesus Christ,healed the sick
and brought them wholeness of body and mind:
inspire us, his disciples,
so that we may constantly proclaim his gospel
by our words
and by the dedication and integrity of our lives;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

A Reading from Isaiah 40: 21-31
Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have
you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is he who sits above the circle of the
earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a
curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in; who brings princes to naught, and makes the
rulers of the earth as nothing. Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem
taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries
them off like stubble. To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy
One. Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and
numbers them, calling them all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power, not
one is missing. Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel,
‘My way is hidden from the Lord , and my right is disregarded by my God’? Have you not
known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the
earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to
the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young
will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount
up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

O praise the Lord,
for it is good to sing praises to our God: and to praise him is joyful and right.
The Lord is rebuilding Jerusalem:
he is gathering together the scattered outcasts of Israel.
He heals the broken in spirit:
and binds up their wounds.
He counts the number of the stars:
and calls them all by name.
Great is our Lord, and great is his power:

A Reading from 1 Corinthians 9: 16-23
If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and
woe betide me if I do not proclaim the gospel! For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward;
but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. What then is my reward? Just this:
that in my proclamation I may make the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my
rights in the gospel. For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so
that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those
under the law I became as one under the law (though I myself am not under the law) so that I
might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law
(though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law) so that I might win those
outside the law. To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. I have become all
things to all people, so that I might by any means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel,
so that I may share in its blessings.

GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST
As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James
and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at
once. He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she
began to serve them. That evening, at sunset, they brought to him all who were sick or
possessed with demons. And the whole city was gathered around the door. And he cured many
who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the
demons to speak, because they knew him. In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up
and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. And Simon and his companions hunted
for him. When they found him, they said to him, ‘Everyone is searching for you.’ He answered,
‘Let us go on to the neighbouring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that
is what I came out to do.’ And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their
synagogues and casting out demons.

AN INVITATION TO JOIN IN THE PILGRIM COURSE IN 2015...
Pilgrim has been designed as an Anglican way of growing as a Christian and is great
value for everyone, whether or not we have been church members for decades or
just enquiring. It unpacks the basic teaching of the Christian Faith, shows us how to
pray and live like Jesus. Speak to Penny, Jonathan or the Pilgrim team.
ANNUAL REPORTS, AGMs AND CHURCH ELECTIONS & APPOINTMENTS
In February we will have the opportunity to share annual reports on the life of the
Church and elect officers (parish and centre wardens, treasurer and parish
nominators ) and a parish council for the next year. Please reflect and pray about
these important matters. Annual reports from church bodies will be welcome
(please give to the parish office) anytime from now until February 11th. Election
forms will be available shortly. The following formal meetings will be held in the
next few weeks:

LITURGICAL ASSISTANTS
We are looking to strengthen and renew our great team of Las (Liturgical Assistants)
in the next few months. A first step will be to hold an LA training session – on
Saturday 14 February, 9 – 10.30 am, at St Luke’s. This for all LAs – whatever
worship centre you may be attached to – and for anyone who would like to think
about becoming an LA. This will help us all look at the new LA Handbook from the
diocese (which all LAs should now have received) and to ‘walk through’ worship
and other arrangements (particularly helpful for the clergy, old and new, as we settle
into our current patterns). Please do come along if you can. We will also arrange
opportunities soon for a ‘run through’ of special LA requirements which are specific
to All Saints and St Marks.
Please do also speak with the clergy or centre wardens if you would like to assist as
a Liturgical Assistant but are not yet one!

HOLY YOGA is experiential worship specifically created to deepen your relationship with

opportunity to all people to authentically connect to God through word, prayer, worship,
and the practice of yoga to contemporary and Christian music. It is available to anyone

SAT 21 MAR: Quiet Day at St Luke’s
LIVING CONTEMPLATIVELY IN A BUSY WORLD, led by Fr David King
Busyness of life distracts people in all walks of life. The catch cry heard so often is “I
am so busy.” Or perhaps you have noted how it is such a familiar opening question
for people to ask today “have you had a busy day?” Busyness can keep us on the
move from the moment our feet hit the floor of a morning till we fall into bed at
night, often without energy to pay attention to ourselves and how we really are. But
busyness is a distraction from the real world - the world of self and the world of God,
so as spiritual people: ARE WE NOT CALLED TO BE DIFFERENT?
This quiet day explores the invitation from our God to live differently. It will seek to
understand this invitation in the context of the great commandment, love God and
love your neighbour as yourself. It will canvass pathways, strategies, ideals for living
the spiritual life, drawing closer to God while being gentle on ourselves and
attempting to love ourselves as God loves us.

OTHER UPDATES
Thought for the Week from MU - Sunday 8 February 2015 Burundi
Gender-based violence is a problem in Burundi, but slowly things are starting to
change, thanks to the work of Mothers’ Union. We pray for all Mothers’ Union
initiatives to support loving, respectful and flourishing relationships. “Let us then
approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and
find grace to help us in our time of need. (Hebrews 4.16)
We pray for the future of the literacy and financial education work in Burundi and give
thanks for all that has been achieved so far. May God lead members in effective ways
of reaching out to communities and enabling self-sufficiency.
