Dear All
In order to support our literacy initiative, we will be introducing a whole school
reading session, and this will commence in tutor time from Friday 27th February. The
reading session will involve the whole school for 20 minutes and each student has
been asked to bring a fictional text to read in their registration class on Friday
mornings. For this initiative to be successful, we do need 100% commitment from
every student and it is important that all parents support us in this venture. Some
tutors already have reading sessions for their students in the mornings, but what we
propose will enable every tutor group in the school to have consistent experience of
reading time to support their comprehension and enjoyment of literature. The school
library has a supply of books for students who may have exhausted all of their own
reading materials at home but, in the first instance, we want students to bring in
appropriate fiction from home. We ask parents also to support form teachers in
checking the appropriateness of the books selected. We believe that reading is so
important that the initiative will involve everyone in the school community both
students and staff reading together.
I am pleased to report that we will be launching an online rewards shop for students
from the start of the summer term. After consultation with the student council, we
have been given many creative options for rewards, which students would value and
appreciate. We will be aiming to develop consistency in rewarding students by
drawing on objective criteria such as the number of excellent effort grades awarded in
reports, or a good record of attendance and punctuality. This will be a useful counter
balance to the individual rewards that teachers give to students in lessons, which can
sometimes generate a sense of subjectivity and can lend itself to inconsistency.

The deadline for the return of key stage 4 option choices is today, Friday 6th February.
Over the next two weeks, students will have individual advice or further guidance if
we are unable to meet their requests, or we feel that further support is needed to
help them to make the best and most appropriate choice.
Our policy for Equality reflects our commitment to addressing any prejudice related
incidents. Although incidents, which breach our Equality policy are very rare indeed,
all incidents of bullying or name-calling based on prejudice are taken very seriously
and every opportunity is taken to ensure that all students are made aware through
assemblies, PSHE and Citizenship, of the importance of treating everyone equally and
with respect.
We had a successful parents’ consultation meeting and there was good discussion on
this occasion about meeting the language needs of students who are recent arrivals
from EU countries. Thanks also to parents who completed the questionnaires at the
parents’ evening last week. Feedback is always important in shaping our priorities and
the results from the recent parents’ questionnaires are accessible on the VLE.
Thank you for your continued support.
Yours sincerely
H.H.S. Abbott
