4—LEGAL EMPLOYMENT WEEKLY
Illinois Paralegal Association
“SETTING THE
PACE”
By: Caren Mansfield, a
member of the Illinois
Paralegal Association
As a professional organization dedicated to
educating and serving
paralegals as well as the
public and other members of the legal profession the Illinois Paralegal Association strives
to be a pace setter in
the paralegal profession.
The Paralegal Advanced Competency
Exam or PACE is a
competency examination for the experienced
paralegal. This competency exam was promulgated by the National Federation of Paralegal Associations. One
of the chief reasons this
examination was prepared was for the public to have a manner in
which to gauge the
competency of an experienced paralegal.
While PACE is not
required to enter or
work in the profession
paralegals wishing to
expand their responsibilities and duties may
find that proof is required of competency.
Achieving the PACE
credential may be what
is required and may
give the PACE certified
paralegal an edge in
employment opportunities.
The PACE exam was
created in conjunction
with PES, a company
that prepares examinations, and a task force
composed of paralegals,
members of the public,
attorneys and paralegal educators who are
not also attorneys. This
task force acted as consultants to PES in developing a job analysis
of the major areas of responsibilities, tasks and
job knowledge and
skills of paralegal practice, validated that
analysis, finalized the
exam specifications and
developed the actual
exam. Tier One includes 200 multiple
choice questions in a
computerized testing
format. This computerization also allows the
test to be offered in a
consistent manner ensuring that the results
are accurate and fair.
