oday, we’re delighted to announce that
planning permission has been applied
for to build two, brand new, Nissen Huts
at the Airfield. The first, located adjacent to the War Memorial, is designed to
accomodate what is likely to be the largest collection of 453rd memorobilia in
existence. The collection has been made
available by virtue of the generosity of
the family of a great supporter of the
airfield. We will, in due course, reveal
more about this extraordinary collection and the generosity which will see it
have a permanent home at Old Buckenham.

March will see the first time that the Airfield uses its new marquees and lighting
equipment as we welcome the hugely popular
Scratch Band on the 14th March.
The Scratch Band have been playing to sell
out audiences over the last 21 years. Initially formed for one night in order to raise
funds for Scottow Church Roof (which was subsequently replaced), the band proved so popular a few more gigs were lined up. 21 years
later the 10 piece band still includes two of
the founding members and a set filled with
blues, soul, pop and rock that has won the
band a legion of fans.
Entry to the gig is free for members, but £8
for everyone else. Doors open at 7pm on the
14th March.

more upgrades
ebruary and March will see a range of new improvements around the airfield. As announced
fo
last month all the hangar floors are to be paintur
ed and work will shortly commence, with a half bay
area being treated, then painted over the course of two days.
Each section will be tackled in this fashion to limit inconvienience. Inevitably this does mean that there will be areas
out of bounds for 48 hours, we’ll keep home based members updated with the schedule once we start.
he hangars are nearly full, with the space in the new
bays being taken up far faster than expected. There are
really only two spaces available for normal sized aircraft, with the possibility of also fitting in a smaller machine such as a Pitts. We’ve also just undertaken the first
phase of work to upgrade the hangars. You’ll notice a brand
new pedestrian door for Bay 1, and new door stops on Bays 4 &
5. The main doors of Bays 1 & 2 are about to be fitted with new
guides in order to cure their occasional tendency to stick.
Please, however, always remember to be gentle with the doors
and move them slowly. They weigh around a ton each, and can
skip rails and the building frame if abused.
lso, expect to see around an acre of grassland to the West
of the taxiway converted to parking and aircraft circulation space in March.
any of you will also have noticed one very welcome
change. The scrapyard on the approach to Runway 25 has
finally disappeared after more than 20 years. This is as
the result of the land having new owners, with whom we’re in
touch and already seem to have excellent relations. They have
not formulated their plans in relation to the former runway,
and have promised to bear us firmly in mind when contemplating the future.
inally, we continue to improve safety. Shortly a new
electronic barrier will be fitted at the 07 intersection,
thereby creating a physical obstacle to prevent any
crossings other than by authorised persons & tenants. If you
deal with any of the tenants on the Northside, please note
that you will need to be escorted by them when crossing.

hanks to considerable work undertaken by Roger and Maggie Haverson, we’re
busy creating a small book detailing the past, present and future of the
airfield. Visitors and members alike are constantly asking us for more information about the airfield, and this publication is the result of considerable
demand.
limited initial production run will go to print in March and we’re looking
at a variety of different means of distribution, including the potential of
adding the book to iBooks and other such epub distribution methods. More details to follow in due course.
