Why do you choose to pursue a career
in internal audit?
Internal auditing departments provide a unique
opportunity. You’re given exposure to all aspects of the
business, evaluating different processes and gaining a
true understanding of the organization. That experience
can make someone extremely marketable within their
organization.
Whether you’re working in industry or in public accounting,
you’re in a position where you can add value. It’s an exciting
and rewarding career path. You can feel proud that you’ve
made an impact on your organization.
Who are your personal role models?
Why?
I can’t say I have a personal role model. So many people I
have met and respect have had an influence on me.
Everyone’s different and there is no one person I can single
out that I’ve modeled my career after. That said, I look up to
my grandmother. She is the most financially savvy, social,
and charismatic individual I’ve ever met. It’s so unassuming
when you meet her, which is all the more reason to respect her.
What are your personal goals?
I want to have the CIA and CPA exams finished before I start
full-time. It’s going to be a challenge, but I think it’s doable.
“Whether you’re working in industry or in public
accounting, you’re in a position where you can
add value. Internal auditing is an exciting and
rewarding career path. You can feel proud that
you’ve made an impact on your organization.”
What is your dream job? Why?
My dream job would have to be professor. There’s a ton
of opportunity in the field of accounting and internal
auditing. It’s a dream in that there’s a lot of work involved
in becoming a professor, but it’s definitely possible and
something students in my position keep an open mind for.
What advice do you have for someone
looking to pursue an internal audit
career?
Anyone interested in the field should become a member
of The IIA. A lot of member resources are available to help
someone new in the industry. Also, take part in local IIA
meetings and network with local practitioners.
