Spring 2015: How to Enroll NEW STUDENTS: PRE-REGISTRATION Students who have never taken a class through Continuing Education or who have not taken a class in 12 months can pre-register (program intake and signing of all documents) from January 6 - January 16. Intake Meeting Continuing Education Meeting will include signing of paperwork and discussion of rights and responsibilities of participants of this program. Completing an intake does NOT guarantee enrollment in a class. You MUST call back and speak to CE staff during open registration staff will schedule intake meeting at Paraquad. Bring ID, Social Security card, PCP and CIMOR (diagnosis documentation). Legal guardian, if different than participant, must be present. Call (314) 289-4200 between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday-Friday and speak with an Information and Referral staff member. OPEN REGISTRATION for ALL STUDENTS runs from January 19 - January 23. No exceptions. Classes begin the week of February 2 and conclude the week of April 20. If you are assisting an individual with registration for class(es), we strongly encourage the individual to contact us. Paraquad is a Center for Independent Living. We would like for students to learn to advocate for themselves. If you are calling from another agency and have several interested individuals, we welcome your support throughout the registration process. We will make every attempt to serve as many interested individuals as possible, with your assistance. Other Things You Need to Know Transportation: LIMITED TRANSPORTATION IS AVAILABLE. Transportation is NOT guaranteed. Before you request transportation, please try to find an alternative way to get to class (e.g., a friend, family member, neighbor, bus or Call-A-Ride). Arrangements and requests are first-come, first-served and based on routing, previous transportation records and attendance. You MUST request transportation with a staff member during registration. A staff member will contact you before classes start to notify you if you will NOT be receiving transportation. AFTER REGISTRATION HAS ENDED, call the Transportation Department for pick-up times at (314) 289-4276 or (314) 289-4274. Students are required to review the transportation policy. Dropping a Class: If you decide not to attend the class in which you have enrolled, you must notify the Continuing Education staff immediately to be officially dropped from the class. Accommodations: If you need adaptive equipment, an interpreter or class materials in large print, you must notify staff at the time of registration. Support Staff: If a participant receives 24-hour residential support, staff must accompany the student to class. Respect for Staff and Students: All students, staff and family are expected to respect the teachers and Continuing Education staff. We want this to be an enjoyable experience for everyone. Continuing Education Classes Spring 2015 Monday (February 2 - April 20) 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Hazelwood Community Center 1186 Teson Road • Hazelwood, MO 63042 Healthy Living: Topics covered include low-impact exercises, nutrition on the go and stress management techniques that can be applied at home, work or in the community. Managing Your Money: Topics covered include learning/reviewing identification of coins and paper money, learning to count money/make change, budgeting personal finances, learning to make complete transactions and understanding labeling/ advertising. Tuesday (February 3 - April 21)Paraquad 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. 5240 Oakland Avenue • St. Louis, MO 63110 Computers: Topics covered include computer terms, keyboarding, using the Internet and Microsoft Word. Healthy Job Habits: Topics covered include learning the importance of good health and personal appearance in getting and keeping a job (e.g., grooming techniques, appropriate dress attire, attitudes, getting along with others, exercise and nutrition). Healthy Relationships and Self-Esteem: Topics include developing appropriate relationships with your employers, coworkers and in the community, learning resources to turn to when situations arise, sexual safety, circumstances surrounding decisionmaking in personal relationships and emotions and feelings that come with becoming older. This class is co-ed. Improving Reading and Writing: Topics covered include learning ABCs/learning to write your name, basic word identification, everyday reading and language used in the community and writing sentences and paragraphs. Wednesday (February 4 - April 22) 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Webster Groves High School 100 Selma Avenue • Webster Groves, MO 63119 Computers: Topics covered include computer terms, keyboarding, using the Internet and Microsoft Word. Cooking: Topics covered include menu planning, measurements, kitchen safety, basic cooking skills (e.g., using stovetop, oven and microwave). Thursday (February 5 - April 23)Paraquad 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. 5240 Oakland Avenue • St. Louis, MO 63110 Driver’s Education: Topics covered include rules of the road and the Missouri Driver Guide. Everyday Numbers: Topics covered include telling time, measuring ingredients while cooking, counting money and determining distances. Planning Your Apartment: Topics covered include advocacy for independent living, budgeting, determining household needs and home safety. Reading Comprehension: Topics covered include story elements, grammar and applying comprehension to real-life situations.
