THE SOUTH’S LARGEST GUIDE TO GAMING & FUN www.jackpotmagazine.com February 5 - February 18, 2015 JACKPOT! MAGAZINE 13 CASINO CORNER A personal view of casinos os by Lori Beth Susman There are many Valentine’s Day dining options in this issue. You will find buffet specials, fine dining choices and even dessert offerings, some which extend the entire Valentine’s Day weekend. For those who like sweet things, including chocolate, ISLAND VIEW CASINO RESORT has a couple of options, including a special price on hand-dipped strawberries. But, for something really delightful, there is the Chocolate Delights, an event in the View Showroom on Feb. 14. From 2 to 10 p.m., Coast Candymaker’s confectioners will create a seemingly endless array of chocolate-covered treats. Tickets for this Valentine’s Day event are $25 and can be purchased at the showroom door in the Gulfport casino. You can also read in this issue about our dining experience in the GOLDEN NUGGET’s Michael Patrick’s Sports Cafe. While we were expecting to find only typical sports bar choices, we were pleased to discover the cafe has a really expansive menu, with everything from chicken wings and nachos (our favorites) to healthy salads, tasty sandwiches and scrumptious burgers. There is too much to tell here (see page 16), and trust us when we say the servings are more than generous and the food is terrific. While at Michael Patrick’s we met Patsy and Ronald Blancaneaux from the Westbank, La., area. The couple, who had just finished a shrimp po boy and the MP signature burger when we started talking, said the Nugget was their favorite casino to visit along the Gulf Coast. They love the hotel rooms and really enjoy the food in all the restaurants. As fans of the Golden Nugget, they were enthusiastic to help us with our review before heading out to the casino. Speaking of hotels, SILVER SLIPPER CASINO is adding nine luxury suites to its new hotel currently under construction. While the design change will reduce the room count from 142 to approximately 129 rooms, the suites are said to provide an enhanced customer experience and help the property stand out. The hotel is still expected to open in March. Just opened at HARD ROCK is Half Shell Oyster House. Many visitors are already familiar with this restaurant, as there are locations in Biloxi and Gulfport. At the Biloxi casino, the restaurant is in the space previously held by Vibe. We were excited to discover one of the features we loved about Vibe — the delicious sushi along — can be found at the new Half Shell, which is the only Half Shell to serve sushi. The restaurant is just one of several changes at Hard Rock. Players will note the casino floor has been reconfigured, the high limits area has been opened and made more accessible and there is a new VIP lounge. Expect to see more changes coming. Soon to open (in fact, perhaps open even as you are reading this) is the Fat Tuesday Daiquiri Bar at the BOOMTOWN CASINO Welcome Center. More than 12 varieties of signature daiquiris straight from the French Quarter will be offered, and there will be indoor and outdoor dining, music, TVs and more. Any golfers out there? Of course there are. HARRAH’ S GULF COAST has some specials at its Grand Bear Golf Course. Play a round of golf any time Sunday through Thursday and after noon on Friday and Saturday, through Feb. 14, for $42.80. Plus, starting Feb. 14, guests and locals living in Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties can hit the green for a round of golf any time of the day Sunday through Thursday for $65 and after noon on Friday and Saturday for $75. 14 JACKPOT! THE SOUTH’S LARGEST GUIDE TO GAMING & FUN www.jackpotmagazine.com February 5 - February 18, 2015 JACKPOT! MAGAZINE 21 Michael McDonald comes to Hard Rock GULFPORT — A prominent part of the soundtrack of many lives, over the course of his career, Michael McDonald has maintained popularity and has been awarded numerous accolades and honors in both personal and professional arenas. The five-time Grammy winner performs at Hard Rock on Friday, Feb. 13, at 8 p.m. Through the years, McDonald has remained an enduring presence in popular music. In 1975, the singer began a long association with Steely Dan, adding his unique timbre to songs like “Peg” and “Time Out of Mind,” touring with the band and singing backup and playing keyboards onstage. One year after the release of Steely Dan’s Katy Lied, McDonald got a call from the Doobie Brothers to join them on the road, and by 1977 McDonald was welcomed into The Doobie Brothers as a full member. In the years that followed, McDonald and the Doobie Brothers enjoyed tremendous commercial and creative success. Their sound evolved from guitar-driven rock to a sultry, tight R&B feel, with McDonald writing and singing lead on “Takin’ It to the Streets,” “What a Fool Believes” and “Minute by Minute,” among other signature songs. McDonald also began to build his own career. Since the 1982 release of If That’s What It Takes, he has completed a series of solo projects, each distinguished by its high production value, well-crafted songs and full-throated vocals. Successful singles include: “Yah Mo B There,” with James Ingram, which won a Grammy Award in 1984; “Sweet Freedom,” used as the theme for the Billy Crystal/Gregory Hines film Running Scared; “On My Own,” with Patti LaBelle, reached No. 1 on the Pop and R&B charts in March 1986; and “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)” reached the top 5 on the Pop charts and the top 10 on both the R&B and AC charts. Most recently, McDonald and the Doobie Brothers reunited for the album, Southbound, which features duets with some of country music’s biggest stars. Blake Shelton, Casey Revisited plays the hits James, Sara Evans and Toby Keith are just a few singers who performed on the album released last November. Tickets to see McDonald start at $19.99 and can be purchased through ticketmaster.com. Find your Friday night fever at Boogie Nights “Susie Q,” “Born on the Bayou,” “Run Through The Jungle,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “Fortunate Son” and “Who’ll Stop the Rain” are just a few of the hit songs sure to be sung by Creedence Clearwater Revisited when they return to Beau Rivage for one show on Friday, Feb. 13, at 8 p.m. The Revisited project was launched in 1995 to play live Creedence Clearwater Revival hits. Though they initially planned to play private parties, Revisited now performs up to 100 shows a year and released a double live album, Recollection, which features 22 classic hits. Since those early shows 20 years ago, the reaction to Creedence Clearwater Revisited’s concerts has been astounding, driven in part by a generation of kids who weren’t even born when the original music came out. Tickets to see Creedence Clearwater Revisited are $29.95, $39.95 and $49.95 plus tax and service fee and can be purchased by calling (888) 566-7469. 22 JACKPOT! THE SOUTH’S LARGEST GUIDE TO GAMING & FUN www.jackpotmagazine.com Gulf Coast man wins progressive jackpot BILOXI — A Mississippi Gulf Coast man won a $373,272.07 progressive jackpot recently playing a $1 Luxury Diamonds Monopoly slot machine at Palace Casino Resort. The player, who asked his name not be used, had inserted a $150 slot ticket in the machine and had only played five maximum coin bets of $5 when he hit the jackpot. Upon seeing the three Triple Monopoly Wild symbols on the payline, the winner immediately phoned his wife, who was playing in another area of the casino. He excitedly told her to “drop everything and come over to the machine where I’m playing!” It was only when she came to where he was that he told her he had won the progressive jackpot. The winner said he and his wife starting playing at the Palace after receiving an invitation to an event. The couple found it refreshing to play in a smoke-free environment. They also appreciated the casino’s mix of slot machines. When asked what he plans to do with his winnings, the player said he will donate some of the money to charity, but most would be given to his three grandchildren for their college education. The $373,272.07 jackpot was the fourth progressive jackpot to be won at Palace Casino Resort in less than two years. Tyler M. of Michigan won $7,217,175.15 in February 2013; Stephen S. of Deltona, Fla., won $911,230.73 in May 2014; and Judith M. of Jackson, Miss., won $439,948.58 in June 2014. By Paul Wade HOROSCOPE Your sign offers a supreme paradox, Aquarius Editor’s Note: Horoscopes are meant for entertainment purposes only and are for the time period February 5 - February 18, 2015. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) — Who are you exactly? The supreme paradox of your sign, Aquarius, strikes again, for someone often described as the most individualistic person in the zodiac, you are far more concerned with the dynamics of the collective, the group and what others desire than most people. Pisces (Feb. 19-March 19) — If you’re looking for new romance or more happiness in your existing relationships, you cannot get better than the combination of planets in your sign than now. Mars suggests passion and Venus means love; Neptune shows an intuitive rapport, while Chiron paves the way to heal wounds from the past. Subtlety and nuance are your way to proceed. Aries (March 20-April 19) — This period sees you keen on spending more time by yourself. Yet since there is little reduction in the demands being made on your time, you may discover you have just a few moments of privacy and you appreciate it all the more as a consequence. Taurus (April 20-May 20) — This period puts an intense focus on your career affairs, along with any other commitments you have taken on that emphasize a professional remit, rather than something more personal to you. When you get home at night you feel a warm sense of contentment. Gemini (May 21-June 20) — Mercury retrograde means mix-ups and misunderstandings, lost correspondence, travel chaos, etc. Mercury is linked to your constellation so you’ll see a number of your ideas being challenged and held up for review. Cancer (June 21-July 22) — This period suggests a great time for a vacation or longer sojourn overseas, while on the other hand promoting enlightenment and a process of re-education that creates a clear break from your previous perspective. Just do your best to ensure this signals a natural progression, rather than running away from complicated relationships. 28 JACKPOT! MAGAZINE February 5 - February 18, 2015 Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) — Looking again at your relationships, maybe things really have moved too fast. At this time you can draw breath and think again about what has come to pass in all your closest associations, and where that differed from what you had wanted and expected. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — The elevation of the asteroid Ceres is dwarfing your planet status and it’ll take a rewrite of current astrological wisdom to incorporate. Ceres isn’t until June, so don’t let this period get the better of you. Libra (Sep. 23-Oct. 22) — Planets pinpoint your everyday activities, like your workaday routines and health affairs for example. The latter are something we can all occasionally take for granted, but such matters are swiftly returned to the forefront of your attention during any bout of illness. Pay attention to your physical well-being. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) — With the Sun and Mercury meeting in the sector of your horoscope governing your home life, domestic situation and family affairs, you are thinking at length about where you’re living presently and about your plans for the future. Your relationship to your nurturing parent is back under the microscope. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) — This period is highlighting your inner life, along with your emotional needs. At this time you can withdraw into the bosom of your family, enjoying safety and security behind closed doors. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) — While your finances look relatively rosy and certainly far better than was the case in the recent past, much of this has come about through the influence of other people and their input into your economic circumstances. This is an unusual state of affairs that deviates considerably from the norm. You will eventually be back to relying on your own skills and talents.
