Local Food Growers to Meet
The February Growing Food and Profit group will be
Thursday, February 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 1204 13th St., in Dallas Center. Anyone interested in growing or eating locally grown food is welcome
to attend! Bring a potluck dish to share and your own table
service. Coffee will be provided. The potluck meal will
be followed by a program presented by Liz Kolbe, Horticultural Coordinator, Practical Farmers of Iowa, and Rick
and Stacy Hartmann, Small Potatoes Farm near Minburn.
Kolbe collected financial data from eleven Iowa vegetable
farms in 2014. She has grouped and summarized her findings and will share some insight as to the profitability and
related characteristics of these farms. The Hartmanns completed their 10th growing season as a certified organic vegetable farm in 2014. They have been able to create a stable,
well-recognized farm allowing them to meet their financial
and lifestyle goals. They will share some of the key decisions, changes and challenges they faced during their first
ten years that they feel would be helpful in the success of
other beginning or seasoned farm businesses. For more information, please contact Linda Nelson at 515-491-3984 or
[email protected]. Iowa State University Extension
& Outreach in Dallas County sponsors this group.
