Glad Tidings Denville Community Church February 2015 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Volume 2034No. 2 Rev. Edward H. Carll Senior Pastor Mike Semancik Music Director Janice McCrostie Youth Minister Kim Miller Children’s Music Jean Nightingale Office Administrator Entering this new year, our Small Groups ministries have started adding depth and breadth to our Church mission and ministries!!! The focal points in these small groups are all on essential “means of grace” for Methodists: Prayer, Bible Study, service to others in Jesus’ name, and deepening relationships within the Body of Christ! In addition to our prayer chain ministry, (which diligently offers prayers for the concerns of our church members, extended family, and friends of the congregation), a small group of folks is now gathering on Friday mornings for a time to quietly meditate and pray for the concerns we share for our neighbors, our community, and our world! The “Living the Covenant” Bible Study small group meets on Tuesday evenings, and is studying a number of covenant-related Bible stories which arise in the Hebrew scriptures and the Christian Gospels and epistles. The Heart 4 People small group will be starting up soon, considering the possibilities that God presents for partnering in education, support and community projects in Uganda. The Garden Party small group focuses on green-thumbing house-plants and outside gardens. And provides green-thumb creativity and inspiration for maintaining our church landscaping! The High Adventure Club is planning many fun adventures beginning with a winter hike in the Morris county area. Time and location are to be announced at a later date. If you keep your eyes on the weekly bulletin inserts and subsequent newsletters, you will see the special events and activities from other start-up Small Groups! If you have any wonderful/crazy/edgy/creative ideas for a small group ministry, you are invited to contact our Coordinators Dale and John Simms (973.625.0195) I am also excited that many of our youth recently experienced the SEARCH Weekend Retreat for Spiritual Maturity, in which our youth ministries leader Janice McCrostie has been involved for many years. The participants grew in their faith and made new friends who share their values. The 21 young people who are involved in our ongoing Confirmation process, will soon be headed on a field trip to St John’s UMC in NYC to visit this historic United Methodist congregation. I am personally inspired to see so many of the young people strengthening our Adult Choir with their presence! I am hopeful because the Confirmands are creating exciting partnerships with Mentors in our confirmation process! I am also grateful for the teens and young adults who are assuring that our media systems run smoothly for worship! In addition to these ministries for young people, DCC also supports and sponsors Scouting ministries with the Tiger Cub Scouts, Daisy Girl Scouts, our 50+ year old Boy Scout Troop, and an Explorer Post! Pastor Ed’s Article Continued… Are You Ready for Fat Tuesday at DCC! How about some delicious pancakes followed by a good ol’ Dixieland Jazz Band. Join us for a touch of New Orleans New Jersey style! COMING UP SOON !!! We have used the occasion for the past several years to help raise significant funds for our summer ASP Mission Trip and hope that you will invite your friends to come out and enjoy the evening, as we turn the corner on the seasons of the Church before the observance of Ash Wednesday on February 18th. The Lenten season begins with Ash Wednesday… and enters us into a more contemplative spiritual journey throughout Lent! As we develop our worship plans for the season, you can count on more wonderful music, spiritually enriching worship services, and times which will allow you to deepen your walk with God! Beat any of the winter doldrums you may experience by coming out to participating in and enriching our life-together here at DCC!!! Please remember to keep our ministries in your daily prayers, asking that God will richly bless all our efforts to be faithful and serve the purposes of Jesus Christ in the world! In our first meetings of the new year, the Youth Group began with a discussion about the choices that we make and how they can impact our relationship with Jesus. We also talked about how social media and technology can change our lives and friendships, and how we can use those outlets to further our relationship with Christ. Please mark your calendars as the Youth Group has begun planning a Movie Fundraiser night on Friday, March 13th 7:00PM that will be open to all! We will be showing a family friendly movie (TBD) for $5 per person or $20 per family. Youth Group members will also be providing refreshments for a small cost. Funds raised will go to Heart for People! The Denville Community Church Youth Group will be meeting in February at 6:30 PM on the 8th and 15th. Please join us for fun and fellowship! We will be ordering pizza, so please send $5 with your child if they plan to enjoy it! If you have any questions please contact Janice at [email protected]. 2 GIVING THANKS WITH THE UNITED METHODIST WOMEN We invite your family to use all or part of the lovely prayer below during the month of February as you ex- -Marion Coates press gratitude to God for your meals: For all the beauties of the day, The innocence of childhood’s play, For health and strength and laughter sweet, Dear Lord, our thanks we now repeat. For this our daily gift of food We offer now our gratitude, For all the blessings we have known Or debt of gratefulness we own. Here at the table now we pray, Keep us together down the way; May this, our family circle, be Held fast by love and unity. Grant, when the shades of night shall fall, Sweet be the dreams of one and all; And when another day shall break Unto Thy service may we wake. Edgar A. Guest, Grace at Evening SCOUT SUNDAY Boy Scout Sunday will be celebrated on Sunday, February 8th. If you are an active member of a troop, pack, or Venture Crew, please wear your uniform to church so that we may recognize your participation and service to this organization. I, along with the Salvation Army ,would like to thank all the volunteers who braved the cold, this past December and rang those bells and called out the famous, God Bless, to those who donated money in the kettles. Our efforts took in $3151 on the 3 Saturdays we rang. As a result ,there were 300 families awaiting food and toys for their children for Christmas, and your contribution of time in that cold, helped provide those items for them. All the money we take in from all the towns in Morris County from those kettles, helps run the Dover Corp, to provide shelter for the homeless, feed the poor and help them pay utility and heating bills. It provides after school care and summer camps for their children as well. Every dollar dropped in the kettles helps all these projects. Well done, to each and every one who helped or dropped a coin or dollar bill in the kettles. God Bless You All. Tony Mollegard 3 CONFIRMATION CLASS After a rocky return and having to cancel our first class of the new year on January 18th, we held a double lesson on the 25th as to not lose any momentum. We will also be holding an informal gather on February 1st for Confirmands and Mentors to begin working on their Credos, which will be presented on Confirmation Sunday. A little tidbit for you -- you can find the UMC Credos in the back of our hymnal! We think they will be very familiar to you! John Street UMC in NYC Our February 22nd trip to New York City is beginning to take shape. We will be leaving in the early hours via Lakeland Bus, to attend worship at John Street Church, the oldest Methodist Church in America. While there Confirmands will receive a history lecture and tour from the church’s Pastor. After the worship service, we’ll eat lunch and take in some of the sites offered in lower Manhattan, including the September 11th Memorial, and perhaps a trip to Trinity Church. Mentors are encouraged to join us, but if you are interested in being a chaperone please email Janice at [email protected]. On Monday January 12, 2015 the Township of Denville signed off on the Garage. We have received our Certificate of Occupancy. It was a long haul, but we now have a sturdy structure that will provide parking for the Pastor’s cars and a safe and dry approximately 20’ x20’ storage area for church materials and equipment. With the concrete pad for the Boy Scout trailer, and their promise to paint the trailer this spring to match the color of the garage, we will have a nice looking facility to service the church and the Boy Scouts. We have finished cutting and trimming the trees around the property to try to insure we will not have any building or vehicle damage due to any falling trees or limbs. A big Thank You to Bill Malzahn for getting this accomplished. Also a big Thank You to Bob Andersen and Gus Contreras for painting and for repairs they accomplished around the church including the changing out of the light bulbs in the sanctuary from 65w CFL to 150W LED. It has made a significant increase in the brightness of our sanctuary. We look forward to Spring to start the work finishing the replacement of the flat roof on Statham Hall and the associated masonry work to the walls and to make the needed repairs to the concrete entrance of the sanctuary and the parsonage’s rear steps. I would like to thank John Simms and Bill Malzahn for their service on the Trustees over the past three years. I also want to thank all the Trustees who have work diligently this past to insure our church not only looks great but operates efficiently. 4 Master Carpentry Plus Consider supporting us and your business by advertising here. 973-627-4050 PAINT AND WALLPAPER (across from the A & P shopping center) 150 East Main St. (Route 53) Denville NJ 07834 Handyman/ Carpenter No Job Too Small All Carpentry; Maintenance; Painting; Repairs and Replacements Gutters & cleaning; Roof repairs; and more! P.O. Box 115 Denville NJ 07834 5 I am pleased to announce that our next Christian Drama School play has been inspired by the courageous life of Amy Carmichael. TELL EVERYONE WE NEED MORE CHILDREN AND TEENS TO DO THIS EPIC PLAY! We also need 40 HEART FOR PEOPLE supporters to make heart-shaped sugar cookies to be packaged on February 7th and sold the week before Valentine’s Day in preparation for the Morris Knolls H4P Coffee House on February 21st. Read further to learn more about the Spring Play, Registration, and Upcoming H4P Events. Watch for updates on Facebook for CDS and H4P. As I prayed about what sort of play to create this spring, I began researching famous missionaries. I wanted to find a real person who could motivate us to a walk with Christ as we seek to love and serve others. Amy Wilson Carmichael has been right under our noses every Sunday with one of her songs located on page 458 of the Methodist Hymnal and countless other books in church libraries. The title I’ve selected for our new play is Amy Carmichael – The Mother’s Feet. When Amy encountered a saying in India, “Children tie the mother’s feet,” she was beginning to understand motherhood as a way to serve God, but it also gave her new insight into the sacrifice of Jesus as his feet were nailed to the cross. Our play will be primarily based on the book A Chance to Die written by Elisabeth Elliot (also a famous missionary) and some of the books written by Amy herself including: Things As They Are; Candles in the Dark; Walker of Tinnevelly; Mimosa; and If. The short book called If will be given to Senior Drama Class students during the Annual Cross Carry Retreat on Good Friday, April 3, 2015 Amy Carmichael As a teen in 1885, Amy Carmichael was determined to follow God’s guidance which led her to establish the Tin Tabernacle called “The Welcome” in Belfast, Ireland. (The church is still there today.) Our play will begin with the poor children and women of Ireland called “shawlies.” We will experience how Amy’s parents with Christian leaders and friends guided Amy’s journey from Ireland to Japan to Sri Lanka to India. In India, Amy founded the Dohnavur Fellowship, a refuge for children who were orphaned or unwanted or sold to the temple. In a culture where the “untouchables” had no voice, Amy became a mother for the children, and so they called her “Amma.” By the grace of God, many brave women and men helped Amy to establish the Dohnavur Village with a House of Prayer, a hospital, a school, a dairy farm, dormitories, and gardens. Amy lived in India for 53 years, through WWI, WWII, and Gandhi’s revolution. She died on January 18, 1951. Though she had no children of her own, she is a spiritual mother to thousands Spring classes for Christian Drama School will begin the week of February 16, 2015. Spring Registration is Sunday, February 15, after worship at the Denville Community Church from 10:30-11:00 a.m. and also at the Rockaway Valley Methodist Church, Boonton Township, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. CDS is an interdenominational non-profit organization welcoming everyone who wants to join. Our students represent 29 different congregations. Amy Carmichael – The Mother’s Feet will be presented at Morris Knolls High School on Mother’s Day weekend, May 9 and May 10, 2015. HEART FOR PEOPLE MORRIS KNOLLS HIGH SCHOOL CHAPTER The Morris Knolls HEART FOR PEOPLE chapter needs 40 people to make 2 dozen heart-shaped cookies each - for a total of 960 cookies. Denville, NJ 07834 The Church of the Open Door January, 2015 Disbanding the Building Committee and Disposition of Remaining Capital from the 2008 Stewardship Campaign Dear DCC Members and Friends, During our yearly Church Conference (annual corporate meeting) in November 2014, the Building Committee, which started its work in 2002, was officially disbanded. We felt it was important to communicate, to the entire congregation, this decision by the Church Conference. We also want to clearly communicate the disposition of the remaining funds from the Capital Campaign that were raised many years ago. Beginning in 2002, the leadership of Denville Community Church began to engage in research, evaluation and planning for expansion of our existing facilities. The “Ministry to Facility” and “Moving to Higher Ground” initiatives were launched, but then fell short of the capital stewardship campaign goal of $3,000,000.00. In a nutshell, because 2008 was such an abysmal year to begin fundraising, there was never sufficient momentum to reach the $3 million goal. The capital campaign raised $265,000. Here is how the money was spent: - The first goal of the Building Committee was realized, when, in June of 2009, the mortgage of $100,000 on the existing education wing and our second parsonage, was paid in full. The church remains debt-free! - $108,750 of the capital campaign fund was spent on architectural, engineering, various Township permits and filing fees and legal services for the project. Your Trustees have deposited the remaining funds into a separate interest bearing investment account, where it will grow. First and foremost, we are deeply appreciative of all who contributed funds to the Capital Campaign. We are also grateful to everyone who, over the course of many years, served on the Needs Assessment Team, the Expansion Realization team and the Building committee. We hope that it will give you confidence in the Trustees of the church, knowing that they have taken appropriate responsibility and invested your remaining Building Fund monies in a Trustee-directed investment fund. There may come a day in the future when we will develop some new plans; until that time, the funds you gave in good faith will be secure. Should you have any questions that seem unanswered or unaddressed by this letter, please feel free to contact the Trustees (Lee Haase, President - [email protected]), Administrative Council Chairperson (Jean Nightingale - [email protected] ), or Finance Committee. Chairperson (Dave Carnahan – [email protected]), or Pastor Ed Carll ([email protected]). Sincerely, Jean Nightingale, Admin. Council Chpsn.
