In conjunction with ........................... Leadership in Mental Health: Island Nations Course ........................... 11 - 17 MAY 2015 Creating Futures 2O15 Practice, Evidence and Creativity in Tropical and Remote Settings Cairns. 11-14 May 2O15 Shangri-La Hotel. The Marina, Cairns, Queensland MAJOR SPONSOR SUPPORTED BY: Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service Conference website: http://cf15.conorg.com.au Queensland Mental Health Commission @cf15 and #cf15 This is the sixth conference in a series in which the populations of interest are Indigenous peoples from Australia, New Zealand and beyond, the residents of Australia’s neighbouring island nations, and people living with and recovering from mental and/or physical illness or disability in remote and tropical areas. As with previous Creating Futures conferences there will be a focus on evidence and innovation in identifying and addressing the social determinants of mental and physical health and wellbeing. Special areas of interest will include: •Creativity; •Addressing social and behavioural determinants of chronic disease; •Impediments to progress in chronic disease management: policy and practice in substance misuse; •Sustaining our strength, resilience and imagination: Empowerment starts with Me; •Detained populations (forensic and other); •West Papua – forgotten refugees; ... and more. Building on the success and goodwill generated through previous conferences, the first day will be held at the Yarrabah Aboriginal community located 60km from Cairns and will be hosted by Gurriny Yealamucka, the local Aboriginal health service. The following three days will be in central Cairns at the Shangri-La Hotel. Each morning and afternoon will commence with internationally and nationally recognised plenary speakers with concurrent presentations and workshops following. Leadership in Mental Health: Island Nations Course MONDAY, 11 MAY – SUNDAY, 17 MAY 2015 Since 2008 Goa has been the site of the Leadership in Mental Health Course auspiced by Sangath, an Indian mental health NGO (sangath.com) with support from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (lshtm.ac.uk). That course has inspired workers from low and middle income countries around the world. For the first time, a tailored version of this course will be held in Cairns, Australia, with a view to addressing the particular issues of Australia’s neighbouring island nations. The Leadership in Mental Health: Island Nations Course will overlap Creating Futures and run for one week (11 May to 17 May, 2015). Conference plenaries are all relevant to course objectives and there will be a designated stream during parallel sessions for course participants through the conference itself. The Leadership in Mental Health Course has been designed to meet two key objectives: 1 To equip participants with the methods to develop and scale up interventions for people with mental disorders, and approaches to supporting mental health and wellbeing in low resource settings, and: 2 To enhance leadership skills needed to scale up health care programs and promote the human rights of people affected by mental disorders. This course builds capacity to meet the goals for the Movement for Global Mental Health (globalmentalhealth.org) and the Lancet series on Global Mental Health 2007. The course is designed for workers from settings in which resources are scarce and who are committed to improving care for people experiencing mental health disorders at a population level. Clinical expertise is not necessary but a commitment to promoting human rights at a policy and service level is critical. Participants from Australia’s neighbouring island nations will be prioritised in selection. Groups of participants from nations or regions are encouraged to apply and, where possible, issues identified for such groups through pre-conference correspondence will be integrated into group work through the course.
