STEWARDSHIP CORNER In Proverbs 3:9 we read, “Honor the Lord with your wealth and
with the firstfruits of all your produce.” The Israelites were required to bring to the Lord the
firstfruits of the harvest. In this way God was constantly recognized as the giver of the harvest.
The people of Israel were also required to bring the first-born of both man and animals. Through
this law, God was acknowledged as the source of all life when the first-born in Israel were
redeemed from the angel of death. This law was still in force when Jesus was born, and one of the
first acts of Joseph and Mary after the birth of Jesus was to present Him at the Temple in the rite
of the redemption of the first-born. Today we are encouraged to offer our firstfruits to the Lord.
Giving the first portion of our incomes honors God, supports His Church, helps the needy, and
gives us added spiritual blessings.
