BAPTISM CLASS FOR NEW PARENTS
The required Baptism class for new parents is held the second
Sunday of each month beginning with the 12:00 Mass parents are
asked to gather at St. Joseph’s statue to the right of the main altar.
Penance/Reconciliation
The Sacrament of Penance is celebrated every Saturday from
12:30-1:30 PM and 4:00-5:00 PM in our church or by
appointment.
Marriage
Arrangements are to be made at the Rectory office at least 9
months in advance. Pre-Cana and FOCCUS registrations must be
arranged through the parish.
Anointing of the Sick & Communion of the Sick
The anointing of the sick takes place after the 12:00 PM Mass on
the 4th Sunday of each month. Anyone who is homebound may
receive Holy Communion at home on a regular basis. Eucharistic
ministers assist the priests in this ministry. Please call the rectory ext. 9101.
Adoration
First and third Fridays of the month 12:45-3:00 PM in the Church.

THE FRONT PAGE OF LAST SUNDAY’S NEW YORK TIMES
Those of you who read this column with any regularity know by now that
one of the topics that I go back to over and over again is marriage and the
family and the problems of the family. One of the real hot button issues in
the Catholic Church today is divorce and remarriage. This is caused not
only because of the large number of divorces (although they are decreasing
in number) but because of the recent meeting in Rome on marriage and the
family. Although it was not the only subject discussed the topic that came
up with the most media attention was the question of Holy Communion for
the divorced and remarried. A number of cardinals and bishops suggested that the present pastoral practice of not allowing those who are
divorced and remarried without a Church annulment to receive Holy
Communion should be rethought. Please note that Catholics who are
divorced and not remarried and are not in any state of serious sin may
and should receive Communion.
This past Sunday right on the front page of the New York Times there was
a huge article on this precise subject. I think it is fair to say that the Times
take was that the Vatican wants to keep to the traditional teaching while
hurting Catholics want a change. Let me add right here that there should
be endless amounts of concern and care for divorced people whether
they are remarried or not. They have suffered and are objects of the love
of Christ’s Heart. Many of the divorced and remarried have come to the
conclusion that the Church is being rigid, unkind and unfair in telling
them they must abstain from Holy Communion. Others have simply
given up on the Church altogether. This is very sad.
It is true that the possibility of obtaining a Church annulment is there and
is much easier than is imagined. You also know that here at St. Aidan the
policy is that there will be no charge if the annulment fee constitutes a
hardship. The Diocese has a similar policy to guarantee that no one is denied an annulment simply because of finances. That would be unfair and
unjust. Nevertheless, any number of people has a genuine fear that the
whole process of annulment is cumbersome and unpleasant—and for
them it seems to be virtually impossible. So, sadly enough, they avoid
the whole thing. Some pay scant attention to Church teaching and receive
the sacraments anyway. Others live in sadness at being separated from the
Eucharist. All this is very unfortunate.
In the midst of all this certain things should be kept in mind:
Valid sacramental marriages are indissoluble. That simply means that such
marriages are incapable of being dissolved by any earthly power. Christ Himself said: “What God has joined together, let no man put asunder.” (Mark
10:9)
Non-sacramental marriages (those in which at least one of the parties is not
baptized) may be dissolved.
Annulments may be sought by an appeal to a Diocesan Tribunal. The best
and simplest way to initiate this is contact your parish priest. He will tell you
what you need to know. I have been acting as an advocate for decades and
will gladly help anyone.
There are difficult cases where it may be difficult to prove the nullity of a
marriage. In such instances, one should consult a parish priest.
While many people like to discuss all these things and give their opinion, I urge
anybody who has any question about marriage or annulment or reception of the
sacraments to discuss such matters with a priest. Do not base your spiritual life
on misinformation given by well meaning people whose training in sacramental
theology and canon law is little or nothing. I cannot emphasize enough how willing I am to help you in these pastoral situations. You only have to drop in for a chat.

We have received the following communication from the Diocese of Rockville Centre about the upcoming Synod of Bishops which will be held later this year. Input is welcomed and precise instructions are given how your comments may be relayed to the Bishops. You are cordially encouraged to
express your thoughts. Hard copies of the document can be obtained in the Rectory office.
Dear Father,
As you know, the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops was held in October 2014 with the theme: “The Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelization.” This Extraordinary Synod will be followed by the Ordinary
General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, October 4-25, 2015 with the theme: “The Vocation and Mission of the
Family in the Church and in the Contemporary World.” The final document from of the Extraordinary Synod, the Relatio Synodi, is the preparatory document or “Lineamenta” of the XIV Ordinary General Assembly. As is customary
in the synod process, His Eminence, Cardinal Lorenzo Baldisseri, the General Secretary of the Synod of Bishops invites consultation on this topic to help with its preparation.
Contained within this Preparatory Document which was issued by the Holy See to begin this process is a series of
questions. This document can be found at:

with your parishioners.

A Study Program for
Lent 2015
On February 19, 2015 we will start a Bible study
course for adults and mature teen faith formation,
presented in six sessions. This new program will
answer the questions, “What is the New Evangelization?”, “Why is it worthwhile?” and “How
does one do it?”
Today, we need a new passion for the mission of offering friendship
with Jesus Christ to others. We need new expressions and methods
to reach out to an increasingly secular culture, especially in the
West. Secularism tries to push God out of the public square and
deny his existence. We are called to spread Christ’s love universally.
The New Evangelization Formation Program is a wonderful way
of learning to do “little things with great love” and to give testimony to Christ by our everyday lives.
We will start February 19th-mornings at 10:00 AM and evenings at

EXERCISE PROGRAM
Margo Bores will be holding an Exercise Program which will be held at
the Williston Park Village Hall beginning Monday, February 2nd.
Classes will be held every Monday and Thursday at 9:45 AM. There
will be no class on Thursday, February 19th. Classes will run until the
end of May. Exercises are approved by the Arthritis Foundation. Come join the fun and be
healthy!
GIRL SCOUT COOKIES
Girl Scouts from troop #1151 will be selling Girl Scout cookies outside of church this Sunday,

Words Matter!-Religious freedom watchdog groups are concerned that elected officials are
changing terminology. They often refer to America's "freedom of worship" rather than the comprehensive term, "freedom of religion". “Freedom of Religion”, our first and most fundamental God-given right,
guarantees all Americans the freedom to practice our religion in the public square, and to live out our conscientiously held beliefs. “Freedom of Worship”, however, means the right to pray within the confines of a place or
designated building of worship or to privately believe. It also excludes the right to practice our faith in families
and communities as well as our education, charitable and healing missions.

yet unborn it is essential that Americans understand this freedom and the circumstances from which it

ST. AIDAN ROSARY ALTAR SOCIETY

When a loved one dies, a period of grief usually follows. It is almost impossible for humans
to experience loss without feeling some kind of grief.

LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA
This last week I was reading again the “Joy of the Gospel” (the book we received at Christmas), since it is so inspiring it needs to be repeated. I keep
reading Chapter Four and found that it helps me to see my Faith in a new way. Our Father loves all of us with an infinite love; bestow upon us an infinite dignity.
The Son of God, Our Lord Jesus Christ, assumed our human flesh, then every human
person is assumed into the very heart of God. Jesus shed his blood for all of us; redeemed us in His love of all human beings. God, in Christ, redeems not only the individual person but the entire relationship existing between all of us.
Our Lord gave us the Holy Spirit who is at work in all of us and helps us in every situation and with His infinite divine mind, connects the wisdom of God to our daily lives.
If we reflect on all these points, the very mystery of the Trinity reminds us that we are
created in the image of that divine communion, accepting God’s love and loving Him in
return with the gift of love received from the Father, brings to us the very fundamental
desire: to make known to all men and women the Gospel, for the Father “desires the
salvation of every man and woman, and His saving plan consists in gathering up all
things in Christ, things in heaven and things on earth.” (Eph 1:10).
How can this be accomplished? If we realize that our sisters and brothers are the extension of the incarnation for each of us, then we will find the work of Evangelization a
primary and fundamental response to God’s desires!
This month our Parish will start a Study Program: “The New Evangelization” which
will tell what is the New Evangelization, Why is it worthwhile? How does one do it? I
encourage you to register for it, it is only six weeks and it is so important to reach out to
our secular culture that tries to deny God’s existence! You can read about this program
in this weekend’s bulletin. Try to register now!
The CDs that are in our kiosks also are answers to Christ’s call to Evangelization as for

ATTENTION VETERANS:MANGANO ANNOUNCES FREE VETERAN WORKSHOP
Mineola, NY - Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano announced today that the Nassau
County Veterans Service Agency along with the Vietnam War Veterans Association Inc., Suffolk Independent Living Organization, Green Homes Long Island and Chase Bank will be hosting a Free
Veteran Workshop on Wednesday, February 11th at 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the Freeport Recreation
Center, Room 102, 130 E. Merrick Road in Freeport. The workshop is open to all veterans and will
provide a great opportunity for veterans to meet with certified benefits counselors from the Nassau
County Veterans Service Agency and several other organizations that are looking to help our heroes. “My administration is committed to providing a better life for our veterans,” said County Executive Mangano.” “Our Veterans Service Agency has helped to secure an unprecedented amount of
benefits for our local heroes while also helping to provide workshops, putting together veteran stand

FOOD PANTRY: Our next monthly food drive will take place next weekend, February
7th /8th. If you wish to donate non-perishable food and personal hygiene items please bring
them to the back of Church or across the street to the Parish Social Ministry Office. We
also have a refrigerator for eggs, dairy products, sliced bread and a freezer for ground beef,
chicken cutlets and frozen pizzas.
PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY – Our Prayer Shawl Ministry meets the second and fourth
Monday of each month at 9:45 AM in the Peter and Paul Room of the Finamore Center to
knit or crochet prayer shawls or lap blankets for our sick and homebound parishioners. New
members are always welcome. You need not know how to knit or crochet. We have talented parishioners who can teach you. The next meeting will take place on Monday, February 9th . If you have some wool to donate to this ministry, please bring it to the Parish Social Ministry

1st COMMUNION PARENTS MEETING – There will be two meetings conducted for parents of children scheduled to receive 1st Communion this spring. The meetings will be held at 7:30 PM in Msgr. Kirwin Hall on Tuesday,

DID YOU KNOW? – A gathering of Special Olympics athletes on January 27th was animated by the presence of a Seattle Seahawks player and an NFL Hall of Famer who both experienced first-hand the joy of Special Olympics during a Superbowl week event. Seahawks
tight end Luke Wilson joined the young athletes for a football skills clinic and flag football
games sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, Arizona Special Olympics and Catholic Athletes for Christ at Nozomi Park in Chandler, Arizona. Wilson was joined at the event by NFL Hall of Fame
offensive tackle Anthony Munoz considered by many to be the greatest offensive lineman in the history of
the game.

and we are pleased that we could help these young people share in the excitement of the big day here in
Phoenix” said Knights of Columbus Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, “Special Olympics does great work for
