MISSION STATEMENT We, the family of Saint Martha Parish, in order to live richly in our Catholic heritage and Parish traditions, through the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the example of Saint Martha’s hospitality, devote our mind, body and spirit to: Pray to God, through the most exalted mystery, the celebration of the Eucharist and recognize in this Union with Christ the Sacrifice, Sacrament and Real Presence. Foster a home where Christianity is welcomed as the focal point, which will allow us to continue to grow as selfless, humble Catholic individuals and integral, involved members of our Parish and community; Proclaim the Good News, as did our Patron, Saint Martha, by expressing our commitment to our faith as shown in our actions, spoken in our words, and reflected in our thoughts. Serve, with humility, the spiritual and physical needs of all God’s people, born and unborn, by practicing our faith, both inwardly and outwardly, to ensure and strengthen our Catholic future. We join in communal and individual prayer to God, with Mary, our Mother, and with the help and strength of our parish patron, Saint Martha, so that we, like she, may carry the Gospel Message and profess our belief in Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God. WE ARE A TITHING PARISH God gives us everything we have and allows us to keep 90% of it for any good purpose. He simply asks that we return the first 10% to Him (5% to the local parish, 5% to God’s other good works, our personal chariƟes) in graƟtude. This spirituality of Ɵthing is as old as the Bible itself, and disposes us to make God first in every area of our lives! The aim is to secure not the Ɵthe, but the Ɵther, not the giŌ, but the giver—for God! PASTORAL COUNCIL MEMBERS Elected / Appointed: Kathy Cantz, Art Calvo, Bobbie Harrison, Dolly Tyndall, Michael Young, Connie DiFillippo, Janice Gerold, Helen Konstance, Tom Gilbert, Ex officio: Mrs. Karen Donofry, Deacon Ray Gwynn, Fr. MARTHA PARISH SERVICES AND SCHEDULES Stewardship is a Way of Life Stewardship is a Way of Life God’s Plan for Giving: Tithing: Weekend of February 1, 2015: $11,908.32 Income for February 2, 2014: $12,946.00 Children’s Offering for February 1, 2015: $64.32 High School Offering for February 1, 2015: $5.00 Christmas Collection: $22,824.00 Catholic Bishop Relief Fund: $713.00 Electronic Contributions: $1,044.00 From the Pastor: During the recent Catholic Schools Week I was reflecting that, in a sense, the parish family does more than tithe towards the school; in fact, it gives about 20% of its income to the school! Double tithing! Why do we do this? Because people direct their resources to those things in which they believe! And so, the faithful tither shows, by setting the first 10% aside for God, that he believes in the One Who is the Source of all good things, and Who continues His work through the Church. As always, thank you for embracing God’s Plan for Giving. 3:30 to 4:30 PM CCD & Baptism Team RCIA, Bible Study, Pre Jordan, Children’s Liturgy of the Word Special Ministers and Lectors Choir Pastoral Care Aid for Friends Blood Drive CONSIDER ONLINE GIVING Saint Martha Church is excited to announce that you can now manage your giving online! Reconciliation Saturday PARISH INFORMATION AND CONTACTS Comments on Tithing from the pews: “It is amazing that after we started putting the tithing money aside each month, just like money for the mortgage, the telephone and the cable TV, we hardly missed it because it wasn’t treated as spend-able income. And, I didn’t realize it at the time, but I really started to feel closer to my faith and to my church.” 3. Click on the Create Profile button, then 8:15 Monday-Saturday 5:00 PM Saturday 8:00, 10:00, 12:00 As Announced Sacrament of Baptism Baptisms for children are celebrated on the first and third Sunday of the month at 1:15 (except during Lent) and on most Sundays of Easter. Parental instruction is required for the each child. See the priest after Sunday Mass to set up baptism. For adults, contact the rectory to join the RCIA program. These sacraments are usually celebrated at the Easter Vigil. Sacrament of Marriage Couples planning marriage should contact the parish office at least nine months in advance. Weddings are not celebrated during the Season of Lent. Anointing of the Sick Please contact the parish office at the onset of serious illness. On the Sunday before you enter the hospital, please ask one of the priests to administer the Anointing, so that the healing touch of Christ may come to you in this beautiful sacrament. Communion Calls for Shut-Ins The homebound can be visited regularly by the parish priests and pastoral staff and brought Holy Communion on Sunday by special ministers of the Eucharist. Contact Sr. Claire if there is a need. Funerals Upon the death of a family member, contact the parish office so that a priest or other member of the pastoral staff can visit to offer comfort and help plan the funeral liturgy. Arrangement regarding time and dates of funerals are made through a funeral director. “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse that there may be food in my house and try me in this, says the Lord of Hosts. Page 1 - 200 February 8, 2015 ~ 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK 8 February 2015 Dear Members of the Parish Family, As I write this, we have just celebrated Catholic Schools Week; in fact, the snow forced us to move Tuesday’s activities to this week, so we just saw our kids dress up in a most “mis-matched” fashion, and all who teach switched classes for a half hour Tuesday. Yet to come tonight is the faculty vs. eighth grade volleyball game. I fear a rout. My mind keeps drifting back to the 10:00 Mass opening Catholic Schools Week. Over 500 people were there, in response to my invitation, and I am deeply grateful. We showed our visitors from “headquarters” and new families what makes our school special! Now, let’s remember to bring the children to Mass every Sunday, as God commands us! As I reminded you with a follow up phone call, now we have to spread the word! Take a moment to mention why you love Saint Martha School on your facebook page, as well as the Home and School page. We need to toot our horn! No time for false humility here! And, it is most helpful if we just use facebook for positive things. As we always tell you, if you have an issue with the school, you should talk to the principal or pastor. If you have good things to say, tell everyone! I have found that people who use facebook to knock the school, more often than not, are not people who were involved in any way with the school and supportive of the mission of the school or what their teachers are trying to do with their children. They are just complainers who have not the courage to come forward and voice their concerns one on one. They illustrate the sinful uses of facebook. Ignore them. Better yet, bury their criticism with stories of all that is good! Let’s keep positive and keep the good news going! Saint Martha School will always have “high hopes!” Sick Parishioners, Relatives and Friends Patricia Angstadt, Andrew Avizius, John Baranosky, Sr., Christian Baus, Marilyn Belancio, Dolores Bennett, Linda Bianco, Danielle Bobitsch, Elizabeth Bondiskey, Patricia Brennan, William Brody, Michael Buck, Robert Buck, Zachary Canale~Schall, Debra Collins, Laura Comerton, Edward Coughlin, Robert Cowden, Samantha Crompton, Dorothy Delgado, Phillip Delgado, Anna Deltito, Catherine DiCicco, Rita DiFillippo, Frank Dorr, John Forward, Joan Gain, Edward Gallagher, Joan Gallagher, Stephanie Gilchrist, Courtney Rose Gross, Irene Hagenback, Galen Hamel, Deacon Edward Hanley, Joanne Henes, Helen Jachimowicz, Michael Jordan, Colleen Kane, Loretta Ketner, Maryanne Klinewski, Joseph Kubach, Janet Ladzenski, Robert Edward Loftus, Ivy Lynch, Jane Marasino, Susan Marrone, Norma Marker, Tom McCuen, James McDonald, Francis McEntee, Eileen McGranaghan, Margaret McGuigan, Kathleen McKenna, Kevin McHugh, Sr., Mary Meschler, John Montagno, Brian Murphy, J. WEEKLY MEMORIALS The sanctuary Lamp which burns before the Blessed Sacrament reminds us of the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. It would be a wonderful way to memorialize a loved one who now enjoys the heavenly banquet. If you would like the lamp to burn in honor of a loved one, either in Church or in the Rectory Chapel, please send a suggested offering of $10 to the rectory office with the name of the person remembered. We will publish these memorials in the bulletin. In addition, a donation of $25 will help supply the bread and wine which are used for the Eucharist, another fitting memorial. May we, like Saint Martha, always be friends of Jesus. God’s Love, Fr. Al QUICK FINANCIAL FACTS As we grapple with stopping increasing indebtedness and paying our bills on a timely basis, the Parish Finance Council thinks it important that each week you be made aware of some facts and figures we face. This week, 498 adults used their envelopes, with an average contribution of $23.91 per envelope. If 500 adults used their envelopes with an average contribution of $25, we would make our weekly budgeted collection figure of $12,500. Page 2 - 200 There were no intentions for the Sanctuary Lamp and the Bread and Wine this week. February 8, 2015 ~ 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time Mass Intentions for the Week “SPOTLIGHT ON ST. WHAT YOU MAY NOT REALIZE ABOUT SCRIP Each school family is required to purchase an average of $50 weekly in scrip. Considering weekly bills such as gasoline and food, this is pretty simple to do... most families will exceed this minimum when they realize they are piling up tuition credits simply by making a quick stop at the scrip office. Here is what you might not realize: anyone can purchase scrip! You could apply it to a grandchild’s tuition, or a friend or neighbor, or to the parish tuition fund, so a deserving family can get some help along the way. Scrip is one of those quiet fundraisers which can benefit not only our families but our parish. We strongly encourage everyone to sign up today! Why make the trip to the stores at a mall just to buy a gift card? Our scrip office probably has what you want! UNITED WAY United Way contributions may be designated to St. Martha CYO your by referencing #06115. The CYO thanks all, whose generous contributions provide activities and sports for the youth of the parish. Congratulations and Prayers to the parents, Godparents and family of our newly baptized Heather Lee Anna Lopez On February 1, 2015. THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM FOR INFANTS Through Baptism, your children are plunged into the mystery of the Lord’s Death and Resurrection and become God’s own children, members of the family we call Church. You may arrange baptism by approaching one of the priests or deacons after Mass. To prepare for this sacred celebration, parents are required (and godparents invited but not required) to attend a Pre-Jordan Session. At this gathering, held on a Thursday evening at 7:30 in the rectory, one of the parish clergy and a couple who have presented children for baptism give an overview of the ceremony and theology as well as practical suggestions to enhance your experience of the big day. Pre-Jordan Class will be held on the following dates: March 12, May 21 and July 16. Consider coming to the class before your baby is born, when things are just a bit less hectic. PARISH REGISTRATION AND MEMBERSHIP It is important that all Catholics within our boundaries be registered and active members of the parish. Circumstances sometimes change registration status. If you can answer “yes” to any of these questions, you need to be sure you are registered correctly in the parish. (1) Have you moved away from you parental home (not just for college)? (2) Have you recently changed your marital status? (3) Are you living with your parents, over eighteen, and not receiving your own mailings and envelopes? If any of these apply, please call the rectory office to update your registration status. New families moving into the parish can register after any Sunday Mass. Welcome! On Saturday evening February 14 at the Vigil Mass, we will offer a Blessing for all Married Couples who are present, as well as all families who attend together. SAVE THE DATE: COMMUNION BREAKFAST AND HALL OF FAME On Sunday, March 22, our annual Communion Breakfast and induction of the newest members of the Saint Martha Hall of Fame will take place, starting with the 8:00 Mass. Plan to come as a family to honor those whose efforts have built up the parish family over the years. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for children, with a family rate of $25 for a family of four. Past HOF inductees are especially encouraged to attend; wear your medallion. HOME MASSES We will soon be offering the opportunity to have Mass celebrated in your home, for your family and your neighbors, as part of our preparations for the World Meeting of Families. Watch for the sign up opportunity and take advantage of this great source of grace. CHARISMATIC MASS AND HEALING SERVICE The North Vicariate Prayer Communities will hold a Charismatic Mass and Healing Service on Friday, February 13, 2015 at St. Martha Church. Prayer and Praise: 6:45 PM Liturgy: 7:15 PM Celebrant: Rev. Michael Davis If you need any additional information call Bobbie at 215-637-5441 FAMILY POT LUCK DINNER Save the date: On Sunday March 1, at 4:00 PM, we will gather as families for a potluck dinner. Bring enough to feed six people and a dessert. Meet your neighbors and fellow members of the parish family. ARE YOU EXPECTING A CHILD, OR DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS? If so, you may want to stop at the Knights of Columbus Nook in Martha’s Vineyard to pick up a free “Precious Feet” pin for yourself or to give to that person you know. The pin is in the shape and in the exact size of a 10-week unborn baby’s feet, and it demonstrates that the wearer is pro-life. TIME TO BRING BACK THE PALM The ashes blessed on Ash Wednesday as a sign of repentance come from burning the palm from the previous Palm Sunday. Detached from the palm tree, as sin detaches us from Christ, the fronds die. We burn these fronds producing dead ashes, then use the ashes to make the saving sign of the cross, which restores us to life in Christ. Please bring your old Palm back to the basket near the font by the Sunday before Ash Wednesday.
