To promote the welfare of
children in school, home and their
community.
February marks a milestone of so much tradition. On February 2, our students celebrate the 100th day
of school….where have those days gone? We ponder the same for the PTA organization…Its rich 118year history is celebrated in February around the nation with PTA Founders’ Day. The vision of three
women has created one of the most influential voices for our children today.
February also marks the start of our annual support of Relay for Life, a nation-wide event to benefit the
American Cancer Society. At Bevis our families have been so ever-generous with their time and
contributions to this important organization. There are many ways to show our community support for
RFL. Starting the week of February 9, we’ll have Coins for the Cure, new-this-year Neon Dance Party,
Restaurant Night at Sonic and Bevis Mini-Relay for Life, culminating with the main RFL event at
Newsome High School on April 18.
February is also the time of year where PTAs are planning ahead for leadership positions. Do consider
Bevis PTA leadership for the school year 2015-16. If you have an interest, we’d love to hear from you.
Please contact our Nominating Committee at [email protected].
The PTA supports so much at Bevis too thanks to our families, staff and community partners who give
so generously of their time and talents. So far this year, we have 714 PTA members, 245 volunteers
and over 8,535 hours of volunteer support. As always, thank you to all of our
volunteers that help support the work of the PTA to benefit all our children and to the
PTA Board whose energy and commitment are exceptional.
Warmest thoughts,
Susan Barnish
2014-2015 Bevis PTA President

Consider PTA Leadership for 2015-16
The nominating process is underway for our 2015-16 PTA
leadership. Our Executive Board is comprised of nearly 30
dedicated volunteers who help to bring alive the PTA mission
for our Bevis children. Among roles is a Treasurer with an
Accounting background.

Volunteer Corner
“Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to
serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve...You don't have to know
the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A
soul generated by love.” ~Martin Luther King
In the classroom, media center, lunchroom, or a PTA activity, there is no shortage of ways you can
help our students, faculty and staff. Your time and energy are greatly appreciated.
One area that needs more volunteers is the LUNCH BUNCH. This dedicated
group of volunteers spend their time in the cafeteria helping students open
thermos, milk, yogurts and other hard-to open foods. Yes, it can be messy and
loud but it is a fantastic way to interact with the students while they are relaxing
from a morning of instruction. This is a FUN way to see the students. Two to three volunteers are
needed daily with volunteer times from 10:15 - 12:45. Times maybe flexible based on your
schedule.

December/January Volunteers of the Month
Leigh Wolfenden and Shannon Thomson are the amazing Volunteers of the Month for December/
January!
Leigh Wolfenden
Leigh is a Homeroom Parent, PTA Restaurant Night Coordinator, tutor, and is active with the Staff
Appreciation Committee. “I volunteer with the PTA because there are so many valuable and enriching programs, books and supplies, incentives, and events that are funded by the PTA that I
believe enhance the education of all of the students at Bevis. As much as I enjoy helping to raise
funds for the PTA to provide these programs, tutoring students is one of the absolute best parts of
my day. It is such a rewarding experience to provide that little extra practice that helps a child
thrive. I truly enjoy every minute I spend volunteering!”
Shannon is our next fantastic Bevis Volunteer of the Month! She is active with the Media Center,
Lunch Bunch and Staff Appreciation and helps in her daughter's classroom with parties, field trips
and Scholastic book orders. Shannon says that she volunteers to help her daughter feel more
secure at school. "We were new last year and the school gave me so many opportunities to be
involved. Everyone was so nice and caring and working with all the kids is rewarding, so I keep
coming back."
Shannon Thomson
Thank you to Shannon and Leigh for being a part of the Bevis Adventure - enjoy our gratitude with
a Green Boutique gift card.

PTA...118 Years Strong
Every year PTAs nation-wide commemorate the first
convention of the National Conference of Mothers held
February 17-19, 1897 in Washington, D.C. The vision of
our founders – Alice McClellan Birney, Phoebe Apperson
Hearst and Selena Sloan Butler – launched the nation’s
largest organization that advocates on behalf of our
children.
Be a proud member of the PTA by visiting www.pta.org or
join our Bevis PTA at www.bevispta.com.
There will also be teachers volunteering as CELEBERITY
SERVERS to lend their support to this worthy cause. Please
mark your calendar and lend your support, too!
Sonic serves juicy cheeseburgers, hot dogs and chili dogs,
refreshing slushies, and handmade shakes. The nostalgic
drive in atmosphere and the friendly wait staff make Sonic a
real treat for the whole family! Sonic is conveniently located
at 16525 FishHawk Boulevard in Lithia.
