BE ALL THAT YOU CAN BE!
FIND YOUR FUTURE IN PRAYER!
Spriggs, a homeless man in Washington, D.C., remembers his first night on the streets: “I was homeless for the
first time in my life and I was scared. For the first few days I was completely lost and slept in any doorway
downtown. The guys in the park shared their food with me and took me to a soup kitchen. Knowing how confused I
was, the guys took over and took me to a shelter that night. There were a lot of tough looking men in line when we
got there and I was shaking in my boots. Finally they opened the door and let us in and we all got beds. Then they
turned the light out and I was terrified. I was in this room with about a hundred other guys. You could hear the
coughing and turning as they tried to get comfortable for the night. It got a little quieter and then, somewhere from
out of the darkness a voice said, ‘Our Father, who are in heaven…’, and the entire dormitory joined in. At the end of
the prayer, another voice began, ‘Now I lay me down to sleep…’ Even now I get goose bumps thinking of it. In that
minute I realized that God is wherever we are. God seems to be closer to the homeless. You could feel Him in the
shelter like never before. My fears were replaced by peace and I see Him every day in my brothers.”
~ The
Catholic Standard, Archdiocese of Washington, D.C.
The power of prayer to bring someone peace in unparalleled. Back in the years 30 or 40 B.E. (before Einstein) all
rocks were just rocks. Today we know that certain rocks, like uranium, have almost unlimited energy hidden in
them. And if Einstein’s theory is correct, all matter can yield inconceivable energy if we only learn how to release it.
In many ways the same is true of prayer. On the surface prayer appears as devoid of power as rocks did in the age
before Einstein. Some people say, “Prayer is just a pious occupation; if you want to get something accomplished,
then act!” For others, prayer is simply a last resort, “Well, all we can do now is pray.”
A leading cardiologist, Dr. Randy Byrd, conducted an intensive study on 400 coronary patients at San Francisco
General Hospital, and reported his results in a medical journal, the Medical Tribune. He arranged for people to pray
for half of the patients but not for the other half. Those patients who were prayed for experienced fewer
complications. For example, only three required antibiotics, compared to 16 of those not prayed for. And only six
suffered pulmonary edema, while 12 of the others did. Byrd concluded in his report, “Based on this study, I believe
that prayer is effective and beneficial.” Those recruited to pray were Catholics, Protestants and Jews. They were
given the names and conditions of the persons for whom they were to pray, but not told how to pray. And the
persons for whom they were praying were not told.
Scientific studies such as Dr. Byrd’s reveal only the tip of the iceberg about the untapped power residing in our
times of prayer. We should pray not as a last resort, but as the first thing we do, even before attempting other
solutions. Perhaps someday science may affirm without a shadow of a doubt what people since primitive times have
believed: there is power, great power, awesome power, in prayer.

Virtual Pilgrimage of
Lourdes, France
North American Lourdes Volunteers will present a 90minute prayerful VIRTUAL PILGRIMAGE to Lourdes,
France, at St. Mary Mother of the Church, on Tuesday,
February 10, at 7PM, the Eve of the Feast of Our Lady of
Lourdes. During this guided Lourdes experience, you will
immerse yourself in the Gospel Message of Lourdes as given
by Our Lady to St. Bernadette. You will have the
opportunity to touch the Grotto Rock and to experience the
healing grace of Lourdes Water. As part of this spiritual
opportunity to draw nearer to God with Our Lady and St.
Bernadette, you will receive a Eucharistic blessing and pray
the Rosary. A Plenary Indulgence is granted to all the
faithful, under the usual conditions, who attend a Virtual
Pilgrimage
with
North
American
Lourdes
Volunteers. Come and experience the healing grace of Our
Lord Jesus Christ through His Immaculate Mother. Invite
your family, children and friends! Our Lady extends her
invitation to all! The next best thing to visiting Lourdes
itself is a Pilgrimage journey without the travel! For more
information call the Parish Office 896 6400.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS
During Lent the Stations of the Cross will be
held every Friday evening at 7:30PM. All are
invited to attend.

RETURN LAST YEAR’S PALMS TO
MAKE THIS YEAR’S ASHES
Where do the ashes that begin the Season of Lent
come from? They come from the palm branches
that were blessed and distributed during Palm
Sunday last year. Because they are sacramentals, they
must be disposed of in a proper way. Please bring
back last year’s palms and place them in the basket
on the table at the rear of the Church by Sunday,
February 15th. Thank you.
SCOUT SUNDAY
St. Mary's will be celebrating Scout Sunday on
February 15th at the 9:45 Mass. We would like
to invite all Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts to
attend Mass in their Class A uniforms. We
would also like to invite the Girls Scouts. Please
contact Kim Sendelbach at 914.456.3428 for
more information.
Women of the Gospels
This year as part of our Lenten journey, our parish is offering
a scripture reflection on some of the prominent women in the
life of Jesus as seen in the Gospels. The series will be held
in the Church on Monday nights at 7:30PM on Feb. 23, March
2, 9, 16, 23. Included in the evening is Exposition and
Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. If you are interested
in attending and would like to follow the topics, a book
entitled: The Women of the Gospels can be purchased
through The Word Among Us publisher/website. All are
welcome!
A Special Thank You
Thank you for your tremendous generosity and support during
our recent Feeding Our Neighbors Campaign. We are truly
blessed to have such a caring parish here at St. Mary's. Thank
you to Colleen Tempestilli and God's TYM for their help, and
Catholic Charities for coordinating this event. Thank you to
everyone who helped in transporting items to the Food Pantry
and the many volunteers who helped with the sorting and
organizing of the food. There will be pictures on Facebook.
We collected $2,126 - a new record! This will help us
to buy milk, eggs, butter, cheese, etc. This is the 30th
anniversary for the Food Pantry and 19 years that St Mary's has
been part of it. Thank you and may God bless you all!
Bereavement Ministry
"Grieving as a Family" is our next topic. The
meeting will be held on Tuesday, February
17th, at 10:30AM, in St. Mary's Chapel. We
invite you to come, share and pray. Learn how
bonding with family members to seek God's
grace and healing power helps to lovingly
resolve your grief. See flyer for list of monthly programs.
Help us Keep Catholic
Education within Reach!
"Without love, deeds - even the most brilliant - count
as nothing." St. Therese reminds us to do ten small
deeds out of love each day. Come make a St.
Therese bracelet in the school gym on Sunday,
February 22nd, following the 9:45 Mass. The event
is hosted by St. Mary's God's Youth Ministry (GYM)
and the Marian Guild. Continental breakfast. Event is
