SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2015 FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY Dr. Charles G. Adams, Pastor Rev. Charles C. Adams, Presiding Pastor Rev. Kevin N. Taylor, Assistant Pastor Rev. Lurecie M. Stokes, Minister of Pastoral Care Website: hmbcdetroit.org Streaming Live at 11:00 AM Church Building WIFI Access Code: hartford Sunday’s Broadcast will be aired at 7:00 PM on 1340 AM Gospel Radio 18700 James Couzens Highway— Detroit, Michigan 48235 — 313-861-1300/Church —313-861-1285/Office SERVING TODAY LOOKING AHEAD Next Sunday is the last Sunday after Epiphany, January 6. Epiphany is the celebration of Christ’s self-disclosure to the world. On Wednesday, February 18, Ash Wednesday, we will begin the Lenten Seasons of penitence, prayer and preparation for Holy Week, Good Friday and Easter. Next Sunday’s lessons will constitute the ‘bridge that connects the glowing, growing light of Epiphany with the gathering shadows and sufferings of Lent. Next Sunday we will take a deep plunge from Epiphany’s mountain of light into Lent’s dark valley of mystery, misery and need for God. The Scriptures for next Sunday are 2 Kings 2:1-12; Psalm 50:1-6; 2 Corinthians 4:3-6; Mark 9:2-9. First Lesson: 2 Kings 2:1-12. Elijah Ascends to Heaven. In these verses we read of the miraculous ascension of Elijah into heaven. This is the spiritual departure of the holiest man of God in the Old Testament. Elijah stands tall among the spiritual giants of the Hebrew Bible like Enoch and Moses. Elijah with Moses appears with Jesus on the Mountain of Transfiguration. The crisis in the story here is the difficulty faced in the transfer of leadership from one generation to the next. That’s a tough assignment. Who will succeed George Washington, the father of a new nation? Who will come after W.E.B. Dubois, the creator of the social science and empirical analysis of the Afro-America community? Who will follow Booker T. Washington, the builder of Tuskegee University, and the practical, business leader of the race? Who will succeed Martin Luther King Jr., or Jesse Jackson, or Colin Powell or Michael Jordan? When a great person passes away and a disciple must continue the work begun, but not finished, there is much anxiety about the successor. Can the person function in a comparable way? Will the new person possess the authority, power, charisma and dedication sufficient to take the community or institution forward? How will the power of one generation be transferred to the next generation? (1) There must be a very close, friendly, mutually beneficial connection between the old glory and the new opportunity. Elisha must stay close to Elijah, whose wisdom will guide the young man’s use of energy and opportunity. Likewise, the strength, energy and contemporaneity of Elisha will revitalize and reinvigorate the tired Elijah. There must be solidarity and not alienation between the generations. Let us reach out to each other because we need each other. (2) There must be a fervent appreciation of the old by the new, in order to prevent the new generational arrogance that invariably cripples the progress of the young. When we become too arrogant to appreciate the work that was done before we got here, we set ourselves up for failure. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson are able to succeed George Washington because they appreciate George Washington. E. Franklin Frazier, Charles S. Johnson, John Hope Franklin and C. Eric Lincoln can succeed W.E.B. DuBois because they are able to appreciate and applaud DuBois’ thorough-going excellence as a writer, a scholar and a fighter for justice. Robert Russa Moton and Frederick Patterson are able to continue the work of Booker T. Washington because they made an appreciable connection with the mind, heart and motivation of the founder of Tuskegee University. (3) There must be the prayer to God to give to the new leader a double portion of the old leader’s spirit....not the money, not the mantle, not the books, but the spirit. Elijah is so vital to the future of the human race that Elisha dares to pray to receive from God “two times” Elijah’s spirit of love, power and self control. When we think of the greatness of those who served before us— Benjamin CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 1 COMBINED CHOIRS Dr. Joanne Clark Minister of Pipe Organ Earline Vaughn Cynthia Wilson DEACONS: Thomas Williams, Chair Johnny Northern, On Duty Jimmy Johnson, Capt. What can I do but pray hard that a double portion of their holy spirit will rest upon me and upon Hartford? Second Lesson: Psalm 50:1-6. This Psalm sings of a God who “shines forth” as a “devouring fire.” God is so awesome in majesty, so powerful in justice, so intolerant of evil that God’s presence in the world is an ultimate threat against all of us who fall short of God’s excellence. It is only when we recognize the fierce righteousness of the judgment and justice of God that we can be ready to accept the love and mercy of God. We appreciate the mercy of God, because we have sung praises to the judgment, wrath and disciplines of God; and from praise we have fallen prostrate to confess our sin and our need for pardon and redemption.
