THE EAGLE HAS LANDED!
Multiple sightings of a pair of bald eagles perched high in trees along
the Beachville Road near the Quarry Lake have nature lovers all excited. Not only are eagles majestic birds, but their presence speaks to
the vitality of the ecosystem in and around the Quarry Lake itself.
Eagles are at the top of the food chain, which makes them an indicator of the health of other species, even if they contribute to the death
of some species: fish, ducks & other birds. According to baldeagleinfo.com, Bald Eagles can consume about a pound of fish in a minute.
Table manners are not their speciality. Actually, they are not picky
eaters either: they will also eat carrion – road kill, even deer they find
dead. Eagle watching & ice fishing are popular tourist activities in
British Columbia, according to the Star on Jan 17. Caution should be
exercised, especially after the recent thaw, for anyone thinking of ice
fishing. Some would even argue that by doing so you are competing
with the Bald Eagles for their food. Whatever the case, it will be exciting for residents of Oxford County to observe & photograph these top
predators and perhaps to invite friends and family from other places
to come see them too. Add Eagles to Oxford’s tourist attractions.

The proceeds from the sale of the Thamesford Legion building were
donated back to several non-profit organizations in & around the community on Jan 16, 2015 at the Thamesford Trojans hockey game.
Thanks to all that attended. The membership at our last meeting in
April made these recommendations and Dominion Command had the
final say. The members at that meeting included Bob Fisher, Bruce
Gordon, Garry Bennett, Tammy Hooper, Tyler McCready, Kale
Patience, Eric Gledhill & myself. Ted Scott our Zone Commander was
in charge of the proceeding. Ontario Command said they would
donate 66% of the remaining money to the community. We felt that
because most of the money came from this community we wanted it
to go back to this community. Almost everyone has a child, grandchild,
or great grandchild will benefit from this money. Robb Kersel received
a cheque for $1,000 on behalf of the Zorra Girl's Hockey Assoc.
Tammy Spriel & Francine Overeem accepted a cheque for $7,000 on
behalf of Thamesford Minor hockey. Lisa Teeple accepted a cheque
for $8,000 on behalf of Thamesford Minor Baseball. Wade Schaefer
accepted a cheque for $8,000 on behalf of Thamesford Minor Soccer.
A cheque will be donated to Jackie Vandaele who could not attend for
$8,000 on behalf of the 1st Thamesford/Kintore Scouting. Heather
Muir accepted a cheque for $8,000 on behalf of the Girl Guides of
Canada 2nd Thamesford Brownies & Guides. Brenda Cole accepted
a cheque for $8,000 for the Thamesford Skating Club. Steve Glover
accepted a cheque for $8,000 on behalf of the Thamesford Trojans.
Andrea Wright accepted a cheque for $15,000 on behalf of the
Thamesford Calithumpian Weekend. A cheque for $5,000 will be presented to Tammy Hooper on behalf of the 201 Dorchester Air Cadets
by Ted Scott at their next meeting. I trust that all the organizations will
make good use of this much needed money. In closing, I would like to
thank everyone that supported myself and the Thamesford Legion.
There are a few people I would like to thank for all their help over the
14 years I was president and I'm sorry if I forgot anyone. They are
Frances Cowan, Beulah Gardner, Brenda Dunlop, Bill Mott, Bob
Fisher, Bill Gordon, Bruce Gordon, Stu MacPherson, Boris Nosko, Ted
Scott, Garry Bennett, Frank Carter, Mike Koster, Brad Bennett,
Margaret McKenna, Kim & Marty Reath, Steve Gordon, Holly
Burgess, Bobby Gordon, Jim Henderson, Bob Henderson, Tyler
McCready, Rick Ackert, Milne McCorquodale, Tammy Hooper, and
many others, thank you. Gary G Pounds.

From the air, Zorra Township looks pocked & pitted. It’s a landscape
which escapes view somewhat from the roadside because of the
mounded berms hiding the holes in the ground. Based on concerns
over the negative financial impact of pits & quarries on local budgets,
Zorra Township has moved a moratorium on new and expanded operation. The one-year, interim controlling bylaw also provides time for
Oxford County to review and update its Official Plan. These moves by
the township & county are wise. Some breathing room is necessary
while the Oxford Health Board & Public Health Ontario complete their
study of the health impact of air-borne dust and particulate matter.
Similarly, the Ontario government changed its regulations in 2014
which means that local governments need to review that document
and may need to alter their own rules. Finally, the Aggregate
Resources Act, the provincial law governing the interim use of lands
for pits and quarries (and yes, they are supposed to be only temporary, despite what most people would observe), their rehabilitation and
the effect of the industry on the economy, is also under review.

PURPLE HILL: ONLY IN CANADA OPRY SHOW!
HAPPY 100th ANNIVERSARY 4-H ONTARIO!
The Purple Hill Opry was named by Larry Delaney, the owner & publisher of the “Country Music News”, an Ottawa based national country
music newspaper. “The Purple Hill Country Music Hall was founded in
this the Taylor Auction Centre. It is in this setting that country music
memories continue to be born. Hall of Famer & Juno Award winner,
fiddler John P. Allen says he loves playing at the Purple Hill Opry
House. It has become a performing destination for entertainers and
the Purple Hill Country Show Band always has the dedicated desire
to produce that “Special Show!” That is what makes the Boys of
Purple Hill one of Ontario’s premier show bands.” Taylor Auction
Centre, built in 1992, has seen several re-incarnations from household & cattle auctions to weddings & country music shows. The last
cow sale was held in 2010, at that time weddings were competing for
calendar space with the cattle sales. However, the weddings and
country shows have since pushed out the auctions of cows. The
Taylor Auction Centre is now home to many country Opry Shows.

Embro & Zorra Community Centre. By the time you read this, interested members & leaders will have participated in an organizing meeting
for a Community Project in celebration of the 100th Anniversary, but
you can still join us. Brooksdale, Embro II and Thamesford 4-H Clubs
are spearheading a joint project which will offer a variety of ways to
promote, support and celebrate 4-H now. We plan to meet once per
month, formally, but there will be other participation opportunities,
such as parades, building or crafting sessions. Setting our sights on
Embro Fair, September 18-20, as our potential end date, we’ll see just
what a group of fun-loving people can accomplish! For more information, please contact us through Oxford 4-H.

COUNCIL NEWS from MARIE KEASEY
Council met twice in January, one of which was a budget meeting. At
Council’s regular meeting, an Interim Control Bylaw was passed
which provides for a moratorium on new or expanded sand or gravel
pits and/or quarries south of Rd 74 for a period of 1 year to allow for
a comprehensive policy review on the current extraction provisions of
the County’s Official Plan. The review is expected to be completed in
the 1 year period but that time frame can be extended for another year
if needed to complete a more thorough review with respect to the
effects of cumulative impacts. Hopefully, this action will get the attention of the Provincial regulators, so that they listen to the concerns of
municipalities & their residents. Council Committees’ memberships
were confirmed with Ward 2 representatives: Becky Bates, Derek
Collins & Don Weir on the Zorra Recreation Advisory Committee
(ZRAC) and Jeff Brown as the Ward 2 representative on the Zorra
Community Policing Committee. I also serve on ZRAC, along with
Councillor Marcus Ryan & Mayor Margaret Lupton. Councillor Doug
Matheson is assigned to the Policing Committee. Thanks to everyone
who applied. In advance of the budget meeting, the projected 2014
deficit of some $32,000 was carried forward to the 2015 budget. In
addition to the deficit, the Ontario Partnership Fund monies were
reduced for 2015 and the police costs have increased & the uncollected taxes for 2014 was slightly higher than 2013. Approximately
$800,000 in taxes were uncollected in 2013 & 2014 which is more
than 5% of the total taxes levied in 2014. This also affects the 2015
budget in a negative way. On the positive side, the building department more than paid for itself & the 2014 operating surplus of
$64,268.90 was transferred to the Building Department Reserve as
per the Ontario Building Code Act. This reserve can be used if at some
time there is a decline in building permits & for equipment. Interim tax
bills have been sent for payment by Feb 27. Zorra Township has been
a leader in recycling for many years & Council supported 2
Community events taking place on April 11 at the Thamesford
Recreation Centre & the Embro Community Centre. The Lions will be
hosting a scrap metal, vehicle battery & electronic waste depot at
TDRC and TrashapaloozAHA4 (a giant swap meet) will take place at
the Embro Centre. Check out the Village Voice for more information &
empty your sheds, basements, etc & participate in these great opportunities to reduce landfill waste. A thank you to the Lions for picking up
the Christmas trees that could be pulled/towed from the snow banks.
Some 70 trees were made available to the Township for chipping.
Others that were stuck will be removed when possible. Many thanks
to Gary Pounds & the Thamesford Legion group who shared proceeds
of the sale of their building to 10 local non-profit groups, including
Minor Sports, Air Cadets, Scouts, Guides, the Calithumpian
Committee, in addition to Parkwood Hospital. I am sure the monies
will be put to good use & in memory of the work the Legion has done
over the years. February is Valentine’s Day & the Family Day Holiday.
Once again the Lions are hosting activities, a free skate, hay rides,
physics & other displays & a silent auction from 2pm on Mon, Feb 16
at the Thamesford Arena. There will also be a spaghetti supper for a
small fee at the hall. Hope to see you there. Have a good long weekend with Family Day.
Respectfully submitted, Marie Keasey

The phone calls are frequent. The mail comes often. Charities, filling
in the gaps for services which governments no longer seem to support, beg for our donations in many ways. These same charities then
send you mail with gifts of various kinds to thank you for your support
of essential programs. If, like most people, you have a stack of
address stickers, gift tags & greeting cards from these grateful groups,
then there must be times you wonder what to do with them. This was
not the issue for local residents opposed to Walker’s dump proposal.
Rather, they took donated Christmas greeting cards and wrote messages to Glen Murray wishing him a happy holiday and us a dumpfree new year. The mail gets through! Apparently, the greeting cards
full of our hopes for safe drinking water, clean air & a safe environment
went directly to the Environment Minister’s office. Many a letter has
come back from the Ministry, most of them the work of civil servants,
who for all we know were the last to set eyes on people’s letters and
comments. In the case of the cards, though, it was different. The
Minister’s office received them, read them and noted who had sent
them. The fact that the Minister received the cards proves that our
efforts to get the Minister’s attention through letters, faxes, emails,
cards, phone calls and other communications has been successful.
Wouldn’t it be great to know just how many pieces of correspondence
Glen Murray has received from Oxford County? Just in the New Year,
it’s been thousands! Keep up the good work!

Tony Kelly
Tony Kelly & his wife Pat came from Ireland in 1960 &
settled on McCarty Street, in Thamesford. Tony taught
electrical studies & was a soccer coach at high schools in
Ingersoll & Woodstock. From 1967, Tony was involved in
local politics, beginning when Thamesford was a police
village with its own governing trustees who dealt with
North Oxford Township, to the south & East Nissouri
Township, to the north. Ted Nancekivell & Harvey Beaty
were the two other trustees. They saw the amalgamation
of the Thamesford Water System & the integration into
the Township of Zorra. Tony went on to become
Thamesford’s councillor on Zorra Council & served until
2000 as a concerned & capable representative. Tony was
involved with the construction of the swimming pool in
1973 & the arena construction in 1975. He is a faithful
member of the Thamesford Lions Club & a long time
columnist & photographer for the Dorchester Signpost &
the Ingersoll Times.
This monthly feature is brought to you by the Village Voice as a way to get
to know your community better! When the new Thamesford Library &
Resource Centre opened, the Wall of Recognition featured many people who
built our community. Each month we feature one of these people.

WASTE DIVERSION IS GOOD FUN
Anyone who attended the first 3 giant swap meets called
TrashapaloozAHA would tell you they were fun. What isn’t good about
meeting friends & neighbours, finding great things you need, then getting them for free while knowing you are helping our environment.
April 11 will be even more good fun than past rounds. Zorra Township
will co-sponsor the event at Embro Community Centre. Meanwhile,
the Thamesford Lions will be holding a scrap metal, vehicle battery
and electronic waste collection. In the past, TrashapaloozAHA organizers have always looked for ways to divert those things too. Scrap
has been collected & sold. Electronic waste has been donated for
retrieval or recycling. What a great way for TrashapalooZaha to support the continual work of Lions to help the community! All scrap, vehicle batteries and old computers or televisions, will be given to them to
help them fund their programs. Both organizations are interested in
education around waste diversion. After all, what we do now becomes
our legacy. Nobody wants us to be buried in trash, our resources
wasted or our energy exhausted. The collaboration between the 2
events inspires us all in new efforts to clean up the environment, clean
out the shed or garage & to clear the yard. The organizers of the
Embro Event have made one other alteration, a name change: This
April 11th, the event’s title will capitalize the “z” in TrashapalooZaha,
making the mark of Zorra more evident.

“Everyone should know what to do
and where to go to get out safely.”
Install smoke alarms on every storey & outside sleeping areas.
Develop a home fire escape plan & discuss it with the entire family.
Show everyone 2 ways out of each room, if possible.
Check that all exits are unobstructed and easy to use.
Determine who will be responsible for helping young children or
anyone else that may need assistance.
Choose a meeting place outside, such as a tree or a lamp post,
where everyone can be accounted for.
In smoke, get low & go under the smoke to the nearest exit.
Call the fire department from outside the home.
Once out, stay out. Never re-enter a burning building.
You may have only seconds to safely escape your home.
Practice your home fire escape plan!

CONFERENCE PLANS TO STOP THE DUMP
Dynamic, well-known speakers are already committed to coming to
Ingersoll on May 1 & 2 to help Oxford residents in our fight to stop the
dump. In addition to Graham Flint of FORCE, a group which won an
exciting decision to preserve their community, Temara Brown of
CRAND will speak on her group’s efforts to make air breathable.
Downriver community group, the London Council of Canadians will
contribute a workshop led by renowned artist and activist Roberta
Cory. You may have seen her giant water-snake a year ago leaving
the Ingersoll Arena and heading for the Thames River. Just confirmed
too is a speaker from the Ontario Soil Regulation Task Force, Ian
McLaurin. His group, an umbrella group of community members, is
working to ensure that the public is aware of the “real dirt on dirt” and
that the provincial government will do something effective to restrain
the unregulated dumping of contaminated soils on prime farmland, in
parks and other public places. The conference will also feature local
dump-fighters who will lay out alternatives to dumps. Sustainable
practices and strategies for our community to preserve its wonderful
places will be highlighted. The Oxford Coalition for Social Justice
heads the planning group for this conference event which will kick off
Spring with inspiring ideas, solidarity in our community & beyond, as
well as practical strategies for us to achieve our long-term goal. For
updates visit the Coalition’s Facebook page.
THAMESFORD GUIDING
January was science month for the girls as the Guides worked on their
Chemistry badge and the Brownies worked on their key to Science &
Technology. The Sparks joined us as we explored chromatography
and polymers & made our very own slime, created a few chemical
reactions & explored pH. As we turn the calendar to February we are
looking forward to celebrating World Thinking Day and the founding of
Girl Guides as well as some outdoor winter fun. Also we’d like to
extend a HUGE thank you to the Thamesford Legion for the generous
donation to our units.

ART IN THE HEART
February is a shorter month & daylight hours start to lengthen a bit.
It’s a good time of year to take in a few art shows or attend art classes. The Ingersoll Creative Arts Centre has a list of “classes” on their
website creativeartscentre.com. And while you are there, click on
“what’s on where”. You’ll see Art in the Inn is at the Elmhurst Inn in
their gallery hall displaying current works by featured artists within the
area. Next check out the woodstockgallery.ca Here too displays are
up and art classes for children & adults available. Check their winter
hours first. Have you been to the Westmount Mall in London recently? If not, you may be in for a pleasant surprise. It is called For the
Love of Art London Ontario. It is located on the 1st floor within a store
location that has been wondrously converted to a place to view & purchase creations from an unlimited variety of art, from artists in this
area. What a wonderful idea to find art in a mall. But enough of looking at other folks art. Valentine’s Day is just ahead. Pullout some
watercolour paper or a small pad of acid free card stock and create a
Valentine for someone special in your heart or even someone in a
nursing home that you know needs a visit. You could even make a
couple or more! For ideas, well, you could draw with pencil and add
red coloured pencil enhancements, or pull out your water colours and
let the colours flow. What about some Zen Tangle style art with black
pens on white paper with red accents!! Enjoy creating the art in your
heart during these winter days. If you have any comments or questions please contact me at [email protected].

MUSEUM MUSINGS
Calling all sports fans! Sports has played a significant role in many
peoples' lives over the years & the Ingersoll Museum is currently honouring that role with its newest exhibition entitled "You're A Good
Sport". On display until Apr 18, this exhibit features numerous photographs & artifacts from the museum's collection as well as items representative of past inductees of the Ingersoll Sports Hall of Fame.
Come see the track suit worn by Olympic diver Ken Armstrong during
the 1976 Montreal Olympics and his Commonwealth Games silver
medal, or the autographed baseballs from different provincial championship teams which hailed from Ingersoll. If you or someone you know
is a member of the Ingersoll Curling Club, or are planning to attend the
Provincial Tankard as a fan, this display will be of interest. Feature
items of the exhibit are the exquisite Thomas Seldon Trophy which
was first presented to the Curling Club in 1905, and the wooden carrying case for curling stones. There is even an antique wooden curling "stone"! Do the names Goose, Bummer and Lefty bring back
memories? If they do, you will want to visit the display. If these
monikers are unfamiliar to you, then you should drop in to find out who
these people were. Ingersoll & area has a rich history when it comes
to sports and it encompasses more than just the Ingersoll Reems, the
Ingersoll Marlands and the South Oxford Rural League, or the Climate
Control Juniors or all the many men's & women's baseball teams.
"You're A Good Sport" also looks at horse racing, roller skating,
lacrosse and even boxing and bowling. A visit to the museum may
bring back memories & spark some thoughts of other people or teams
which should be inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame. Nominations
will be accepted this year for the next round of inductions this fall. For
more info on this display & museum activities, call 519-485-5510.
WHAT HAPPENED TO JAKE?
My neighbor's dog, Jake, a 10 year old British Black Lab dog wearing
a collar & tags was hit by a vehicle on the evening of Dec 22/14 on
Oxford Rd 96 in Harrington. Jake did not come home on the evening
of Dec 22/14. On Dec 23/14, one of the owners came home from work
in the early afternoon. Jake was not home. Usually, he is at home.
The owner went to look for Jake in the neighborhood. Not far from
their residence, Jake was found on Oxford Rd 96 in a ditch. Jake's
stomach & lungs were filled with water from the ditch. Jake was very
weak from the injuries & tried to take a sip of water. He was unable to
swallow the water properly. Jake was hit on the evening of Dec 22nd
and not found till the next day, Dec 23rd, in the early afternoon. My
husband came home from work that day & spoke to the owner, Rick.
We live directly across from the owners. I would like to find out what
happened on Dec 22/14. Was the accident a hit & run? or did someone hit Jake and not realize he was hit? Jake was a very nice dog.
Sociable & kind. He introduced himself, a few days after we moved in
to our home in Harrington. Jake would come visit our dog Feynman
on a regular basis. If anyone witnessed the accident or may have
information regarding the accident. Please contact me at
[email protected] or the local OPP. Would really like to know
what happened. Jake was a really nice dog.

ZORRA TOWNSHIP ~ GRAVEL PITS
The Council of the Township of Zorra passed an Interim Control Bylaw to place a moratorium on new or expanded gravel pits & stone
quarries for a one-year period in the Township of Zorra located south
of Rd 74. The by-law will prohibit the Township from processing any
new zone change applications, new or expanded gravel pits, or stone
quarries while a policy review is carried out on the current mineral
extraction provisions in the Oxford County Official Plan. This section
of the Official Plan considers policies & review criteria to be applied to
proposals for new or expanded quarry and sand & gravel licenses.
This includes ensuring compatibility with the natural environment, settlement areas & agriculture. Township Council has taken the step of
passing an interim control by-law after experiencing frustration with
the lack of coordination & management of aggregate extraction
through the approval regulator, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources
& Forestry. A recent provincial review of the Aggregate Resources Act
failed to address how the government would assess the cumulative
effects of noise, dust, truck traffic & the overall social economic issues
of impacts of concentrating multiple aggregate operations in a small
geographic area like those found in aggregate rich regions of Zorra
Township. The Township of Zorra is home to 48 licensed sand, gravel
and quarry operations that cumulatively cover approximately 2,730.95
ha (6,748.08 ac) of land. Taken together, these 48 licensed operations
are approved for a maximum annual extraction of over 25.4 million
tonnes of material. For comparison, this area would cover over 27%
of the area of the Town of Richmond Hill and over 10% of the City of
Mississauga. The policy review study is expected to be completed
within a one-year time frame as permitted in the Planning Act. The
study time frame may be extended for an additional year if needed to
complete a more thorough review. “The Township recognizes the significant role the aggregate industry has played in Zorra’s development. However, Council’s priority is to put into place a review process
that takes into account the various impacts on citizens that live in
close proximity to multiple aggregate operations. We realize that Zorra
is an aggregate rich municipality; however, our citizens have placed
their trust in us when it comes to protecting their health and well being, and
we are obligated to act in their best
interests.” - Margaret Lupton, Mayor of
Zorra Township. “The Township has
been lobbying the government since
2006 to put a process in place that
takes into cumulative impacts: we had
hoped the review of the Aggregate
Resources Act would have done so. It
is our position that valid concerns
raised by Council were ignored, which
left the Township no choice but to carry
out its own review that aims for more
stringent development standards.”Ron Forbes, Deputy Mayor of Zorra
Township.

CHALMERS UNITED CHURCH
“Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the ends of the earth
I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is
higher than I. For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against
the foe. I long to dwell in your tent forever & take refuge in the shelter
of your wings. For you, God, have heard my vows; you have given me
the heritage of those who fear your name. Increase the days of the
king’s life, his years for many generations. May he be enthroned in
God’s presence forever; appoint your love & faithfulness to protect
him. Then I will ever sing in praise of your name & fulfill my vows day
after day.” Psalm 61
Have you ever felt so overwhelmed with life... with daily tasks, with
meetings, with deadlines, with stuff? In Psalm 61 David is crying out
from a place of darkness, distraught & defeated. David calls out to
God, the rock to which he refers, David looks to God to help him overcome his strife. These past 4 months at Chalmers United Church in
Kintore, have been very busy, very active & very different for many of
us. Rev Doug Peck has been on a parental leave, which put on our
plate, the task of filling not only the pulpit on Sundays, but the tasks
to which we were accustomed to Doug looking after. Not to say, it hasn’t had some very busy moments, but we turned to our Rock, we
prayed together, we planned together & we called on God to help us
with all that we had to do. Here we are in February & looking back
over the past months, we are different, we are stronger, we have overcome what some may have thought impossible, we have put our feet
on the path that Jesus calls us to follow and we are ready for new
adventures, new connections, new relationships & most importantly
we have discovered that the words to the song is true “I am the
church, You are the church, We are the church together; all who follow Jesus, all around the world; We are the church together”. Our lives
at Chalmers are filled with so many blessings, and we have much to
be thankful for. We will look ahead to Lent, Easter, and the many seasons of the United Church with the hope, peace, joy & love that we
discovered in our Advent journey. May you feel the blessings of our
Lord Jesus Christ in your life, and know that we at Chalmers welcome
all of you and look forward to having you with us on our journey.

WHERE ARE WE?
It’s about time we knew where we are in the MOE’s process for
Walker’s application to put a dump into Carmeuse’s quarry near
Beachville. While all indications in the Code of Practice were that the
Minister’s decision would have been made quite a while ago, it
appears that it will fall into the new Minister’s lap. Look out, Glen
Murray. At time of press, no decision on Walker’s Terms of Reference
has been made public. A decision, when it comes, will merely tell us
what needs to be studied in an Environmental Assessment by government and independent scientists. It’s pretty easy to figure that out: air,
land and water. So, it is a wonder that the decision to reject Walker’s
proposal’s threat to all of these hasn’t happened yet. Scientists have
been engaged for a long time now in examining the effects which a
dump will have on our environment. Further, after much insistence
from local councils and residents, Ministry of the Environment staff
have added a requirement for a Health Impact study. That too should
have been a consideration from the start. Allied groups opposed to the
dump remain hopeful that the Minister will not be, in the words of the
official policy, “satisfied” by the documents from Walker. That could
and should lead to an outright rejection of their plan. If not, the Minister
has the right to ask for a far more thorough examination of the impact
on environmental and human health. Such a study would involve a
major expenditure of time, money and energy by scientists, things that
could be saved if the Minister chooses to believe his own staff, community group’s scientists and the tens of thousands of letters from
people in Oxford and across the province. Glen Murray, “No” is the
way to go on this one!

RESTORE ~ HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
The Habitat for Humanity ReStore located at 1058 Parkinson Rd in
Woodstock, is open to the public & sells quality new & gently used
building supplies, home furnishing, appliances & décor. Shopping at
the ReStore is tax free & is a socially conscious decision, as revenue
generated is used to fund the administration costs of Habitat for
Humanity. That means 100% of money donated to Habitat goes directly to building homes for low-income families. As well, shopping at, or
donating used items to the ReStore is an environmentally conscious
decision, as much of what is sold is product that would otherwise end
up in a landfill. Shop, donate or volunteer by calling 519-421 0003, and
help to end poverty in your community! Store hours are Tue, Wed, Fri

ROED ~ UNIQUE VALENTINE’S GIFTS
I know it’s what you’ve all be thinking about, isn’t it? In the midst of a
cold & frosty February, we pause to celebrate the relationships we
have with those we love. You’re probably wondering what Valentine’s
Day has to do with economic development. February 14 is another
one of those days that we can influence our local economy by shopping close by. When we buy in Oxford County, we keep dollars circulating in our community. We support business owners who then go on
to spend money within the community, including paying employees as
well as sponsoring community events & activities. The Rural Oxford
Economic Development Corporation would like to challenge you to
shop locally this Valentine’s. Avoid shopping online or driving to a larger urban centre to find that perfect gift. Whether it’s Tavistock,
Thamesford or somewhere in between, we want you to get creative &
think of the unique & wonderful gift ideas that are produced or sold
locally. Buy close by, shop locally, and see the difference that it can
make in your community.
KEY CLUB SPAGHETTI DINNER
WHAT DO YOU ENVISION?
I was talking with my daughter the other day about some visions a
Team within our church had been brainstorming towards
Westminster’s future. Her response: “Well, it’s about time we did
something new again.” “What?!” was my exasperated reply. We just
hired a new Child & Youth Minister last summer. We just finished
another major production last fall – in the process we bought a new
fridge & we partnered with 2 new groups to help our community & the
world beyond (Sakura House & Japanese Christian Ministries.) We
put in 2 new furnaces. We’ve seen an influx of new young couples &
families. We invited the community in for the first time for soup before
the Christmas parade & hot chocolate and carols afterwards AND we
put a whole 22 voice, 9 piece orchestra cantata together for Christmas
Eve. “What do you mean it’s about time we did something new
again?!” “Well, most of those things we’ve really always done – plays
aren’t new; it’s maybe a new person, but we already had a Youth
Minister; furnaces & fridges are just the cost of doing business and
we’ll always have Christmas! It seemed like a while ago, we were putting stages in the sanctuary or we were hanging TVs for projection or
taking pews out to put chairs in. We were making new positions or
doing new programs. There always seemed to be something NEW.”
My daughter’s picked up on something. It’s the difference between
Vision & Program. Churches should always have a sense of Vision –
really, anyone should – individuals, families, businesses, service
clubs, etc. But once a Vision is achieved, it becomes a Program –
something valuable to keep going in most instances, but it’s not the
new thing you’re being called to do – you need a new Vision. Vision is
defined as ‘the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination
or wisdom’ (I love that!) or ‘a mental image of what the future will or
could be like.’ The word ‘Vision’ comes from the Latin videre which
means ‘to see.’ In the church, then, Visioning means trying ‘to see’
what God sees for our future & the future of the world. It means trying
to discern what God has planned & becoming eager participants in
that plan – no easy job! Not easy, but exciting! Not safe, not routine,
not maintaining status quo, but embracing a mission that is scary and
meaningful. After all, if it isn’t at least a little bit scary, is the dream really big enough to be God’s?! So what is next for Westminster? I have
my ideas, but I don’t know for sure. That will take work. It will take the
members of our church dreaming dreams larger than we’ve ever
dreamed before. It will mean listening to the needs & wants of our
community. It will mean we need to hear from you – come share your
Vision with us! It won’t be easy & it might be scary, but I can promise
you it will be exciting, life-giving & liberating! Come catch the Spirit
with us! “In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all
peple. Your sons & daughters will prophesy. Your young will see
visions. Your elders will dream dreams.” ~ Acts 2:17. Rev Mark
Marshall, Westminster United Church: not your average, old church –
come see what the excitement’s about! Check us out at thamesfordunited-church.com or call us at 519-285-3212.

RV CORNER
Looking at the calendar and realizing that in 8 weeks we are going to
be getting ready to get our campers out of storage, de-winterizing and
getting ready for another season. With the RV show season in its
prime, it is time to start telling yourself or probably safer asking the
better half, should we trade in for a new trailer? Have we grown out of
our trailer, have the kids decided that going with mom & dad isn’t cool
anymore? Remember that leak last year that we just couldn’t fix & the
showers seemed to be colder than what they should be? These could
be an indicator that it is time to shop. With a growing list of manufacturers putting out new floor plans, there is a floor plan that will fit anybody’s needs. In our trailer lines we have 28 floor plans to choose
from & most of which we have in inventory. Once again and it may
seem old news, but Caveat Emptor (buyer beware) do your homework
before you go & do not get caught in the old, this price is only good
today, this is our last one, this is $10,000 off, really freight is $1,600,
if you sign here we can get you a price or everyone is approved!
These are some of the games you will run into in the stores where it
is high pressure to get you to sign on the spot. Do your shopping, then
come & see the dealer that will tell you the honest & straight up facts,
it may cost us a few deals by being honest, but you will not see the
bottom of our heels running away when you come back to the dealership. I was always taught honesty & integrity brings repeat business
and also word of mouth as campers sit around the campfire swapping
stories. Come & see us at the London Boat, Fishing and Outdoor
Show Feb 20-22. We also now have in stock our exciting new addition
for trailers, boats, cabins the ZAMP solar products. I don’t know why,
but as I am writing my mind always drifts off to thoughts of food. Here
is a fun & delicious recipe for breakfast over a campfire or on a grill.
Egg McCampfire: ingredients, English muffins, eggs, cooking spray,
ham or cooked bacon, cheese slice or shredded cheese or what ever
else is in the fridge & a metal muffin tin. Spray the muffin wells with
spray or oil, crack an egg into each one & break the yoke, add any
other ingredient and cook over med heat for 2 minutes or until the egg
is done to your liking, toast your English muffin on the grill, place the
egg on your muffin and top with cheese, ham or bacon and any other
toppings and enjoy, but wait, don’t forget the ketchup, my good wife
thinks it is my third hand or I am trying to cover up her cooking.
Happy Camping, Dave
