Cold Spring Record
Rockville News
continued from page 14
January 25th at the Fire Hall.
All the truck repairs are up to
date, purchase of some new
equipment done and a $500 donation from Coldspring (Granite)
will be used for new equipment
also. A big thanks to the company for their generosity.
The main topic of planning
was the Polar Plunge which is
set for Saturday, February 14th
at Pleasant Lake, 9am (set-up)
for Fire Department members.
Registration is at 11am and the
actual jumping begins at 1pm.
All members who will be volunteering are asked to call Chair
Fireman Brian Knapek 320-4921512.
The Department is looking for
three new members. Five have
applied and the interviews are
set up for the last week in January.
First Responder Classes for
about a dozen of the members
are scheduled for February 23-26
from 7pm-11pm each night at
the Fire Hall. The regular
monthly meeting has been
switched from the 23rd to Feb.
9th (instead of a drill). The
monthly drill will be held on the
23rd, this allows class attendance for those who are scheduled.
The Fish Fry will be the next
big project. It will be at the
Rockville Parish Center on Friday, March 20, 2015. Tickets remain at $9/adults and $5/kids.
The Raffle is the actual fund
raiser. Members will be out and
about selling tickets soon.
The rental policy of the
Rockville Parish has changed.
The rent will be $500 instead of
the $250 of the past. The Members discussed this and will get
some prices, etc from others to
discuss for the future location of
the fish fry.
Election of Officers and the
subsequent OK by the City
Council resulted in the following:
Fire Chief-Rod Schaefer, 1st Assistant-Don Simon, 2nd Assistant-Tim Massmann, Sec/Treasurer-Andy Struffert and the two
Captains are Keith Massmann
and Mike Schlangen.
The Department Rescue
Squad responded to seven rescue
calls this past month and two
fire calls.
40 Days for Life
Are you ready? This spring
the 40 Days for Life Campaign
again follows the days of Lent,
which is early, therefore the volunteers are likely to have some
chilly and snowy weather! February 18th through March 29th,
can see a lot of snow in Central
Minnesota. Never the less. Committed pro-lifers are signing up
for an hour or more of prayerful
vigil at the Planned Parenthood
Facility on East St. Germain
Street in St. Cloud, from Ash
Wednesday until Palm Sunday.
The Vigil consists of walking,
carrying or wearing a pro-life
message poster, and praying, no
sidewalk counseling, no confrontation, just a prayerful presence to witness to all that all life
matters. The preborn baby in it’s
mother’s womb matters, so does
the Mom and the Dad, all life
needs to be protected by law and
respected by everyone. That’s the
message.
The more people that participate, the more the message is noticed. The Vigil runs 7am to 7pm
weekdays and Saturday mornings. There’s always a coach who
t brings the posters each morning, you are needed to stand up
and be counted for life! The
Rockville, Luxemburg, Pearl
Lake and Farming Communities
take care of the hours on the five
Tuesdays of the Campaign (February 24, March 3, 10, 17, and
24) please consider picking one of
Tuesday’s hours, call Tudie at
252-3017, to sign up. This is a
peaceful, prayerful vigil. Park at
St. Augustine’s, behind the Ace
or on the side street, (no parking
in Planned Parenthood’s parking
or on St. Germain. No leaning
against the Planned Parenthood
building, watch for bicycles, they
use the sidewalk too. Call for
more information or to sign up.
Anyone may join in at anytime,
the more, the better.
Of course, everyone is also
urged to pray for these 40 Days,
to save the lives of the unborn, to
change the laws of our country
and to protect all life!

This Business Of Farming
by Roger Strom — Part of the Morning Show on KASM Radio
email: [email protected]
The Minnesota federal district court has dismissed a lawsuit brought by the American Farm
Bureau Federation (AFBF) and the national
Pork Producers Council (NPPC) against the
EPA to protect the rights of farmers and the release of their personal information.
This issue began in July of 2012 when the
EPA was forced to drop a plan that would have
required cattle producers to provide detailed information about their operations. The purpose
(according to EPA) was to monitor the larger operators as to how they handled manure and other management practices.
The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association
along with the Department of Homeland Security testified that the plan was not only beyond
EPA’s authority, but it could lead to increased
terrorism and threaten our food biosecurity programs. There was also a concern that the information would be used by anti-animal agriculture activists to target and harass cattle, hog
and poultry producers.
Despite being told they “couldn’t and shouldn’t” the EPA moved ahead with the project, using state water agency records of livestock operations without telling those agencies about
plans to develop a searchable national database.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, several “antianimal agriculture” groups including the Natural Resources Defense Council, Earth Justice
and the Pew Charitable Trust were able to get
the information gathered by EPA under the
Freedom of Information Act. The groups now
have data on farms in 30 states including the
home addresses of farmers, geographical coordinates, their phone numbers, e-mails and “would
you believe” the names of diseased relatives.
AFBF and NPPC sued to prevent the EPA
from releasing farmer information in Minnesota, California, Idaho, Nevada, Oklahoma and
Washington. But the federal district court dismissed the lawsuit based
on the conclusion that as long as the farmer's
personal information can be found somewhere
on the Internet, EPA’s distribution of that same
information does not result in any injury to the
farmer. In the courts opinion, a farmer with a
public Facebook page used to promote the farm,
or whose information could be found via search
engine or any state regulatory website in any
form, has no right to sue to stop the federal government from compiling and distributing that
information. AFBF President, Bob Stallman, reacted to
the court’s decision saying, “Farmers, ranchers
and citizens in general should be concerned
about the court’s disregard for individual privacy. This court seems to believe that the internet
age has eliminated the individual's interest in
controlling the distribution of his or her personal information. We strongly disagree.” Two years ago, when this issue was revealed,
Lisa Jackson, outgoing Chief of the
EPA said in an interview, “If I were starting
again, I would from day one make a much
stronger effort to do personal outreach in rural
America. Had I known that these myths about
everything from cow flatulence to spilled milk
could be seen as ‘The EPA is coming to get you,'
I would have spent more time trying to inoculate against that.”
It’s unfortunate her “newly acquired insight”
was not passed on to her successors.

starts, the “last” day to eat as
much as you want (Fat Tuesday)
and party extravagantly (Mardi
Gras). To the best of my knowledge there isn’t a big celebration
locally, in Central MN, most of
this kind of partying is done privately. Those who really wish to
celebrate go to New Orleans!
They have a whole week of parades, parties, music and festivities of all kinds. Lots of people go
to Mardi Gras at least once in
their lifetime, just to experience
the costumes and the crowds! All
the hotels and motels are reserved weeks ahead. There are
Mardi Gras exhibits in famous
museums are open telling the story of festival origins, traditions
and costumes. The place where
most of the floats are constructed
is toured by thousands. There are
parades every night for two
weeks preceeding Fat Tuesday.
Most of us will be satisfied to
watch the reports about all this
“fun” on our TV news and hope
for the safety of all the revilers.
There were more than 60
hold-ups in November in
the French Quarter which is the
most colorful, but also could be
dangerous. Everyone is advised to
travel the streets in groups for
their safety. The police force is
aided by State Troopers and
Sheriff’s Departments to help
keep everyone safe and still have
a great time.

change them afterwards.

USO
The USO and its many citizen
supporters has been a pillar of
support for our combat troops, as
they have fought and continue to
fight, in some of the most desolate and dangerous places on
earth. The USO has provided the
much needed relief from the relentless stress of combat and
brought them a taste of home in
places that are alien and barren.
The USO also helped launch
the critical initiative to aid in the
recovery of the 50,000 troops who
were wounded in Iraq and
Afghanistan, and the thousands
more who are suffering from invisible wounds, such as post-traumatic stress. The USO has two
Warrior and Family Centers. One
at Fort Belvoir ,Virginia and the
other at Bethesda, Maryland.
Both centers have a broad array
of programs for wounded heros
and their families and caregivers.
The USO’s work is not over.
Troops are working in West
Africa in the fight against Ebola,
in Iraq, supporting the air campaign against ISIS and all across
the globe. We currently have over
200,000 military personnel serving overseas, where they stand
ready to confront terrorist groups
wherever and whenever they
threaten us. At the same time,
the work with and for wounded
Warriors continues.
Thanks to the 180 locations
around the world, the USO is
uniquely able to serve our wounded troops from field hospitals at
the front, to evacuation centers in
Germany, to stateside hospitals
and throughout the recovery
process.
The USO Centers continue to
serve as a much needed “home
away from home”, for our troops
away from the daily stress of
duty.
The USO also has a Sesame
Street Experience. It tours
around the world to help families,
especially their young children,
cope with the challenges of moving to new and strange lands, as
well as the anxiety of being separated from parents and loved
ones.
Funding all these programs
continues to depend on the good
citizens of the country.
The USO asks that we stand
with
America’s
wounded
Warriors and join them by being
a sponsoring member. For more

Mission
Our busy lives don’t seem to
have much time for “mission”, especially those in foreign lands,
but there are those who do make
the time for those across seas.
Just a short review of a few of
them will reassure all of us that
the Catholic Church does, indeed,
include a healthy and enthusiastic “mission” zeal.
First, our thanks to Fr. Teddy
Niehaus, OFM (1939-2014) who
spent decades of his ministry in
the mission fields. Another “missionary” who has recently died,
Brother Clarence Nuener, OSC,
had served the people of a tribe
called “Asmat” for 43 years on the
southwest coast of the Island of
New Guinea. He used his carpentry skills to build schools, churches, and a mission house; and his
mechanical skills to direct a large
boat and motor repair shop, all
the while serving as pastoral
minister for several thousand native Papuans. He, along with Fr.
Virgil Petermeier, started
Women’s and Youth’s bible study
groups that continue to grow.
How about the “lay” missionaries. Janel Heinen from Opole,
who was sent to Homa Bay,
Kenya and consequently promotes the “Child Survival
Project” through which young
adult orphans are able to attend
post secondary education in order
to obtain jobs that will adequately support them and their siblings. She continues on the
Diocesan
and
Parish
Partnerships with the people of
Homa Bay.
There’s also Peter Steele, from
Becker who volunteered for the
Maryknoll China Program,
(spend one year in China teaching English), his year turned into
seven years! They weren’t allowed to be “active” missioners in
the sence that they couldn’t publicly speak about their faith, but
living a Christ-centered life
would draw in the local people.
Another missioner,Fr. Bob
McCahill of Maryknoll, has just
celebrated his 50th Anniversary
of serving in Bangladesh. Much
of the population is Muslim and
Hindu and Fr. says, although all
their encounters are not “sweet”;
there are ample opportunities to
witness our faith in the midst of a
multitude who are witnesses of
their faith to the Christians
among them. Service to the poorest and neediest is his mission.
There are countless others
who “serve” Christ as missioners,
all are dependent upon those of
us who pray at home for their efforts and who donate money and
support sales to pay for these
necessary activities of the church.
For more information, go to
www.stcdio.org/mission.
Pipeline Spill
The largest saltwater spill of
North Dakota’s current energy
boom was noted by the EPA last
week. The spill of nearly three
million gallons, generated by oil
drilling of salt water that leaked
from a ruptured pipeline that operator Summit Midstream
Partners LLC detected on
January 6, 2015. The spill happened in Marmon, about 15 miles
from Williston and primarily contaminated the Blacktail Creek,
although it also reached the bigger Little Muddy river and the
Missouri River too.
Saltwater is an unwanted byproduct of oil and natural gas
production that is much saltier
than sea water and might also
contain petroleum and residue
from hydraulic fracturing operations. Some previous spills have
taken years to clean-up.
Underflow dams which allow
freshwater to flow freely underneath are being built in case the
water levels rise. The spill (water) is being pumped from several locations along the Blacktail
Creek, it’s being transported to a
well site to be injected underground. Saltwater is usually
pumped underground for permanent “storage” from a network of
pipelines that extends to hundreds of disposal wells in the
western part of the state.
Democratic state lawmakers
have promised to file legislation
Rockville News
continued on page 20
Page 20
Rockville News
continued from page 19
to mandate additional monitoring
and safeguards for such
pipelines. It appears to be similar
to what Republican lawmakers
tried to pass two years ago. It
was defeated then, after resistance from oil companies that
claimed it would be too expensive.
With oil prices lower now, how
can it be economically feasible to
spend more? But then, the clean
up must cost money too? There’s
lots to think about in Dakota.
Taxes
While Dakota is discussing oil,
and all the side effects, Minnesota’s Governor Dayton has proposed raising taxes to pay for
road and bridge repairs/maintenance. While everyone would like
to have more money to fix our aging roads and bridges, not everyone wants to see higher taxes. Although, his proposal would put a
6.5% tax on gas at the whole sale
level and hike license fees and a
sales tax for the Twin Cities. No
one is saying what that would do
to the retail cost of gas that
everyone is enjoying at less than
$2.00 per gallon. Not sure if people would be willing to do that?
The GOP Transportation Plan
(having campaigned on “no new
taxes”), calls for $750 million
over the next four years. It would
transfer $200 million from the
State’s projected $1 billion surplus for road repairs, which
would require spending almost
all of that special fund. The rest,
the GOP thinks, can be found in
budgetary savings.
One idea that sounds very
good is to research how to build
roads and bridges more inexpensively and maybe to last longer?
That sounds good.
World Day for Consecrated
Life
In 1979 Pope John Paul II set
up a day of prayer for women and
men who answered the call to
consecrated life(sometimes called
“religious” life). This celebration
is attached to the Feast of the
Presentation of Our Lord in the
Temple (February 2nd), also
known as Candlemas Day. The
day on which candles are blessed
symbolizing Christ is the Light of
the World. So too, those in consecrated life are called to reflect the
light of Christ to all people. This
year the celebration was transferred to the following weekend,
February 7th and 8th, in order
to highlight the gift of these persons to the whole church.
Pope Francis announced that
this entire year be filled with appreciation for consecrated life.
All around the world special
prayers, ceremonies and activities are planned. In our Diocese
several religious communities
opened their doors to the public
on Feb. 8th. Various local people
participated in the day-long celebrations at the Poor Clare
Monastery in Sauk Rapids. While
their enclosure doors cannot be
opened to the general public, the
Poor Clare sisters invited and
welcomed many for prayer in the
Chapel for Mass, Adoration,
rosary and prayers plus special
times for slides and visiting with
sisters in the parlor. The singing
of the Divine Mercy Chaplet was
especially inspirational after the
Holy Hour. Vespers closed the
day at 4:30pm. Many were welcomed during the afternoon
hours in Onamia to meet the
Crosier Fathers and Brothers,
tour the priory and celebrate Vespers. The public was also welcomed to learn about the Benedictine Sisters lives of prayer and
service and tour the sacred
spaces at St. Benedict’s
Monastery . Many local parishes
were served by the Benedictine
Sisters for over a century in the
Catholic school system and are
personally appreciative of their
experience with the Sisters.
St. John’s Abby also invited
the public for a series of free presentations on monastic culture,
spirituality and history. Their
next presentation is at 7pm on
March 15th at the Abby Chapter
House, where Benedictine Father
Jerome Tupa will talk about “The
Path of a Monk- the Path of an
Artist.”
The Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls are planning various
ways to celebrate this year of
Consecrated Life, watch for news
of pending festivities and celebrations throughout the coming year
across the Diocese.
Terrorism
Japan is the latest victim of
ISIL/ISIS, then Islamic State, as
it tries to come to grips with and
mourn two of its citizens purportedly killed by the Islamic State.
The latest video apparently
Cold Spring Record
shows the beheading of Goto, the
previous video showed Goto
holding a photo of Yukawa’s
body. Both are presumed dead,
killed by ISIS, after trying to get
$200 million ransom for these
captured Japanese, one a journalist, the other in a private security
company.
Although all the world mourn
with the Japanese, some question
their President’s (Abe) terrorism
policy. His announcement of $200
million in non-military aid for the
fight against the Islamic State
during a visit prior to the ransom
threat, was questioned. Abe said
the aid was meant to convey
Japan’s strong commitment to
fighting terrorism, fostering
peace, stability and preventing
the expansion of terrorism. He
stated, time and time again, that
there would be no ransom paid,
these are criminals. Japan is determined to pursue them and
hold them accountable.
A more cautious approach is
being tried by Jordan, they renewed their offer last week to exchange an Al-Queda prisoner for
a Jordanian fighter pilot, Lt.
Muath Al-Kaseasbeh, also being
held by ISIS, but insisted on
proof that the pilot is alive. There
has been no response from ISIS.
VEC
There’s a Veterans Encounter
Christ Retreat in March (27-29)
in Sauk Centre. All Veterans are
invited! VEC is a three day retreat weekend based on the Pascal Mystery, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Come and
experience the message of Christ
thru music, discussion, talks,
prayer, Scripture, Liturgy and
celebration. The retreat has
three parts described as three
days: Die Day is centered on the
death of, Rise Day is a joyous celebration focusing on the Resurrection and Go Day is spent exploring our call and how we will
go forth to carry the message of
God’s love.
Sleeping accommodations are
