George Walker
It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of George Walker.
George was Chris Walker’s father and he passed away early Monday
morning. George will be buried next Monday morning in Leeton. May he
rest in peace.
Our Children
The children have settled into class very well and there has been a quick
focus on their learning. Many thanks to our very capable staff, who give
so much of themselves to our children and learning community, on a
daily basis. Today Kindergarten are enjoying a well deserved rest.
Swimming
We wish our swimming squad the very best of luck when they
participate in the Annual Deanery Carnival in Griffith on Friday.
Parent Information Evening
Parent Information Evenings will be held in Week 4 on Tuesday 17th
February. Meetings will be held in each classroom. The teachers would
love to see as many parents there as possible.

Friday Afternoon Assembly
A brief assembly is held every Friday afternoon in the hall at 3pm for children and staff to pray
together and tor the Teachers to pass on any general information to the children. Parents and
families are most welcome to attend.
Active After Schools—Sporting Schools
This year the Active After School Program will be replaced by a new program called Sporting
Schools. The following information was taken directly from the Sporting Schools website.
Why Sporting Schools?
After 10 years of the Active After-school Communities (AASC) programme, an evaluation identified the
opportunity to deliver a more effective national junior sport participation initiative that would allow
more schools to get involved and help more children develop healthy, active lifestyles.
With a $100 million investment from the Australian Government, Sporting Schools will build on the legacy and success of the AASC programme.
Sporting Schools is a part of the Australian Government’s commitment to tackling increasing levels of
obesity and foster a lifelong passion for sports among children. The programme will be delivered by the
Australian Sports Commission (ASC).
When does it start?
In February 2015 schools will be able to access a new web portal and register to be part of the network.
A first grant funding round will be open for applications in May 2015 and the first practical sessions will
begin in late July 2015.
Pilot sport activities across Australia will be announced at the start of the school year. If your school
registers, it may have the chance to be involved.
How does it work?
Sporting Schools draws on the successful elements of the AASC programme, along with a range of new
features to connect schools with their local sporting community to deliver quality sporting experiences to
students.
The programme offers:
an annual funding round to provide up to three terms of sport-based activity for your students
easy access to quality online sporting resources and lesson plans
the opportunity for you to decide when those activities are best hosted in your school — before, during
and/or after school
a continued connection with the Playing for Life philosophy, where children are encouraged to have fun
by focusing on ‘skills not drills’
access to details of trained community coaches within your local community
links to local sporting clubs to enable your students to continue their sporting journey
professional development opportunities for your teachers and your preferred deliverers.

Ash Wednesday
Next Wednesday 18th February will be Ash Wednesday. Year 1 to Year 6 will attend the Parish
Mass at 9.30 am. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of six and a half weeks of repentance,
fasting and abstinence in preparation for Easter. The ashes are a symbol of being sorry for things
we have done wrong and want to get rid of forever. It is also a reminder that we all come from
ashes, and to ashes we all will return. The Ashes come from last year's Palm Sunday, they are
then mixed with holy water. When people go to church on Ash Wednesday, the priest dips his
thumb in the Ashes and uses it to make the sign of the cross on each person's forehead. The
Catholic Church sets guidelines on age regarding Lenten rules. Technically, Catholics between
the ages of 18 and 59 are obligated to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition, all
Catholics 14 years old and older must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all
the Fridays of Lent.
Deanery Mass
Tomorrow evening the Deanery Mass will be held at St Joseph’s Church Leeton. All members of
staff from the MIA Deanery will come together to celebrate the beginning of the School Year.

Kinder News
Kindergarten have been settling in well in their new
school. We have been learning school routines and
have enjoyed playing on the playground and going to
the canteen for the first time. Yesterday we had a bus
safety visit with Linda, Chris, Col and Constable Nick.
We received pretend bus passes and took a ride on
Col’s bus to practice our new safety skills. Tomorrow
Kinder will visit Fr Neru at Church.
Guitar Lessons 2015
We will be conducting guitar lessons again this term. There is a little change this year and
the lessons are now on a Tuesday. I hope this suits you all OK but if it is not suitable please
let me know and I will see what I can work out. We will start on Tuesday 10th February.
Could anyone interested in learning this year please contact me with your preferences this
week so we can work out group and individual lessons.
New Students - if you are interested in learning guitar you must be a student from Year 2
or older. You will need your own guitar to learn on. (Custom Music has a really good array
of guitars and is excellent at fitting students with suitable guitars for their age)
If you are interested fill out the sheet below and send it to the office so I can arrange a time
to suit.
This term our guitar lessons are for 8 weeks.
Our group lesson rate is $15 a lesson. Groups are usually 4-6 per group.
The individual price for lessons is $25.

Air League Meeting
The Narrandera Air League, a youth organisation, is starting up again with an Interest
Meeting planned for Friday Night February 13 at the Air League Hall at the Narrandera /
Leeton Airport commencing at 7.30pm.
Commanding officer Bob Manning said there was now enough leaders to hold meetings
again. Air League is a youth organisation like the Scouts, but encourages an interest in
aviation. Air League dates back to before the Second World War and is open to boys 11
years and over. Mr Manning invited parents and children to attend the Interest Meeting.
He said the league helps give boys direction. “It prepares them to become leaders in their
field. Boys in the past have become pilots in the Air Force, helicopter pilots in the Army or
engineers. One is a manager in charge of freight as Sydney Airport”
The Narrandera Air League is open to both boys and girls but there are currently no
female leaders to run girls activities in Narrandera. There is no doubt the cadets who join
enjoy this avenue of education which benefits their long term future.
