The Advanced Textile Research Group at the university has used 3D knitting technology to produce seamless and breathable sleeves, worn between the residual limb and the artificial limb, which prevent sweat from being trapped in the prosthesis. Seamlessness is also important, as seams in a sleeve can cause discomfort and pressure necrosis – damage to skin tissue caused by sustained pressure. Professor Dias’ research team received nearly £66,500 from the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) under a Centre for Defence Enterprise contract to develop the concept and prove its worth to the Ministry of Defence (MOD). At the end of a long shift in December 2012, PC Amanda Renshaw and PC Steve Pridmore were called to a domestic assault report at an address in the isolated village of Elkesley. On arrival they found a severely injured man lying in a semi-unconscious state. Their efforts to comfort the man and administer first aid were complicated by the fact the attacker was still in the home. Whilst helping the victim the officers were able to keep the attacker - a man with severe mental health issues - away from the scene in a separate room until the ambulance arrived 50 minutes later. Sadly the injured man died from his injuries but the officers were praised for their efforts which prevented any further attacks and would undoubtedly have helped comfort the victim in his final moments. www.southwell-racecourse.co.uk 01636 814481 | [email protected] *Terms & conditions apply. Robert MarcinkiewiczSzukowski, 27, was recently found guilty of killing 21-yearold Bogdan Nawrocki. He was sentenced to a total of 27 years for the murder which took place in a house in Osborne Street, Radford. In a three week trial Nottingham Crown Court heard that Bodgan was a vulnerable man who had been trafficked from Poland to Nottingham in March 2013. Although he led a chaotic lifestyle, working different jobs and living at numerous addresses in the Radford area, Bogdan was extremely close to his sister Monika Iwanska and visited her and her family every day. But his visit on Sunday 5 January 2014 was to be the last time they saw each other. Monika then reported him missing on 11 January 2014 and despite a large scale police and media operation Bogdan was never found. In April 2014 forensic officers discovered significant traces of Bogdan’s blood during a search of a house in Osbourne Street. It was accepted in Court that he had been subjected to a prolonged and violent attack. Bogdan had previously been living at the address with Marcinkiewicz-Szukowski but a row over house rules and an item alleged to have been stolen by Bogdan escalated. The court heard that Marcinkiewicz-Szukowski along with others, who have not been charged, carried out a prolonged assault on Bogdan. The amount of blood lost had caused Bogdan’s death and he had been hidden away, believed buried somewhere. Despite numerous appeals and a £5,000 reward Bogdan’s body has not been found. Detective Chief Inspector Tony Heydon, who led the enquiry, said: “Although he was trafficked into the country Bogdan Nawrocki’s death was not at the hands of those who abused his vulnerability. Instead he was inhumanely murdered at the hands of people he would have considered acquaintances, who planned the attack and laid in wait for him. Out in Education is a student-led not-for-profit originating at The University of Nottingham, which delivers workshops, lessons and assemblies about what it means to be LGBT at primary and secondary schools. By discussing stereotypes, cyberbullying, and relationships, the project aims to educate and combat homophobia at a young age. Out in Education is the brainchild of Lucy Wake, who set up the not-for-profit organisation in 2013 while still a student at The University in Nottingham. Lucy said: “We have had heard from teachers who are now comfortable to come out in their school environment without fear, or even just tackle the endemic bullying. We have been specifically mentioned in Ofsted reports and are looking forward to expanding further this year.” Out in Education received Cascade funding, a grants programme supported by donations from The University of Nottingham’s alumni and friends. The project is fast expanding beyond Nottingham. They now have a base at Nottingham Trent University, with another at Loughborough University to be opened this month. The project operates by setting up bases at Students’ Unions across the UK to create a network of students each going out into their own communities, with the aim of 20 bases by the end of 2015. Sarah Lee, Achievement and Equality Manager, Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “It was an absolute pleasure many victories so far as an organisation: we have received emails from teachers saying that pupils have become empowered enough to create a LGBT Network of their own, some have come out, others are just more tolerant. I’ve also working with Lucy Wake and the Out in Education team. Lucy’s enthusiasm is infectious and her commitment inspiring. She was a real hit at our conferences this year and I think delegates learned a lot from what she shared. The work is so desperately needed.” FOSTERING IS CHANGING WHERE YOU ARE Kirkby In Ashfield Kirkby in Ashfield could soon be known as the place to buy ‘England’s Best Sirloin Steak’ as local butcher ‘Barlows’ has made it through to the final stage of the inaugural ‘EBLEX Quality Standard Mark Excellence Awards 2015’. Mansfield Mansfield District Council is introducing changes to Council Tax discounts on empty properties. From 1 April 2015, full Council Tax on empty properties that are substantially unfurnished will be payable after three months instead of the current six months. A discount of 75% will apply for the first three months. It is estimated that this change will affect around 600 properties. An Empty Council Tax Premium of 50% will also be charged when a property has been empty for two years or more. This means that the owner will be required to pay the full Council Tax, plus an additional 50%. This will affect an estimated 200 properties. The changes follow on from a consultation carried out by the Council at the end of last year, when questionnaires were sent out to owners who currently receive a discount on empty properties. A random sample of Council Taxpayers was also canvassed to establish their views on the proposals. 5 Squash the Myths, Know the Facts I can’t foster if I’m single Park Foster Care is currently looking for new foster carers across Nottinghamshire and East Midlands. Inequalities In Child Safeguarding Why are children from poor neighbourhoods more likely to be subject to a child protection intervention than those living in better off areas? And is deprivation the primary cause? Researchers at The University of Nottingham are involved in a major new research project to study inequalities in child welfare systems across the UK. Nottingham is among six universities which are partners in the new Centre for Communities and Social Justice (CJS), led by Coventry University and funded with £550,000 from the Nuffield Foundation. The project will compare disparities in child safeguarding in England with Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales where child welfare systems and intervention rates differ. It will then explore potential reasons for the inequalities in rates across the UK. Since 2008 there has been an 86 per cent increase in the number of children being investigated over child protection concerns in England. And the number of children spending time in care each year has increased by 10,000 since 2010. CALL 01159 314380 100 Years Old And Still Keeping Fit! She will help decide which of the photographers’ images best capture the essence of the group and reward the winner with a £200 gift voucher of their choice. Not only will the winner be rewarded with vouchers but they will also get the chance to have their photographs showcased in national press, Skipton Building Joanne Coates, last year’s photography competition winner said: “The Grassroots giving photography project is a great platform to get involved with. It’s an innovative and inspiring process for community groups. Once I found out about grassroots I couldn’t wait to be involved, the whole experience was a great. I loved the diversity of the winning groups, and the chance to see the difference that the money truly made to their community projects. Since winning last year’s competition I’ve had three exhibitions in London, hosted two photography fairs and shot season previews for L.K Bennett. Newstead Abbey is holding a Volunteer Recruitment Open Day on Saturday 21 February from 11am to 3pm to recruit volunteers to help out at the beautiful historic house and park. The event is a chance for people to drop in throughout the day and learn about volunteering opportunities. Museum staff and volunteers will be on hand to show people around the site and answer any questions. There are a range of volunteer roles to choose from, in the Abbey itself as well as in the gardens. Volunteers are always needed for the family events to support educational activities and tours. We couldn’t function without the help of the business community, and cannot thank the team at Russell Scanlan enough for choosing Nottinghamshire Hospice as their charity of the year.” Opening Up On Mental Health Nottingham City Council has recently been inviting colleagues to learn more and open up about mental issues, as part of an innovative ‘Story Shop’ event marking Time to Talk Day. In an event run in conjunction with Nottinghamshire Healthcare, the County’s mental health, intellectual disability and community physical health provider, people who have had mental health issues and experiences have been sharing their personal stories on a one to one basis to increase understanding about mental health, encourage conversations and tackle stigma. City Council employees booked in to have a session with the storytellers, getting an opportunity to listen to their experiences and ask any questions. The City Council has made improving mental wellbeing in Nottingham a Health and Wellbeing Board priority, and signed the Time to Change pledge in December to tackle mental health stigma as an organisation. Nottinghamshire Healthcare service users have been be talking about a range of different experiences and conditions including dealing with depression, and psychosis. The initiative aims to engage primary and secondary schools in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire with the charity’s Saving Lives Helipad Appeal, which is raising £3 million to build an onsite helipad at the East Midlands Major Trauma Centre at Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC). ‘We’re targeting schools in Nottinghamshire as that’s where the QMC is located, and schools in Lincolnshire because that’s where many of the air ambulance patients come from,’ explains Daniel Craggs, Senior Community Have Your Say On NHS In Nottinghamshire Fundraiser at Nottingham Hospitals Charity. ‘We want to get the message out there that the new helipad at QMC will serve patients from across the East Midlands, and particularly rural areas such as parts of Lincolnshire.’ Nottingham Hospitals Charity is asking each school that takes part in the competition to raise as much as they can for the Saving Lives Helipad Appeal. The three top fundraising schools will be rewarded with a visit from the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, giving children the chance to look inside the helicopter and ask the pilots and paramedics questions about their work. Recent research, jointly undertaken between renal research staff at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) and Alison Musgrove, advanced podiatrist for Health Partnerships, found that 20% of diabetic patients on dialysis have had a lower limb amputation, with half of those having lost at least one leg. Many of these patients were found to have mobility problems which meant a struggle to access community podiatry services, which aim to treat foot problems and ultimately prevent amputation. Combined with the large time commitment of having dialysis 3 or 4 times a week, sometimes for up to 6 hours a day, they were finding it difficult to attend community clinics, or arrange convenient home visits, in order for them to have vital podiatry care. Lisa Metcalf, specialist podiatrist for Health Partnerships, suggested the new model of care at an Invest 2 Lead programme, the Trust’s highly regarded Leadership Development Programme. The idea attracted sponsorship from Paul Smeeton, Chief Operating Executive of Health Partnerships, and a trial began in October. The new service is offered at Kingsmill, Lings Bar and City Hospital, in the dialysis units run by NUH. The trial is due to end in February, at which point the impact of the service will be reviewed, and patients will again be invited to give their views. If it is found to be effective, podiatry on the dialysis units may then become a permanent fixture! #nottsinfocus Let The Romance Commence…! The company, which is building 30 quality three and four-bedroom houses on the development, off Briar Lane, said that its Radleigh One Move initiative is proving to be a success with customers who are already on the housing ladder. One of the most comprehensive schemes of its type available, it takes much of the legwork out of the selling process because Radleigh’s own staff deal with estate agents on behalf of their buyers, arranging valuations, marketing their existing property and keeping them abreast of developments. Then, when the sale goes through, the company will offer to pay the estate agents’ fees, legal fees and even stamp duty. At the same time, Radleigh will give buyers further peace of mind by reserving their chosen plot for them, meaning that their dream home is taken off the market until their property is sold. Alison Mansfield, head of sales and marketing at Radleigh Homes, said that the Radleigh One Move scheme is proving to be extremely popular at Berry Heath, with a number of buyers having already signed up and reserved their sites. And she said that sales are further being helped by the Government’s Help to Buy scheme, whereby buyers can move in after putting down just a five per cent deposit, with the remaining purchase price met via a mortgage and a 20% loan from the Government. It means that buyers’ monthly repayments can often be less than the cost of renting an equivalent property, with one of Radleigh’s three bed Milldales, for example, potentially costing as little as approximately £415 a month. Mrs Mansfield said: “Nothing beats the feeling of preparing to move into a new home, but that feeling is tempered for many buyers by the fact that selling their existing property can be a complicated and stressful process. “We introduced our One Move scheme for just that reason and it is proving to be extremely popular at Berry Heath, where we have had a lot of interest from people who already own homes elsewhere in Mansfield and want us to look after to be able to offer them to our customers.” Buyers have eight weeks to sell their homes once an asking price has been agreed but if they do not Brailsford their sales on their behalf. “I would certainly expect us to be looking after plenty more sales as we move into 2015. The theme of the 2015 art competition is ‘All Seasons In Bloom’ to encourage young artists to explore the garden, park or countryside all year round. The photography competition theme is ‘Nature And Encouraging Wildlife In The Garden’. Both competitions are again sponsored by Capital One, whose staff will help to shortlist the entries. The competitions regularly attract over 1,000 entries from young people who live, go to school or are members of community groups in Nottingham. Stuart Mather, Community Relations Manager for Capital One, said: “We are proud to support the competitions and hope they will encourage children to take inspiration from plants, flowers, fruits and wildlife all through the year. It’s a great way for young people to showcase their creative talents. Over the years we have had some really fantastic entries that have gone on to be used for posters, Christmas cards and publications. The winners in 2012 even had the opportunity to meet the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during their visit to the city.” Shortlisted pictures and photos will be displayed at the open day at the Nottingham City Council Nursery, at Woodthorpe Grange Park, on Saturday May 9th when the public can vote for their favourites. Winners will receive gift vouchers to be presented at an awards ceremony at the nursery in July, and the winning pictures will go on to represent the city in the East Midlands in Bloom competitions. Photographer Tracey Busking For Donations Janet Richie and Sue Lockwood from Bingham Methodist Church presented staff at QMC’s Major Trauma Centre with a cheque for £802.29, to be donated to Nottingham Hospitals Charity’s Saving Lives Helipad Appeal. Janet and Sue raised the cash by busking outside the church at Christmas time – Sue played the piano whilst Janet sang – and by encouraging members of the congregation to donate money instead of sending Christmas cards. The Saving Lives Helipad Appeal is raising £3m to build an onsite helipad at QMC, to help speed up transfer times for critically-injured patients being taken to the East Midlands Major Trauma Centre by air ambulance. You can find out more at www.nottinghamhospitalscharity.org.uk. Whitefoot is also offering a photography workshop for one of the winners and their classmates. Councillor Malcolm Wood, Chair of the Nottingham in Bloom Working Group, said: “Thank you to Capital One for their ongoing support, which enables these popular and worthwhile competitions to continue and grow. I am delighted to see that many schools in the city have inspirational gardens that have provided the children with a wealth of opportunities to produce excellent paintings and photographs. In recent years we have been particularly pleased to receive so many photos featuring wildlife, which have required patience as well as skill on the part of the photographers.” For an entry form, visit www. nottinghamcity. gov.uk/ nottinghaminbloom or call Nottingham in Bloom on 0115 915 2733. The Reds confidently stretched their magnificent unbeaten run that began on November 1 and Walton’s 81st-minute strike saw his side to the familiar feeling of success at The Nigel Doughty Academy. Youth Cup ties and he had the opening opportunity of the game carved out by Worthington as the hosts began productively. The centre back stretched to connect to an outswinging corner to head just wide of Tadhg Ryan’s post. The Terriers sit top of the league table but they were struggling to have a say in the early stages and Thomas fired over following threatening attacking play from Walton. The latter’s forward partner Gerry McDonagh continued to cause a problem with his back to goal, scrapping with Huddersfield’s centre halves to allow time for midfield runners Matty Cash and Otim to move up the pitch to cause damage. The visitors grew into the game as the half went on and Fraser Horsfall will have wished he had the opportunity again, failing to get on top of a header after being left free from a corner. Diminutive winger Jack Courtesy of www.nottinghamforest.co.uk Kevin MacDonald made five changes from the starting line-up that impressively dismantled Burnley in the FA Youth Cup last 16 tie at The City Ground in late January, with Andreas Karo, Jermaine Worthington, Elvis Otim, Luke Thomas and Walton given the chance to shine. Alex Iacovitti has started in all three of Forest’s FA From Notts To Wembley Notts rider Keith Stewart is raising money in the Football League challenge. He is back raising money for Prostate Cancer, but this time he’s added an extra 200 miles to the challenge held in June! Stewart will be riding alongside Nottingham Forest fan Graham Hubbard and they will start their challenge in the city centre, riding down to Wembley. There they will join over 200 cyclists from around the country to start the 150-mile trip to Amsterdam, so a total of an incredible 350 miles in four days! www.nottscountyfc.co.uk Boyle played in galloping full back Jack Senior who rifled across the face of the goal to send out a warning before Reds keeper Tim Erlandsson had to be at his best to deny Danny Kane’s effort. The second period brought a livelier away side looking for revenge after MacDonald’s men ran out 2-1 winners in the reverse fixture back in early December. Decision-making looked like it would decide the encounter with both sides lacking in the final third when it really mattered. McDonagh drove forward and unleashed an effort from 20 yards that went over before the Irishman squeezed a shot away that was saved after good work on the right-wing from the energetic Otim, which typified Forest’s frustrations. But just as the match looked as if it would fizzle out towards the end, the in-form Reds showed gritty character to believe in their attacking abilities and took the lead. www.nottinghamforest.co.uk Kyle Dixon Departs Notts County Notts County have agreed to terminate the contract of young midfielder Kyle Dixon. Dixon, who came through the youth ranks at Meadow Lane, signed a new contract with the club last summer but suffered an ankle injury in pre-season that limited his involvement in the first team early on in the campaign. On his return to fitness the 20-year-old headed out on loan to Boston United, where he caught the eye with some impressive displays for the Vanarama Conference North side. Dixon will now be free to sign for another club after returning from a loan spell with AFC Telford and terminating his deal with Notts, which was due to expire at the end of the season. Everyone at Notts County would like to wish Kyle Dixon well with his future career. 32 E: [email protected] | Tel: 01159 313879 Published by Nottinghamshire in Focus Limited, 53a Main Street, Burton Joyce, Nottingham NG14 5ED.
