The Choices We Make and Crossing the Goal
Guidelines for Fast and Abstinence during Lent
Abstinence is a penitential practice consisting of refraining from the consumption of meat and is
to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age or older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday,
and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be
observed by all Catholics between the ages of 18-59 years, on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
One full meal is allowed on these days. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may
be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating
between meals is not permitted, but liquids and medication are allowed. If a person is unable to
observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition.
Stations of the Cross
The Stations of the Cross provides us with an opportunity to meditate on the passion
and death of our Lord Jesus Christ. This devotion will be held at St. Alphonsus every
Friday at 7:00 p.m. during Lent beginning on February 20. On Good Friday, April 3,
Stations will be held at 3:00 p.m.
Lenten Meals at St. Alphonsus
Lenten Meals will be served on Friday evenings in the St. Alphonsus parish hall from February
20 through March 27. Serving starts at 5:15 p.m. with clean up at 6:30 p.m. All meals will meet
the Church guidelines for abstaining from meat on the Fridays during Lent. On February 20,
March 6, and March 20 the Knights of Columbus will serve fish, slaw, fries, and hush puppies.
On February 27, March 13 and March 27, the St. Therese Altar Society will serve soup, salad,
and bread. While there will be no charge, donations will be accepted to off-set the cost of the
meals. Carry out meals will be available. All are welcome!
40 Days for Life Spring Vigil
40 Days for Life is a community-based campaign that draws attention to the evil of
abortion through the use of a three-component program: prayer and fasting, constant
vigil, and community outreach. The spring constant vigil will conclude on March 29,
Palm Sunday. For more information, go to www.40daysforlife.com/memphis.
Adoration Literature
The parish has provided materials to help enhance your time in adoration before the Blessed
Sacrament. Adorers are welcome to keep the small pamphlets, but we ask that anything marked
St. Alphonsus be returned to the narthex at the end of your time in adoration. If you are interested in having your own copies, please contact Maureen Stephens. Thank you!
