EMERY: [email protected] A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PASTOR We are part of a society that relies so heavily on insurance. We take out medical insurance, car insurance and house insurance. People insure themselves against all sorts of thingseven against bad weather during vacations with travel insurance! Among all, the most important and most frequent insurance is life insurance. However, even life insurance cannot protect us from one day dying and passing on from this life. Life insurance is obviously intended to ensure that our dependents or family receive some compensation in the event of our death. Yet, we know that we will all one day end our lives here on earth. I wonder: what kind of insurance do we take to ensure that when our lives end we will experience eternal life with God? Such insurance is not available from any agent or company. It comes from living lives faithful to the Gospel. It comes from trying our best each day to be more like Jesus who tells us: "Whoever believes in me, even though he die, shall live," When we take out such "spiritual insurance" we will experience the Kingdom of Heaven. In Christ, Msgr. Emery THE SACRIFICIAL GIVING OF OUR PARISHONERS February 9th Week 32 Y. to Date Collection $12,449 $468,690 Budgeted $14,468 $465,112 THINK ABOUT IT "There's a choice you make in everything you do. So keep in mind that in the end, the choice you make, makes you." Kelly Bacchus Peace and Justice Committee President's Day This Monday there will be only one Mass at 9:00am in the Upper Church due to the President's Day holiday. The parish office will be closed on this day. Everyday Evangelizing for Everyday Catholics: Catholic lay people have a unique role ( one in which clergy and religious really have little part) in bringing the vision of Evangelization to all facets of today's secular world. No group touches the wide range of human experience as does the laity, and none so influences the values of a culture. Frank DeSiano, CSP Ash Wednesday Schedule This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. The schedule is: Masses with distribution of Ashes at 7:00am, 9:30am (school Mass) and 12:00. Prayer Services with distribution of Ashes at 4:00pm and 7:00pm. Archdiocesan Annual Appeal A reminder to make your pledge to the Archdiocesan Annual Appeal to help support the many works of the Archdiocese in our four counties. Stewardship is sharing our time, talent & treasure 620-1 2015Lenten Regulations 1. The days of both Fast and Absinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence. On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals, which if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. 2. The Obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence “substantially”, or as a whole, is a serious obligation. 3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. 4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, February 22, 2015 to The Solmnity of the Most Holy Trinity, May 31, 2015. They are: Liam Clayton, Skyler London Abigail Marchman, Rourke Augustine Norris, and Andrew Rodrigue. We congratulate their parents, godparents and families. Our next Baptismal Celebration will be held on Sunday, April 12, 2015 Stewardship Reflections “Brothers and sisters, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.” - 1 Corinthians 10:31 Do a quick check of your priorities. Where does God rank in that list? If He’s not first, you have some work to do. Putting God first in everything helps develop the attitude of “I am grateful for the gifts God gave me” instead of “I want more”. For most people gratitude leads to generosity. Reflections on the Catechism “Jesus hears our Prayer” Prayer to Jesus is answered by him already during his ministry, through signs that anticipate the power of his death and Resurrection: Jesus hears the prayer of faith, expressed in worked (the leper, Jairus, the Canaanite woman, the good thief) or in silence (the bearers of the paralytic, the woman with a hemorrhage who touches his clothes, the tears and ointment of the sinful woman). The urgent request of the blind men, “Have mercy on us, Son of David” or “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” has been renewed in the traditional prayer to Jesus known as the Jesus Prayer; “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner!” Healing infirmities or forgiving sins, Jesus always responds to a prayer offered in faith: “your faith has made you well; go in peace.” (Mary Jane Tannen 13th of the Month Club) IN A TROUBLED PREGNANCY CALL BIRTHRIGHT @ 973-743-2061 SAVE THE DATE for MEND!!! Electronic Parish Giving is easy and convenient with no additional cost to you as you support your parish. It can be accessed through our parish web site (www.olschurch.com). You may still receive envelopes in the mail and if you wish you could turn them into the collection on Sunday and simply write "Parish Giving" on them. Please consider enrolling today as a way to enhance your personal stewardship to our parish.
