Dear Brothers,
We have all enjoyed a Blessed Christmas season and on our way to a banner year with
Council 8599.
We have a busy Lenten season starting this month and the Council is blessed to have so
many dedicated and talented members, that I am confident we will see great accomplishments this
Lent.
It is recognized by much of the St. Irenaeus congregation that the Knights were instrumental
in the Christmas season church displays and we should recognize some of the contributing Knights
leading to the manufacturing, setting up, teardown and storing of all of the displays. The
coordination of this large undertaking was accomplished by Brother Knight Louie Chavez and his
wonderful wife Teresa.
Helping out with labor were a number of Council Brothers including Leo G, Leo F, Henry N, Kevin
C, Frank F, Ken P, Bill S, Jose P, Lloyd D, Bob M, Bobby V and others, All is stored and under
repair for next year’s display.
We pray for rain, our fallen brothers and families and continued Spiritual guidance this
spring.
God Bless all of you,
Vivat Jesus!

Ice Cream is Good for the Soul
I’ve told this story before but it’s one of those that I would like to share
again. Matthew 18:4 –6 “whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom
of heaven. 5: Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me.6: But whoever
causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, It would be better for him if a millstone was
hung around his neck and he was drowned in the depth of the sea.” The Love that little children have
is unconditional. That’s the kind of love God has, and that is the kind of love God is calling us to
have…… Now the story. It was written by DJD.
A father took his family to a restaurant and before the meal the 6 year old prayed this prayer.
“Thank you God for the food, and I would like to have some ice cream to. Amen.” a women sitting
nearby commented to her husband, “that child doesn’t even know how to pray. Imagine asking God
for ice cream.” The little boy overheard her comment and it brought tears to his eyes. An elderly
gentleman who was leaving the restaurant stopped and whispered to him “To bad she never asks God
for ice cream, A little ice cream is good for the soul.” When the little boys ice cream sundae came
after dinner he picked it up and walked to the woman’s table, set the ice cream before her and with a
smile he said. “This is for you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes, and my soul is good
already.”
The little boy showed the kind of selfless humility that Jesus talked about in Matthew 18
Humble yourself as little children and you will be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Faith shines
greatest in a childlike heart.
Happy Valentine’s Day.

Brother Knights,
I hope that everything is going great. I’d like to start off saying that we have not been able
to find a place for our Annual Valentines Ladies Knight Out. The dinner/show house has been
closed for a while and there are no signs of it opening. Don Gargiulo PGK, the chairman of the
event, has looked in earnest for a new place but hasn’t had any luck. So looks like next year.
Now for February. First, on the 11th is our monthly business meeting, plan on attending and
get the update on the coming activities. We will be having sign-ups during the meeting also. Then on
the 17th we will be holding our annual “Fat Tuesday” breakfast for the St. Irenaeus School students
and faculty. Be sure to sign up for the pancake breakfast. Wednesday the 18th is Ash Wednesday and
the following six Fridays we will be staffing the kitchen and holding our Lenten Fish Fries. The first
being on Friday the 20th, that Friday being co-sponsored by the members of H.O.P.E. Tickets will be
on sale from the members the first of the month. Be sure to sign up for the cooking and serving crew.
Again remember to sign up for these events. The more we have helping, the quicker it gets done.
Bless you all

Dear Brother Knights,
Thank you to all the members who have paid their annual dues. If, by the end of January,
you haven’t gotten your payments to me, I will send out Second Notices. If you are having difficulty

number is in the front of this bulletin, or you can email me with your information. If your payments
have not been received by March 1, 2013, you will not be able to participate in any Knights of
Columbus functions until payment has been made.
Thank you, also, to those of you who returned your fraternal survey forms.
I just want to remind everyone that we have several events planned for this year and we need
all of you to help out when you can.
I hope to see all of you at the monthly business meetings.

WIN A VACATION WEEK ON THE BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII ………. like Brother Rolly
Arenz did last year…. Ask him about his wonderful vacation.
This year as part of our major fundraiser, The Michael Doss Memorial Charity Golf Tournament,
to be held on April 20th at Coyote Hills Golf Course, we will be pulling the winning ticket for a
fabulous week at the Wyndham Kona Hawaiian Resort, located on the scenic Kona Coast on the
Big Island of Hawaii, with check-in date on July 3rd, 2015, and departure on July 10th.
Our Council sponsors such groups as Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Special Olympics,
American Wheelchair Mission, Intellectually Disabled, HOPE, His Nesting Place, and La
Habra Life Center.
When thinking of tropical paradise, Hawaii is the first place that comes to mind, offering
incredible natural wonders found nowhere else on earth. See the 226 miles of coastline of white
coral, black lava and green olivine beaches. The seaside town of Kailua- Kona offers sport fishing,
water sports and every imaginable guided tour to make this paradise a vacationer's dream.
These great accommodations feature a 2-bedroom unit that can sleep up to 6, and
includes a kitchen, air conditioning, and a Lanai, plus all the expected amenities at a Wyndham
Resort.
Some of the natural wonders to see include Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, 442’ Akaka
Falls, Lush Rainforests.
Many tours are available, including Eco Tours, Helicopter tours, tour of 16,000 ft2 Hamakua
Mushroom facility, Mauna Kea Summit Tour, and BBQ Dinner at Kahua Ranch.
We will be mailing a book containing 6 tickets to each of our brothers. Price is only $10
per ticket, or 6 for $50. For this fundraising project to be a success, we are really counting on every
brother’s help to buy and/or sell at least 1 ticket book. More tickets being available from brothers
Lloyd Duronslet (714-812-1126) or Bill Serb (714-826-6029) or at our February, March and April
Business Meetings.
For those who are no longer able to travel, don’t deprive your family and friends of this
opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquility of Hawaii. Sell them the winning tickets.
Fraternally,
Mike Mercer
Golf Tournament Chairman
With only four months left in this Columbian year, I hope you have been thinking this past year
about becoming a council officer. Your council needs you, and for some of us, we would like to
step aside and let some of you younger Brothers take the helm and lead your council. I myself have been
involved with our order in some way as an officer or a Supreme coordinator, and I think for myself that it
is time for someone else to step forward. I loved being a Knight and I have seen many changes in our
order, but some of you younger Brothers need to take the lead. Think about it and let us know. For the
month of January, we selected as Knight of The Month, Brother James Bowler. Brother James has been a
busy Brother in many of our council programs and really help made our fish fries a big success and has
done his share of flipping pancakes. James is also a Eucharist Minister and is a funeral server. Thank you
James for all you do.
The council Family of the Month was selected for the many activities and things him and his
wife were and still are involved in. Brother Louie Chavez and his wife Theresa were selected and I can't
tell you everything that they have accomplished. They are both Hope members and put the
Presentation Sisters program together for many years. Brother Louie is a Eucharist Minister who takes
communion to the home bound, and provided transportation to the home bound for doctor’s
appointments. Louie and Theresa were very involved in setting up our parishes Christmas Nativity
Scene, Louie is like Joseph, a carpenter who has made many things for our parish, thank you Louie and
Theresa.
One of our duties as Brother Knights is too ask every man in our parish to become a member of
our order. If you don't ask he will never join, he will probably tell you he does not have the time, but you
have to be persistent and keep asking. You know that our council only meets once a month and it's not
like you are asking him for all his time. I know they have families, but once a month is not too much to
ask for, and we would love to see him get involved in one council activities. The next 1st Degree will be
held Monday, February 16th at Fr. Kass Council in Buena Park candidates check-in at 7:00 PM. Now
there is other councils that have 1st Degrees but I do not have the current Degree Schedule. The next 2nd
Degree will be held in Buena Park at Fr. Kass Council on Sunday March 22nd check-in time is 1:00 PM.
A 3rd Degree will be held on Sunday February 15th at St. Puis V parish hall, if you plan on taking your
3rd Degree you have to let me know so I can summit your name. The fee for the 3rd is $20 and check-in
time is 1:00 PM. For the members that are 4th Degree, we now meet in Fullerton at St. Julianna's Parish.
Have you recruited anyone lately?

FISH AND FELLOWSHIP
The Church calls us to abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent. We knights have a Fish
Fry each Friday during Lent to help. Children and non-fish lovers can get cheese pizza instead of
fish. All profits go to charities.
Did you know that in the early Church a fish was the symbol used by Christians to depict
Jesus? His scandalous crucifixion and death was hard for them to accept and understand. Remember
all the symbols of fish? Jesus took His disciples from being fishermen to being fishers of men. Jesus
multiplied the loaves and fish to feed the crowd after they had dined on His words. After the
Resurrection He cooked and ate fish on the seashore to show the reality of His life after death.
Please come and share fish and fellowship with us during Lent!
Yours in Christ,
Frank Faecke, Recorder
